Bodegas Nidia D.O. Rueda BODEGAS NIDIA D.O. RUEDA Bodegas Nidia ABOUT D.O. RUEDA The Denomination of Origin Rueda was approved by the Ministry of Agriculture on January 12, 1980; it was the first Denomination of Origin to be approved in the Region of Castilla y León, after years of hard work in order to earn acknowledgement and protection for its autochthonous grape variety: the Verdejo. This D.O. falls within the influence of the river Duero and is situated on a high plateau of gentle hills. Made up of 72 districts located in the provinces of Valladolid, Segovia and Ávila. The D.O. Rueda stands 700 to 800 metres above sea-level, and consists of flat highlands, with very long, cold winters, short springs with late frosts, and dry, hot summers, only altered by untimely storms. The area has alluvial and flood terraces on the banks of the river Duero. Drk grey-brown soils, rich in calcium and magnesium, stony but easy to farm, with good ventilation and draining, and limestone outcrops on the hilltops. Permeable and healthy, their texture varies from sandy-loamy to loamy. B O U T I Q U E W I N E S www.spanisboutiquewines.com - [email protected] Bodegas Nidia BODEGAS NIDIA Director Daniel Torío Export Manager Cecilia Puebla Marcas Nidia BODEGAS NIDIA is a newly established winery with a very young and innovative spirit. It is under the Appellation of Origin Rueda. Its managing team has an extensive experience in viticulture. The variety used is VERDEJO. Grapes are harvested from a small plot of 5 hectares that is 30 years old. Yield per hectare is around 6,500 kilos. This, together with continental climate of the central plateau and the rocky soil, makes the grapes reach 13° and an excellent quality. In the winery, it is followed a traditional winemaking process but with the latest technological advances. Fermentation is slow, it takes around 20 days, and temperature is between 14°C and 15°C, in order to maintain the fruitiness of this variety. Nidia is bright, clear... that means its name. The result is a wine of exceptional quality with floral aromas of hay and citrus fruit with hints of green apple. PETER DRY The realm of RuedaRueda UEDA is one of the five Denominación de Origen (DO) wine regions in Castilla y R León (usually known as Castile in English). The name of the region is derived from castillo, the Spanish word for castle. Certainly the largest con- centration of castles in Spain can still be found here. In the 10th and 11th centuries, this was a battleground between the Peter Dry Moors and the Christians, and towns were fortified for pro- tection. However, most of the surviving castles in this region Vineyards of the World were built as palatial residences after the ‘Reconquest’ when there was no military purpose. Addendum regarding: The 2021 Certified Specialist of Wine Study Guide, as published by the Society of Wine Educators This document outlines the substantive changes to the 2021 Study Guide as compared to the 2020 version of the CSW Study Guide. All page numbers reference the 2020 version. Note: Many of our regional wine maps have been updated. The new maps are available on SWE’s blog, Wine, Wit, and Wisdom, at the following address: http://winewitandwisdomswe.com/wine-spirits- maps/swe-wine-maps-2021/ Page 15: The third paragraph under the heading “TCA” has been updated to read as follows: TCA is highly persistent. If it saturates any part of a winery’s environment (barrels, cardboard boxes, or even the winery’s walls), it can even be transferred into wines that are sealed with screw caps or artificial corks. Thankfully, recent technological breakthroughs have shown promise, and some cork producers are predicting the eradication of cork taint in the next few years. In the meantime, while most industry experts agree that the incidence of cork taint has fallen in recent years, an exact figure has not been agreed upon. Current reports of cork taint vary widely, from a low of 1% to a high of 8% of the bottles produced each year. Page 16: the entry for Geranium fault was updated to read as follows: Geranium fault: An odor resembling crushed geranium leaves (which can be overwhelming); normally caused by the metabolism of sorbic acid (derived from potassium sorbate, a preservative) via lactic acid bacteria (as used for malolactic fermentation) Page 22: the entry under the heading “clone” was updated to read as follows: In commercial viticulture, virtually all grape varieties are reproduced via vegetative propagation.

A total of 65 commercial wines from different Spanish designation of origin (Alicante, Bullas, Campo de Borja, Jumilla, Castilla la Mancha, Ribeiro, Ribera de Duero, Rioja, Rueda, Utiel-Requena, Valdepeñas and Valencia) were characterized. The rare earth elements (REEs) content was determined by a high-temperature torch integrated sample introduction system (hTISIS) coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The REE content was used to draw characteristic PDOs radar charts. Results indicated that the REEs fingerprint provides a good prospect to discriminate the different Spanish PDOs, except for Alicante, Castilla la Mancha, Jumilla, Utiel-Requena and Valdepeñas. Finally, for those PDOs that were not properly distinguished, a second fingerprint obtained from Ba, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb and V content was used for discrimination purposes.

  • Antonio Sanz
ANTONIO SANZ VERDEJO 2013 ANTONIO SANZ || A pioneer and Rueda’s foremost innovator, Antonio Sanz is responsible for many of the ‘firsts’ of the region. He founded his winery in 1976, seven years before the Rueda DO was even established. Antonio is a man of tremendous foresight and his innovations have, and will continue to have, a dramatic impact on the entire DO. Widely used vineyard and winemaking practices, such as night harvesting, the introduction of Sauvignon Blanc, the vinification of young wines in stainless steel (vs. oxidative, sherry style that is traditional) and even sparkling wine from Rueda are among the ‘firsts’ of Antonio’s career. RUEDA || Rueda is a flat, but high altitude, meseta with wide horizons and gently rolling hills. Rueda’s climate is continental and windswept. Temperatures drop well below freezing in winter and there can be heavy frosts, fogs, wind and hail. In the summer there are long, hot days of unbroken sunshine. Despite being landlocked, this region produces some of the country’s most compelling white wines. VERDEJO 2013 || BLEND | 100% Verdejo VINEYARDS | Certified organic vineyards in Rueda at about 750 meters. Grapes are always harvested at night. WINEMAKING | Native yeast fermentation is followed by a short elevage period in stainless steel tanks. TASTING NOTES | Clean, bright and full of fruit, Antonio Sanz Verdejo is a focused and pure example of Rueda. Dominated by peach, pear, and apple flavors, the wine has intriguing notes of ginger and honeysuckle with a brisk, mineral finish. PRESS | 90 POINTS “Bright straw. Perfumed scents of honeysuckle, tangerine, pear and quinine, with a zesty mineral overtone.
