Alton Brown Biography
Press Contact: Lauren Sklar Phone: 646-336-3745; Email [email protected] Alton Brown Biography Although Alton Brown spent plenty of time in his mom’s kitchen growing up, his real interest in food sparked in college when he discovered that girls who said “no” to dates sometimes said “yes” if he offered to cook for them. His social life never ignited, but the food spark did and after spending a decade behind the camera in the TV industry, he headed to culinary school in hopes of one day creating a new kind of cooking show. Good Eats , the show that Brown would go on to wrote, produce, and host ran for 13 years on Food Network before making the move to Cooking Channel where it airs to this day. Combining food science, pop culture, skit humor, innovative cooking, and the occasional belching puppet, Good Eats has millions of fans and garnered a coveted Peabody Award for broadcast excellence in 2007. Brown has also served as the culinary commentator of Iron Chef America for 11 seasons, and hosted The Next Iron Chef for 5. Brown took home the James Beard Award for top food show host in 2011, which bookends nicely the one his first book nabbed in 2002. Speaking of books, he’s written 7 the last three of which made the New York Times Best Sellers List. In 2012 he joined the cast of Food Network Star as a mentor and yes...one of his team members won. He’ll be back on Star again in 2013. But wait, that’s not all. -

Take a Culinary Journey Unlike No Other. Watch a Star Rise
~Take a culinary journey unlike no other. Watch a star rise~ Let your taste buds be tantalized Meet Chef Brother Luck and his brand Four by Brother Luck & Lucky Dumpling With a name like Brother Luck it would be easy to attribute your success to good fortune, but Brother's is a result of hard work, determination, and passion. As a teenager, Brother fell on hard times when his father passed away at the age of 10. After relocating from the San Francisco Bay Area to Arizona, Brother enrolled in a vocational school for high school students to learn the culinary arts. The free food was intriguing enough to keep attending the cooking classes and eventually led him to find a passion in the kitchen that would set him up on an incredible journey inspired by a love for food and service. "I spent my whole senior year training," Brother admits. "I'd come to school in the morning and train. Then in the afternoon, I went to the Art Institute of Phoenix to train with a master chef. Then I'd work the line at the Hyatt all evening." Brother eventually was awarded with enough scholarships to attend the Art Institute of Phoenix, including one from the college, which named him “Best Teen Chef." His time in college would lead to a diverse career cooking in places around the world including in Japan; Hong Kong; Chicago; New York City and finally in Colorado Springs where he would start Brother Luck Street Eats. There he was honored as “Best Local Chef” by Colorado Springs Independent and “Most Cutting Edge Restaurant” by The Gazette Newspaper. -

Silverman and Purnell: Barefoot (Contessa) in the Kitchen Teaching Media Quarterly Volume 2, Edition 2 (Winter 2014): Teaching about Food and Media Barefoot (Contessa) in the Kitchen Overview and Rationale It is well known that popular culture represents and perpetuates the gender inequities that exist in our culture. Food media are no exception (Swenson, 2013). In fact, food media use gendered cultural norms to sell audiences their products (the shows, the cookbooks, the advertisements during the shows, etc.). In other words, food media commodify gender by selling audiences what they already understand to be true about gender as a way to increase profit (Forbes, 2013). Food media, and food television in particular, offer sites to examine the cultural struggles of gender. Both food and gender are intensely personal, social, and culturally specific phenomena (Barthes, 2013/1961). Further, television shapes the way we understand culture (Fiske, 2010). According to Cramer (2011): As a manifestation of culture, food is one of the most potent media for conveying meanings related to identity, ethnicity, nationhood, gender, class, sexuality and religion – in short, all those aspects of social, political and relational life that convey who and what we are and what matters to us. -
