Collection Language(s) English Biographical/Administrative History Samuel Stritch was born in Nashville, Tennessee on August 17, 1887, the seventh of eight children of Garrett and Katherine (Malley) Stritch. He attended high school in Tennessee, where he graduated at the age of 14. He then attended St. Gregory's Minor Seminary in Cincinnati for two years, the American College m Rome for six years, and the Urban College of Propaganda in Rome where he received a doctorate in philosophy (1906 and theology (1910). He was ordained by Cardinal Pierre Respighi in Rome on May 21, 1910 at the age of twenty two. After ordination, Stritch was appointed as assistant pastor Assumption parish in Nashville. He also served as assistant pastor of St. Patrick's in Nashville before being named secretary to Bishop Thomas S. Byrne in 1916. He continued his service with the Diocese of Nashville when he was appointed Chancellor of the diocese in 1918, while also serving as superintendent of schools and rector of the Nashville Cathedral. On August 10, 1921 Stritch was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Toledo. During his episcopate in Toledo he was responsible for the building of twenty four churches and the opening of the first diocesan teachers college in the nation. Stritch was then appointed to the See of Milwaukee, being named Archbishop on August 26, 1930. His episcopate in Milwaukee lasted nine years and was marked by a continued effort to strengthen diocesan charitable work in light of the Depression. He was appointed to the See of Chicago on December 27, 1939, following the death of George Cardinal Mundelein. The early years of his Chicago episcopate were marked by a number of developments: the reorganization of the diocesan newspaper, The New World; the erection of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine; and the improvement of urban conditions through the Cardinal's Conservation Council. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals on February 18, 1946. As was the case with his predecessor in Chicago, Cardinal Mundelein, Stritch was also at the forefront of national activities. His participation as a member of the National Catholic Welfare Conference was perhaps his most notable role. He served as Chairman of the Administrative Board in 1940 and 1946, Vice Chair and Treasurer from 1943 1945, and ex officio member from 1956 1958. Besides serving as a member of the Administrative Board, he also served the NCWC as a member of the Catholic War Relief Services Committee (1940, 1942¬1946, 1956 1958) and the Russian Committee. He also helped organize the NCWC backed Polish War Relief Drive. Stritch was also involved with other national Catholic organizations that were included under the umbrella of the NCWC. These included the American Bishops Special Committee on the Pope's Peace Plan (Chair, 1941 1958); the American Board of Catholic Missions (Chair 1941 1958); the National Catholic Community Service organization (President, 1939 1944); the National Catholic Youth Conference; the Bishops Committee for the Montezuma Seminary (1945); the Bishops Committee for the Spanish Speaking (General Chairman of the Executive Board 1952 1958); the Catholic Committee for Refugees (1953); and the Bishops Committee for Migrant Workers (Chair 1957 1958). Besides the NCWC organizations, Stritch was also involved with the The Holy Father's Palestine Refugee Fund (1953 1954); the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (Board of Directors, 1945); the Catholic Near East Welfare Association; and the Catholic Church Extension Society (Chancellor 1939 1957) He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Catholic University of America Page 2 In 1958, at the request of Pope Pius XII, Stritch was appointed Pro¬Prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. He departed Chicago for Rome on April 27, 1958. During his voyage to Rome, he contracted an occlusion of the artery in his right arm and upon arrival in Rome the arm was amputated. During his recovery from the amputation he suffered a stroke and died on May 27, 1958. His body is interred at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
