At the start of Take the Lead, give yourself a score out of ten for each skill — be honest with yourself. At the end of the project score yourself again — what has changed? How could you continue to develop your skills? Some suggestions for developing these skills can be found on page 8. Core skill My definition Start Examples of where I have End used this skill Communication /10 /10 Teamwork /10 /10 Problem-solving /10 /10 Self-management /10 /10 Self-belief /10 /10 Good organisation /10 /10 Team-player /10 /10 Being innovative /10 /10 6 Take the Lead Prompt Book The Old Vic The Old Vic Take the Lead Prompt Book 7 SELF-BELIEF SUGGESTIONS — Volunteer to Take the Lead on a project or activity — Define your values and what motivates you (there’s some help to do this on page 35) FOR DEVELOPING — Research inspiring people including artists, leaders, athletes and activists to find out more about their journey. Read books and websites, listen to TED Talks or podcasts — Volunteer or take action for a cause that you care about CORE SKILLS — Celebrate your successes, no matter how small they seem. Make a list of your strengths and put it somewhere you will see it regularly — Set yourself challenges and then reflect on what you learn by trying to complete the challenge and what you might do differently next time (whether or not you complete the challenge) COMMUNICATION — Challenge yourself to contribute to discussions and share your opinion, or speak to new people — Give someone your full attention, put your phone away, make eye contact and ask questions — Sit quietly, inside or outside, and notice how many different sounds you can hear — Practise listening with a different focus — on the facts of what the person speaking is saying to you or on the speaker’s emotions — Give a presentation about something you are passionate about TEAMWORK — Try taking on a different role in a team to the one you would usually, for example put yourself forward to lead, or support someone else to Take the Lead — When working with a new team invite everyone to share the behaviours that make them happy and those they find difficult, create a simple set of ‘do’s’ to help you work together better — Play a team game or try a team sport you’ve never played before; notice when the team works well and why — Identify your strengths and areas you’d like to improve and share these with your team — Invite feedback from people you respect and use it to help plan your development PROBLEM-SOLVING — Really understand a problem using the five whys. Describe the problem simply then ask ‘Why?’ and answer the question at least five times — Make a list of every possible solution to a particular problem then list the opposites — this will give you a new perspective — Find a friend and go for a walk with the goal of tackling a problem — working with others and moving both help improve our problem solving — When thinking or talking about a problem use positive language to inspire new ideas. A problem can be called a challenge and you can use phrases like ‘what if’ or ‘we could’ — Learn something new, a new skill, a new language, an instrument, anything that means you practice thinking in a new way SELF-MANAGEMENT — Use a diary to plan your time, not just record appointments and deadlines (and then stick to it). Make sure you plan time for fun as well as study or work — Use an app on your phone or computer to stop you being distracted by social media or games when you want to focus — Build in extra time, ‘contingency’, to tasks and travel so that you aren’t late — Set SMARTer objectives for things you’d like to achieve (more about these on page 30) — Have a big tidy up and organise your space — make it clean, tidy and welcoming 8 Take the Lead Prompt Book The Old Vic The Old Vic Take the Lead Prompt Book 9 WORKSHOPS CURTAIN UP WORKSHOPS LAUNCH EVENT SUMMARY Curtain Up launches Take the Lead for all participating students.
