  • Set and Costume Design by Kieron Devlin
Set and Costume Design by Kieron Devlin Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Set and costume design and properties for stage and film are fields that have attracted many talented people, a large percentage of whom have been gay men. In fact, this field in the entertainment industry has often been identified specifically as "queer work." While many heterosexuals have also been successful in the area of art direction, set design and decoration for stage and film have a distinctly gay cachet. Perhaps an even "gayer" field is that of costume design. As William Mann has recently documented, even during the worst periods of repression, Hollywood offered opportunities of creative expression for gay men and lesbians, many of whom were open about their sexual orientation. Opera and ballet also offered opportunities for gifted homosexuals. The trend here has been for painters to cross over from the fine arts to the applied arts, adding stage design to their range. For many notable stage designers working in this field, their sexual orientation was never an issue in their professional lives. Among the most significant gay and lesbian artists who are distinguished for their work as set designers are Charles Ricketts, Duncan Grant, Erté (Romain de Tirtoff), Pavel Tchelitchew, Oliver Messel, Cecil Beaton, Léonor Fini, George James Hopkins, Robert Colquhoun, Robert MacBryde, Franco Zeffirelli, David Hockney, Derek Jarman, and Keith Haring. Many gay artists of Hollywood's golden age were extremely versatile, but openly gay men became especially associated with costume design. In some cases, Hollywood costume designers were considered on a par with world class couturiers and fashion designers and had a palpable influence on public taste.

The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. If you are unable to locate a specific item in this inventory, please contact the reading room.

  • Dancing Dreams: Performing American Identities in Postwar Hollywood Musicals, 1944-1958
Dancing Dreams: Performing American Identities in Postwar Hollywood Musicals, 1944-1958 Pamella R. Lach A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History Chapel Hill 2007 Approved by: Peter G. Filene John F. Kasson Robert C. Allen Jerma Jackson William Ferris ©2007 Pamella R. Lach ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii Abstract Pamella R. Lach Dancing Dreams: Performing American Identities in Postwar Hollywood Musicals, 1944-1958 (Under the direction of Peter G. Filene) With the pressures of the dawning Cold War, postwar Americans struggled to find a balance between conformity and authentic individualism. Although musical motion pictures appeared conservative, seemingly touting traditional gender roles and championing American democratic values, song-and-dance numbers (spectacles) actually functioned as sites of release for filmmakers, actors, and moviegoers. Spectacles, which film censors and red- baiting politicians considered little more than harmless entertainment and indirect forms of expression, were the least regulated aspects of musicals. These scenes provided relatively safe spaces for actors to play with and defy, but also reify, social expectations. Spectacles were also sites of resistance for performers, who relied on their voices and bodies— sometimes at odds with each other—to reclaim power that was denied them either by social strictures or an oppressive studio system. Dancing Dreams is a series of case studies about the role of spectacle—literal dances but also spectacles of discourse, nostalgia, stardom, and race—in inspiring Americans to find forms of individual self-expression with the potential to challenge prevailing norms.

Geraghty, C. Paris, Hollywood and Kay Kendall. In Moseley., R. (Eds) Fashioning Film Stars : Dress, Culture, Identity., Chap 10, pages pp. 121-133. BFI (2005) http://eprints.gla.ac.uk/3370/ Glasgow ePrints Service http://eprints.gla.ac.uk PARIS, HOLLYWOOD AND KAY KENDALL Christine Geraghty, University of Glasgow The Constant Husband (GB, Gilliat, 1955) was in many ways a watershed film for the British star, Kay Kendall. Filming took place in the spring and early summer of 1954, when Genevieve (GB, Cornelius, 1953) and Doctor in the House (GB, Thomas,1954), hugely popular British comedies, had already brought her to the attention of the public and the critics. Although there had been problems before over suitable parts for her, it was the last film she made before the very public falling out with Rank Organisation in December 1954 when she was suspended from her contract for turning down a number of proffered parts, including the second Doctor film (Daily Herald, 22 December 1954). It was also the film on which she met and fell in love with her future husband, Rex Harrison, who was already a major star. But The Constant Husband is also significant from the point of view of image and fashion, the aspects of Kay Kendall's later career which are the subject of this essay. It was in this film that elements of Kendall's individual style most clearly seem to be shaping her costumes; it is perhaps not an accident that the costume designer Anna Duse was someone who knew Kendall in her childhood and had taught her dancing (Golden, p.15).
