Name: _________________________________ Foul Ball By Kelly Hashway Emmitt followed his father to row eleven, seats thirteen and fourteen. He was so busy taking in the sights at the baseball stadium that he wasn’t watching where he was going. He bumped right into his father’s back. “Sorry, Dad.” His father laughed. “No problem. Which seat do you want?” Emmitt looked at the number thirteen on the back of the seat. Thirteen was supposedly an unlucky number, and he was going to need some luck if he was going to catch a foul ball. “I’ll take fourteen.” He squeezed past his dad and sat in seat fourteen. As the players took the field, Emmitt snapped pictures for his scrapbook. He cheered through seven innings, did the wave, and even got a foam finger. The game was great. But it was missing one thing. A foul ball. Emmitt wanted nothing more than to catch a foul ball. He was hoping he might even get an autograph or two after the game, and what better thing to get autographed than a foul ball? Every time a batter popped a ball into the air, Emmitt sprang to his feet. And each time, he’d groan and sit back down. He’d seen foul balls go over his head and fall short of his row. He squeezed his foam finger when the next batter came to the plate. It was his favorite player - Harry “the Hammer” Watson. Taking a Good Approach at the Plate !We have all see hitters who we feel overachieve and underachieve their mechanics and physical abilities at the plate. We cannot, for the life of us, figure out why the kid who absolutely crushes the ball in the cage, has solid mechanics, and a quick bat hits 50 points lower than the kid who looks far less impressive in the cage, has slower hands, and has questionable mechanics. If this is the case, look no further than pitch selection and plate approach. !We often hear coaches reminding players to have a proper approach at the plate, but what exactly does that mean? A good approach at the plate means different things depending on the age level you are coaching. Basic Levels !At the most basic levels, a proper approach simply means getting a good pitch to hit in any count and not swinging at pitches far out of the strike zone. Pitchers may not be changing speeds very much, and certainly are not locating pitches very well below the age of 12. At this age level simply emphasize getting a good pitch to hit and protecting the the strike zone with two strikes. Advanced Levels !Once pitchers begin to chance speeds and locate pitches, the concept of taking a quality at bat changes quite a bit. The idea at this level is still to get a good pitch to hit, but the concept of a “good pitch” needs to be refined. The toughest thing to get across to your players is that not every fastball that is a strike is a good pitch to hit. -
The Rules of Scoring
THE RULES OF SCORING 2011 OFFICIAL BASEBALL RULES WITH CHANGES FROM LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL’S “WHAT’S THE SCORE” PUBLICATION INTRODUCTION These “Rules of Scoring” are for the use of those managers and coaches who want to score a Juvenile or Minor League game or wish to know how to correctly score a play or a time at bat during a Juvenile or Minor League game. These “Rules of Scoring” address the recording of individual and team actions, runs batted in, base hits and determining their value, stolen bases and caught stealing, sacrifices, put outs and assists, when to charge or not charge a fielder with an error, wild pitches and passed balls, bases on balls and strikeouts, earned runs, and the winning and losing pitcher. Unlike the Official Baseball Rules used by professional baseball and many amateur leagues, the Little League Playing Rules do not address The Rules of Scoring. However, the Little League Rules of Scoring are similar to the scoring rules used in professional baseball found in Rule 10 of the Official Baseball Rules. Consequently, Rule 10 of the Official Baseball Rules is used as the basis for these Rules of Scoring. However, there are differences (e.g., when to charge or not charge a fielder with an error, runs batted in, winning and losing pitcher). These differences are based on Little League Baseball’s “What’s the Score” booklet. Those additional rules and those modified rules from the “What’s the Score” booklet are in italics. The “What’s the Score” booklet assigns the Official Scorer certain duties under Little League Regulation VI concerning pitching limits which have not implemented by the IAB (see Juvenile League Rule 12.08.08). -

Gordon Hylton* The sight of a fan injured by a foul ball is an unfortunate but regular feature of professional baseball games. Similarly, lawsuits by injured fans against the operators of ballparks have been a regular feature of litigation involving the national pastime.' While the general legal rule that spectators are considered to have assumed the risk of injury from foul balls has been reiterated over and over, injured plaintiffs have continued to sue in hope of establishing liability on the part of the park owner.2 Although the number of such lawsuits that culminated in published judicial reports is quite large, it is somewhat surprising that the first cases to reach the appellate court level did not do so until the early 1910s, nearly a half century after the beginnings of commercialized baseball.' * Professor of Law, Marquette University. -

Base Stealing Philosophy Definition of Base Stealing: A runner(s) trying to take advantage of the defensive team thru good technique and speed going in a straight line to advance a base as the ball is thrown from the pitcher to the catcher. Confidence: The base stealer(s) must feel they have control of the game even though the pitcher is initially in control of the baseball. Comfort: The base stealer must be as comfortable when off the base preparing to steal as they are when just standing on the base. 1) Developing a Base Stealing Philosophy: A TEAM SYSTEM is not based on speed! • PASSION: Coaches must have a passion for the base stealing game to develop their distinct Base Stealing Philosophy that carries the team to more Championships. • DETAILS: Coaches must learn detailed aspects of base stealing. This will help each athlete to execute on that one pitch. Many times the next pitch is too late. • SYSTEM: Base Stealing systems are NOT built on speed but on ALL players being able to use different parts of the system in a game cohesively and affectively. • PRACTICE: Base Stealing must be a part of everyday practice just like defense, hitting, and pitching. Include pitchers in the actual base stealing drills even if some do not ever hit. This will help pitchers know more about how to handle base stealing teams and individual players who pose a threat on the base paths. 2) What is a Team System? • Each athlete is knowledgeable and comfortable at every base • Each athlete and the team are prepared to run in every situation • Each athlete has an understanding of when to continue the steal. -

Lessons You Can Learn by Watching a Game Good coaches no matter how old they are will watch a game and come away learning something. Even if they may be watching the game for enjoyment, there is always something they will see that could possibly help them in the future. A great teaching moment is to take your team to a game or watch a game on TV with them. Show your players during that game not only the good things that are happening but also the things that are done that may cost a run and eventually a game. Coaches can teach their players what to look for during the game like offensive and defensive weaknesses and tendencies. They can teach situations that come up during the game and can teach why something worked or why it didn’t work. Pictures are worth a thousand words. Even watching Major League Baseball games on TV will provide a lot of teachable moments. Lesson One: When Jason Wurth hit the winning walk off home run in the ninth inning during game four against the Cardinals, the Nationals went wild. Yes, it was a big game to win but it was not the Championship game. Watching them storm the field and jump up and down with excitement, made me shake my head. I have been on both sides of that scenario and that becomes bulletin board material. The Cardinals came back to win the next game and take the series. Side note: in case you have never heard that term, bulletin board material means that a player/team said or did something that could make the other team irritated at them to the point that it inspires that other team to do everything possible to beat the team. -

LEVEL 2.0 7573 HERE COMES THE STRIKEOUT BY LEONARD KESSLER In the spring the birds sing. The grass is green. Boys and girls run to play BASEBALL. Bobby plays baseball too. He can run the bases fast. He can slide. He can catch the ball. But he cannot hit the ball. He has never hit the ball. “Twenty times at bat and twenty strikeouts,” said Bobby. “I am in a bad slump.” “Next time try my good-luck bat,” said Willie. “Thank you,” said Bobby. “I hope it will help me get a hit.” “Boo, Bobby,” yelled the other team. “Easy out. Easy out. Here comes the strikeout.” “He can’t hit.” “Give him the fast ball.” Bobby stood at home plate and waited. The first pitch was a fast ball. “Strike one.” The next pitch was slow. Bobby swung hard, but he missed. “Strike two.” “Boo!” Strike him out!” “I will hit it this time,” said Bobby. He stepped out of the batter’s box. He tapped the lucky bat on the ground. He stepped back into the batter’s box. He waited for the pitch. It was fast ball right over the plate. Bobby swung. “STRIKE TRHEE! You are OUT!” The game was over. Bobby’s team had lost the game. “I did it again,” said Bobby. “Twenty –one time at bat. Twenty-one strikeouts. Take back your lucky bat, Willie. It was not lucky for me.” It was not a good day for Bobby. He had missed two fly balls. One dropped out of his glove.
