The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is pleased to announce that another culinary megastar, Alice Waters, is the 2015 honoree at its annual fundraiser “From Garden to Table”, on Saturday, September 12. Previous honorees include Ina Garten, aka The Barefoot Contessa (2013), and Thomas Keller (2014). Promising to be the culinary event of the year, it will be a collaborative effort featuring an esteemed group of local chefs including Bill Fuller (big Burrito Restaurant Group), Trevett Hooper (Legume Bistro and Butterjoint), Sonja Finn (Dinette), Kate Romane (e2), Justin Severino (Cure) and Derek Stevens (Eleven). These talented chefs will prepare the dinner tribute to Ms. Waters, celebrating her tremendous contributions in making freshly sourced food supreme. The gala will take place on the grounds of the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden for the first time and will be centered around the newly opened Ada and George Davidson Event and Culinary Center which showcases a newly restored 1870s barn. Valeria Bril Universidad Nacional de Córdoba Hipertexto ivimos sin duda en una época de difícil discernimiento para los escritores que V parecen ponerse de moda por la vorágine de un mercado literario internacional que incorpora a autores que podríamos denominar como asesinos o suicidas literarios. Tal es el caso de Roberto Bolaño (1953-2003), un escritor chileno que vivió en México y se radicó en España. Bolaño supo encontrar el camino que lo llevaría finalmente al éxito editorial. Se convirtió en un asesino en masa o un asesino serial, o mejor dicho en un asesino pasional, para intentar corromper con su escritura las nulas y las duras consideraciones críticas que ignoraban su figura de escritor. Nada quedó fuera de su astuto entusiasmo como escritor para lograr ver la salida de su anonimato. Bolaño fue un problema para los medios crítico-literarios, porque se presentó con un perfil público controvertido y poco discreto para sus colegas, proponiendo sus propios enfoques y revalorizaciones de/sobre las obras de otros autores. El escritor chileno puede ser comparado, siguiendo sus palabras acerca de la escritura de los suicidas y de los asesinos, con: Un suicida, sea o no sea discreto, lo único que plantea son unas pocas (pero interesantes) preguntas, y en algunos casos hasta alguna respuesta. El problema es que muy poca gente sabe leer la escritura de los suicidas y en cambio mucha gente está convencida, entusiasmadamente convencida, de conocer la escritura de los asesinos”. -

Cooking by Ms. Shubitz After years of living in cities where I could easily go out to dinner or order take-out, I moved to a Harrisburg suburb in 2009. No longer could I rely on Whole Foods (There wasn’t one for 75+ miles!) for prepared dinners. Unless I wanted to order-in pizza every night, I knew I’d have to start cooking. It’s not like I didn’t know how to cook. I just hadn’t had the time to cook much when I was a classroom teacher. Therefore, in order to get learn how to cook, I had to watch other people do it. Good thing we had the Food Network on cable. I spent hours watching the Food Network the first year we lived in Pennsylvania. If I found a recipe on a show that looked good, I tried it out. Sometimes the recipes tasted as delicious as the TV hosts claimed they were and other times they were a flop. In addition to finding good recipes on the Food Network, I also learned cooking techniques from the on-air talent. For instance, Ina Garten (aka: the Barefoot Contessa) taught me how to make a chiffonade of basil! I learned how to grill by watching Bobby Flay use the barbeque. I’m always on the lookout for a new dish that will taste great. I have subscribed to magazines like Cooking Light and websites like America’s Test Kitchen. I regularly peruse Pinterest and cooking blogs, like Smitten Kitchen, for new recipe ideas. I’m always trying out something new and hoping that it will become worthy of my recipe binders! Along the way, I’ve had cooking accidents. -
