GENERAL MEETING MINUTES (con’t)

Special Presentations:

Home Horizons, Doris Sensenburger

Doris explained the purpose of Home Horizons whose focus is to provide transitional housing for up to a year to women in need, most often single moms. The agency also provides counseling and various life skills as support. Doris provided some very heart wrenching stories and the difficulties that women face regarding spousal abuse, job support, daycare issues etc. She also thanked the club for the Christmas gifts given to the family.

Zone Team, Barb McArthur & Lisa Burechails

Barb, as the Zone Membership director noted that Zone C membership levels have remained consistent this year and Dis‐ trict membership has actually increased. Barb encouraged all members to participate in the awards process as a way of learning more about Kin and reaching new personal potential. Barb noted there is lots of good information on the Kin National web‐site and that there have been some changes to the National awards so best to check out the new criteria. Barb reminded all that the Diane Rogers Pride award is open to all members and it is a great learning experience whether you are a new or a veteran Kin member.

Lisa, as Zone CF/Service director advised there are new CF donation boxes available and that the old ones should be re‐ placed. The new District project this year is “One Dime at a Time” – gather 100 dimes to complete the page. Lisa also reminded members when doing project reports to keep track of the hours as well as the $ raised as National uses this in‐ formation in their media releases.

Beaver Valley Kinettes, President Kathy Uram The club has started to do some catering – a wedding, Christmas party etc. They also have MacMillian projects, bake sales, chocolate sales and a shopping trip to Grove City Pennsylvania in April 2011. BULLETIN EDITOR REMARKS …. BE Kim

Looks like Mother Nature is at it again with yet more snow.. Happy Day. Gee that sounded sarcastic.. Lemme try this again.

I’m so happy that spring is just around the corner I really can’t wait for all of this white fluffy snow to vanish. I hope the slush is gone quickly.

That was a bit better..now onto something not so mundane as the weather… it’s time we ladies kick it into high gear. We’ve plenty to do and only a few of us to do it’s time to remember team work works best and (to quote the PoH guy) if we all get in the boat and row together we’ll get where we wanna go faster and happier since we’re all in it together.

I know most of this is kinda random but I really don’t have too much to put in this box this month so take some advice and “If you can’t be with the one you love then love the one you’re with” or in the words of my 3 year old “ Come on Mommy, wiggle your bum like this, it’s fun!!”

Yours Truly,

Kim

Your mission… Think of and write down 5 businesses you have a connection to that you will ask for a donation for our golf tournament. Bring this list to the February General Meeting

I have easily red 20 plus books over the past three months; everything from non-fiction outdoor adventure stories (Yosemite climbers) to the fictional escape of espionage and crime scene investigation to light and wonderful storytelling of fictional lives.

What is it about a book that can be so much more rewarding than watching a movie or two? Both put me to sleep if I’m really tiredJ. A movie is someone else’s interpretation of the visual side of the story – reading a book I can put my own spin on that.

Which leads to a great debate – are libraries still a part of our future? They had better be … reading is one of the best learning tools to investi- gate our world, develop spelling skills, expand the vocabulary and to challenge our minds with information – the who, why, how, what and when of historical events and our future challenges. But a library is much, much more. It is the heart of a community and an instigator of curiosity and creativity.

While reading has all of these amazing benefits, writing or the arts are ways of expressing or de-stressing as well. Through the balance our Li- brary Board has achieved in promoting and partnering with art and culture through visual arts and the written word in combination with the pure library function of our Collingwood Public Library, I believe the results are profound. Their leadership is recognized nationally in the delivery of one of the best quality library organizations.

One of the community partners the Library works with is Wordstock. If the agenda permits at some time in the near future, I anticipte the club will have the opportunity to learn more about this special event founded on the written word in an extremely successful formula to provide something for all ages.

Hope you are all still enjoying a book here and there amidst your busy lives J. Of course, at the very minimum we always have our awesome bulletin.

Yours in Kin,

LM Kathy J.

Creamy broccoli lentil soup

This is low in fat. You can create a creamy effect from blending your soups on high in blender or in pot with a wand/hand blender. Broccoli is one of the highest protein veggies and lentils are second only to soybeans for maximum protein. Protein helps to balance your blood sugar, a very important thing for weight balance.

Directions 1. Heat the olive oil in a large soup pot over medium heat. 2. Add onions and garlic and sauté for 3 minutes. 3. Add the carrots, celery and basil and cook for a few more minutes until the spices coat them nicely. 4. Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil. 5. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour covered, covered. 6. Using a blender, puree till smooth. Garnish with green onions if desired. Makes three 2 cup (500 mL) servings. Lollipop Cookie Valentines

"Original Recipe Yield 1 dozen

Ingredients

12 craft sticks

1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup butter, softened

1/3 cup packed light brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 egg

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

12 (1 ounce) squares white chocolate

1 egg white

1 1/4 cups confectioners' sugar

3 drops red food coloring

Directions

Soak craft sticks for one hour in a bowl of cold water.

In small heavy saucepan over very low heat, stir chocolate chips until melted and smooth. Remove from heat; let cool.

In large bowl with electric mixer at medium speed, beat butter, brown sugar and vanilla until fluffy. Beat egg in well; beat in cooled chocolate. With mixer at low speed, beat in flour, cocoa powder and salt until smooth. Divide dough in half.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and grease 2 large cookie sheets.

Roll each half out to 1/8 inch thickness between 2 sheets of wax paper; freeze, in wax paper, 5 minutes. Peal top sheets of wax paper off dough; cut dough out using 3-inch heart-shaped cutter. Reroll scraps; freeze again 5 minutes; cut out. Place half of the hearts 1 inch apart on prepared cookie sheet.

Drain sticks, pat dry. Place one stick on each heart to make 2 1/2 inch handle, pressing lightly into dough. Place remaining hearts on top; press edges gently to seal. Bake about 12 minutes until firm to touch. Cool on wire racks.

In 2-quart heavy saucepan over very low heat, or in top of double boiler set over barely simmering water, stir white or milk chocolate until melted and smooth; if using both chocolates, melt in separate 1-quart pans. Remove from heat.

Holding each lollipop by handle, dip into chocolate to coat on both sides; let excess chocolate drip back into pan. Place each lollipop as it is coated on wax-paper-lined cookie sheet; refrigerate 20 minutes until chocolate is set.

To Make Icing: In large bowl with electric mixer at high speed, beat egg white and confectioners' sugar until very smooth. If desired, remove small portion of icing to separate bowl; tint with drops of food coloring. Spoon icing into decorating bag fitted with small writ- ing tip; pipe over lollipops in desired patterns. Decorate with assorted candies and decors; attaching with dots of icing.

Humour… Brenda B

Sometime this year, we taxpayers will receive an ' HST Compensation'' payment. This is indeed a very exciting program, and I'll explain it by using a Q & A format:

Q. What is an 'HST Compensation' payment? A. It is money that the provincial government will send to taxpayers.

Q. Where will the government get this money? A. From taxpayers.

Q. So the government is giving me back my own money? A. Only a smidgen of it.

Q. What is the purpose of this payment? A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the econ- omy.

Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China ? A. Shut up.

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the economy by spending your compensation cheque wisely: * If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China or Sri Lanka ... * If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to the Arabs. * If you purchase a computer, it will go to India, Taiwan or China . * If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala .. * If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea .. * If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan . * If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock, it will go to management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.

Instead, keep the money in Canada by: 1) Spending it at yard sales, or 2) Going to hockey games, or 3) Spending it on a hooker, or 4) Beer or 5) Tattoos. (These are the only Canadian businesses still operating in Canada . )

Conclusion: Go to a hockey game with a tattooed hooker you met at a yard sale and drink beer all day !

No need to thank me, I'm just glad I could be of help

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wiarton Willie is a famous albino Canadian groundhog who lives in the community of Wiarton in Bruce County, Ontario. Every February 2, on , Willie takes part in the local Wiarton Willie Festival. His role is to predict whether there will be an early spring. Although the original Wiarton Willie died in 1999, the Wiarton groundhog day celebrations continue each year with successors of the original Willie, each referred to as "Wee Willie." Groundhog Day, featuring Wiarton Willie, is a popular annual festival in Wiarton and is similar to events in other loca- tions in North America. A midwinter celebration involving an ani- mal with predictive powers was an element of Celtic culture.[ The link between weather prediction and the day is said to have been inspired by an old Scottish couplet: "If Candlemas Day is bright and clear/ There'll be two winters in the year."

Wiarton Willie Statue in Wiarton, Ontario

The story of Wiarton Willie dates back to 1956. A Wiarton resident named Mac McKenzie wanted to showcase his childhood home to his many friends, so he sent out invitations for a "Groundhog Day" gathering. One of these invitations fell into the hands of a Toronto Star reporter. The reporter travelled to Wiarton looking for the Groundhog Day event. None of the townspeople knew about a festival, but one suggested he check at the Arlington Hotel, the local watering hole. There the reporter found McKenzie and his friends partying and was invited to join them. The next day, the reporter lamented to McKenzie that he needed some kind of story to take back to justify his expenses. So McKenzie grabbed his wife's fur hat, which had a large button on the front, went out to the parking lot, dug a bur- row in the snow and pronounced a prognostication (which no one remembers). The picture of Mac and the hat ran in the February 3, 1956 edition of the Toronto Star. A year later, about 50 people arrived for the festival. Half were reporters from various media, including the CBC and Canadian Press. Seizing on the opportunity, McKenzie invented a festival that has been added to over the years.

Wiarton Willie himself is a more recent addition to the festivities. In the early years, prognostication was provided by the "mythical" trio of Grundoon, Muldoon and Sand Dune. Willie ap- peared on the scene in the 1980s. Wiarton Willie's predictive powers are attributed (by his followers) to his situation on the 45th parallel, exactly halfway between the Equator and the North Pole. He is claimed locally to be accurate in his prognostications around 90 per cent of the time, although scientific studies show groundhog predictions to have a success rate of more like 37 per cent.

Readers Interest… Janet C cont..

Death and ensuing scandal The original Wiarton Willie lived to the advanced age of 22, and was found dead only two days be- fore Groundhog Day in 1999. The organizers were unable to find a replacement, and instead marked Groundhog Day by revealing "Willie" in a coffin. He had been dressed in a tuxedo, had coins over his eyes, and a carrot between his paws. A scandal ensued when it became known that the real Willie had in fact decomposed, and the body in the coffin was that of an older, stuffed groundhog. The As- sociated Press was obliged to issue a retraction on its wires. Wee Willie The new Wiarton Willie is also known as "Wee Willie," and is another albino groundhog. There have actually been two Wee Willies—Wee Willie and Wee Willie 2. The former was reported as deceased on July 11, 2006 after fighting an infection for the previous month. The Groundhog Day show Groundhog Day in Wiarton is a major celebration, with dances, parades, ice hockey tournaments, curling bonspiels, pancake breakfasts, darts and snooker tournaments, sleigh rides, a Monte Carlo Night and a fish fry. Around 10,000 people are said to attend. It has been called "one the most popu- lar events in Ontario" and has twice been named "the World's Greatest Event" by Seattle's Festi- vals.com. Other Groundhog Day stars Other towns throughout North America are known to have winter-predicting groundhogs. The most famous is of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania (which appeared in the movie Ground- hog Day). There is also "Brandon Bob" of Brandon, Manitoba, "" in New York, "" in Alberta, "" in Lilburn, Georgia, "" in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, Two Rivers Tunnel in Cape Breton and "Gary the Groundhog" in Klein- burg, Ontario, among many others.

District One CF Trip to St. Lucia, January 16-23rd 2011

WOW is all I can say to describe the beauty of this place. Our first sighting of St. Lucia was a view of the Piton Mountains from the sky, and what a sight to behold. It took our breath away.

I want to start by thanking the District One CF Team of Brenda Dineen and Richard “Tiny” Bowman for choos- ing St. Lucia as our destination for the CF Fundraiser trip this year. I’ve never taken advantage of any of the previous trips, but with offers from LMOB to sleep with her in a Caribbean country, who wouldn’t go?

16 of us took the trip with $50 from each of our bookings being donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. A nice little cheque for $800 is just the icing on the cake after such a wonderful time away.

St. Lucia really is a country that must be experienced. One of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, it is located midway down the Eastern Caribbean chain, between Martinique and St. Vincent, and north of Barba- dos. We saw many of these islands from the sky on the way down and the colours of the waters surrounding these islands was simply beautiful.

St. Lucia is only 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, with a shape that is said to resemble either a mango or an avocado (depending on your taste). The Atlantic Ocean kisses its eastern shore, while the beaches of the west coast owe their beauty to the calm Caribbean Sea. Here’s an excel- lent site if you wish to know more about St. Lucia http://southerncaribbeancruises.biz/st-lucia

The International airport is located on the southernmost tip of St. Lucia, and of course, our resort, Smugglers Cove, on the northernmost tip .. go figure. Since St. Lucia is a volcanic island, trust me, there are no straight flat roads; every inch of roadway is like being on a giant roller coaster. And I’m not one to like rides .. especially when they drive on the wrong side of the road, with no speed limits and very little warning on the blind curves that you’re entering a single lane situation where the one lane is laying at the bottom of a 300’ drop (all results of the hurri- cane that devastated St. Lucia last November). Because of the road system, our trip to and from the resort took just shy of 2 hrs (yes, to go 27 not as the crow flies miles). We began on the east side of the island til about 2/3rds up, then crossed across the rainforest to the west side of the island to finish the route. Ahhhhhh .. what a trip!

Along the route we saw some incredible sights, breathtaking views and how the country is quickly recovering and repairing from the hurricane. Banana plantations are quickly regrowing; did you know that 95% of St. Lucia’s banana crop is shipped to Britain? Roadways are being rebuilt; did you know that there are still frequent mudslides that block roads on the western side of the island, but are quickly dealt with so that roads can be reopened? Repairing of the rainforest is underway; did you know that because of mudslides, many thoroughfares through the rainforest have been destroyed and they need to rebuild those routes. This is a resilient little country.

Then .. we were at the resort. I’m not going into detail about the entire week, it would take me forever to tell you all we saw, all we did and all that happened .. WAIT .. I just remembered “WHAT GOES ON IN ST. LUCIA, STAYS IN ST. LUCIA” .. so I guess that’s all I REALLY can tell you. I will add some pictures though, with explanation, so that you know what you’re looking at.

Suffice it to say, I highly recommend you make your way to this beautiful, lush country where the sights are breathtaking, the people warm and friendly and the warm of the sun will soothe your soul.
