She had been trying to convince people that Jin was not an international criminal committing war crimes against several nations but many people chose to ignore her defensive case. Desperate and running out of leads, Xiaoyu turned to Heihachi Mishima, who had restored the Mishima Zaibatsu back to its original state. Xiaoyu couldn't tell Heihachi that she was looking for Jin but she was willing to help Heihachi any way she could. Doing so, Heihachi paired Xiaoyu with Chai Xianghua, a Chinese soldier who was sent on assignment to cover up an incident, and Christie Monteiro, who was not only looking for Eddy Gordo but also secretly working with Lei Wulong as a private investigator. While it seemed as though Xiaoyu was eager to work for Heihachi and was willing to do whatever he commanded, Xianghua and Christie were not as eager as her, which raised suspicion within Xiaoyu and started to question her partners' motives. -

WHERE’S THE RODA?: UNDERSTANDING CAPOEIRA CULTURE IN AN AMERICAN CONTEXT Ashley Humphrey A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC December 2018 Committee: Kara Attrep, Advisor Megan Rancier © 2014 Ashley Humphrey All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Kara Attrep, Advisor The Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira has become an increasingly popular sport in the United States. Capoeira performances consist of a back-and-forth exchange of movements between two players in conjunction with a musical ensemble to accompany the physical display. Since the introduction of capoeira in the United States in the 1970s, capoeira has become the focus of various social institutions. The objective of this thesis is to acknowledge and problematize the impact American culture has made on capoeira aesthetics. The methods for this thesis included research in the fields of ethnomusicology, anthropology, post-colonial theory, and transatlantic studies. Fieldwork was conducted to acquire first hand accounts of capoeira practitioners from the Michigan Center for Capoeira. Lastly, an analysis of the portrayal of capoeira in the media examines how capoeira is showcased to audiences in the United States. Historical accounts, academic discourse, capoeira practitioners, and popular culture reveal how American culture has received capoeira. My research has shown that capoeira culture is represented and interpreted by various groups, such as scholars, American capoeira academies, and the media. These different interpretations have resulted in the displacement, fragmentation, or misrepresentation of capoeira history in the context of American culture. ' I conclude that dominant social structures have inherently changed how capoeira is discussed in academia, practiced in American academies, and portrayed in the media. -

Nua e Crua: Análise crítica da hipersexualização e a representação feminina nos jogos de luta Georgia da Cruz Pereira*1 Guilherme Pedrosa Carvalho de Araújo** Resumo Este estudo tem por objetivo analisar a representação feminina nos jogos de luta, em que é possível observar uma tendência à hipersexualização das personagens, em detrimento de outras características. Para tal, foi feito um estudo de caso, analisando os jogos Tekken, Street Fighter, Soul Calibur e Darkstalkers, selecionando três perso- nagens de cada jogo, de forma a analisar a relação da sua personalidade e contexto com a sua representação visual e figurino, bem como a utilização, ou não, da hiperse- xualização como forma de composição de personagem, recurso bastane utilizado e que acaba por dar continuidade à estereotipação das personagens femininas. TEKKEN 3 STORY One day, fifteen years after The King of Iron Fist Tournament 2, a communique was sent to Heihachi Mishima, the leader of the Mishima Financial Empire. The report brought the ominous news that his “Tekken Forces” had been obliterated after encountering a mysterious being called “Ogre”. Soon after receiving this news, martial arts masters from around the world began disappearing. In the midst of Heihachi’s concerns about the missing fighters and Ogre, a young man appeared before him. His name was Jin Kazama. He claimed to be the son of Kazuya Mishima, whom Heihachi himself had taken to the grave during the last Tournament. In a more startling revelation, Jin said that his mother, Jun Kazama, had been attacked by Ogre and vanished. All of these events convinced Heihachi that Ogre thrived on the powerful souls of the vanished masters. He also believed that harnessing Ogre’s powers could bring immense strength to the Mishima empire. And thus Heihachi taught the art of Mishima Style Fighting Karate to young Jin. Jin’s discipline and abilities were strengthened like steel under the intensive training driven by the desire for revenge upon the beast that took his mother’s life. Four years have passed, and Heihachi acknowledges Jin’s impressive fighting prowess. And now, he announces “The King of Iron Fist Tournament 3” – with Jin as a lure to draw Ogre out into the open.
