Resumen Ejecutivo Hong Kong dispone de un sistema ferroviario de los más modernos de mundo, con una longitud total superior a los 280 kilómetros de vía férrea. Se trata del segundo medio de transporte público más utilizado cada día por los habitantes del territorio, solo superado por el bus. La red ferroviaria hongkonesa registró en 2018 más de 2.000 millones de usuarios –más de un 33% más que en 2008-, así como una media de 5,9 millones de usuarios diarios. Es por ello que las autoridades consideran a la red ferroviaria como la columna vertebral del sistema de transporte público local, y que la expansión de la misma se lleve a cabo de manera estratégica y fuertemente planificada. La red ferroviaria de Hong Kong está en manos de la MTR Corporation Limited, una empresa cuyo principal accionista es el Gobierno de Hong Kong y que es responsable de financiar, construir y operar tanto las líneas férreas que circulan dentro del territorio como las que conectan con la red china de ferrocarriles. El sistema ferroviario interior está compuesto por 11 líneas de tren pesado y un servicio de tren ligero, y cuenta cerca de 230 kilómetros de ferrocarril y 159 estaciones. Se calcula que alrededor de 5,3 millones de usuarios utilizan la MTR de forma diaria. El sistema ferroviario hongkonés conecta con el de China Continental de tres formas: mediante la línea de metro pesado East Rail Line; mediante los servicios Intercity Through Trains; y mediante la recién inaugurada línea de alta velocidad Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link (XRL). El tramo de la XRL que circula por territorio hongkonés tiene 26 km de longitud y comenzó a ofrecer servicio comercial en septiembre de 2018, tras casi ocho años de construcción y un coste total estimado de 9.300 millones de euros. En 2018 Hong Kong importó vagones y materiales para la construcción de vías férreas por un valor total de 127,44 millones de euros, siendo China su principal proveedor. España ocupó en ese mismo periodo la decimotercera plaza, con 850.000 euros exportados y una cuota de mercado del 0,67%. El futuro de la red ferroviaria de Hong Kong está marcado por el Railway Development Study (RDS) de 2014, un estudio elaborado por el Gobierno que contempla siete proyectos nuevos cuya construcción se espera que esté finalizada para 2031. Se estima que las autoridades destinarán un total de 10.700 millones de euros a dichos proyectos. Una vez se hayan completado dichos proyectos, se estima que la longitud total de la red ferroviaria hongkonesa pase a tener más de 300 km en 2031. 4 Oficina Económica y Comercial del Consulado General de España en Hong Kong OD NOTA SECTORIAL SOBRE EL SECTOR FERROVIARIO EN HONG KONG 2019 2. Situación del sector ferroviario en Hong Kong 2.1. Tamaño y demanda del sector La red ferroviaria desempeña un papel fundamental en la cobertura de servicios de transporte en Hong Kong. El medio de transporte ferroviario representa alrededor del 44% del transporte público regional, y supuso el 55% de los viajes de pasajeros transfronterizos entre Hong Kong y China realizados en 2017. Como medio de transporte masivo y de alta velocidad, los ferrocarriles ofrecen una oportunidad rápida, segura y cómoda, reduciendo la presión en la red de carreteras, y evitando muchos de los problemas ambientales asociados con el tráfico vial. Con todo, las autoridades consideran que la red ferroviaria es la columna vertebral del sistema de transporte público de Hong Kong1. Según cálculos de la Oficina de Transportes de Hong Kong, más de 5,6 millones de personas utilizaron la red pública de ferrocarriles cada día en 2018. Dicha red está compuesta por las líneas que conforman el Mass Transit Railway (MTR), así como por las líneas que realizan servicios transfronterizos entre China Continental y Hong Kong. Sistema ferroviario interior 2.2.1. Mass Transit Railway (MTR) La red de ferrocarriles interior del territorio de Hong Kong se vertebra principalmente a través del Mass Transit Railway (MTR). Se trata de la principal red ferroviaria pública de Hong Kong y sirve a las áreas urbanizadas de la isla de Hong Kong, Kowloon y New Territories. Está constituida por 11 líneas de tren pesado y un servicio de tren ligero. El sistema cuenta cerca de 230 kilómetros de ferrocarril y 159 estaciones, incluidas 91 estaciones de ferrocarril pesado y 68 paradas de tren ligero. Se calcula que alrededor de 5,3 millones de usuarios utilizan el MTR de forma diaria. Si bien la primera línea pública de ferrocarril –la East Rail Line– comenzó a operar en 1910, Hong Kong no contó con una red ferroviaria moderna y de alta velocidad hasta finales de los años 70. Durante la década de los 60, las autoridades hongkonesas estudiaron cómo solucionar los crecientes problemas de tráfico y movilidad de la ciudad. Aprovechando la continua expansión 6 Oficina Económica y Comercial del Consulado General de España en Hong Kong OD NOTA SECTORIAL SOBRE EL SECTOR FERROVIARIO EN HONG KONG 2019 económica del territorio durante ese tiempo, y ante el rápido crecimiento de su población, el gobierno de Hong Kong trazó un plan de desarrollo ferroviario para la región a principios de los 70. Dicho plan se materializó con el inicio de los trabajos de construcción en 1975 de la primera de sus líneas electrificadas: la Kwun Tong Line, que comenzó a operar a finales de 1979. Desde entonces, la red ferroviaria hongkonesa ha sido ampliada en constantes ocasiones a partir de los diferentes Railway Development Studies (RDS) elaborados por el Gobierno en 1994, en 2000 y en 2014. Actualmente está en vigor el de 2014, y es el que determina el marco para el futuro desarrollo ferroviario del territorio. El RDS 2014 presenta siete nuevos proyectos para mejorar y ampliar la red pública de ferrocarriles, los cuales se espera que estén completados para 2031. La red de tren pesado del MTR está compuesto a día de hoy por las siguientes once líneas: - East Rail Line: fue el primer ferrocarril pesado en Hong Kong. Comenzó a funcionar en 1910, entonces conocido como Kowloon-Canton Railway para proporcionar servicios desde Kowloon a través de los Nuevos Territorios hasta el cruce fronterizo de Lo Wu hacia China continental.

    231 Chapter 13 Transport Hong Kong’s transport system is among the best in the world. It is modern, efficient and provides affordable, comfortable and safe travel on a wide choice of carriers. The Government provides an efficient transport infrastructure to meet the challenges of population growth and continuous development. It encourages the use of public transport by ensuring quality service. It also manages road use to reduce congestion and promote safety, and supports special measures to protect the environment in places used by public transport. Rail is the backbone of the public transport system. The MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL) was formed following the merger of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) and the Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR) in December 2007. The network was further integrated in September through the introduction of an integrated ticketing system for single journey tickets and replacement of the former MTR/KCR interchange ticket gates by a barrier-free interchange. Railway projects progressed smoothly in 2008. The Kowloon Southern Link, which will connect the East and West Rail Lines at the southern tip of Kowloon Peninsula, and the LOHAS Park Station, which will extend the Tseung Kwan O Line, will be completed as scheduled in 2009. Progress was also made in the development of road networks. The section of Route 8 between Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin was commissioned in March and the remaining section between Tsing Yi and Cheung Sha Wan will be completed in late 2009. The feasibility study report for the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge (HZMB) was submitted to the Central Government for approval in December.

    The Opening of Hong Kong for the Preaching of the Gospel Take the Peak Tram (or Bus 15 from Central MTR) to the Peak. It lets you out into the Peak Tower shopping center. Go up one level, and walk outside to the area between the Peak Tower and the Peak Galleria shopping centers where there is an old green trolley car on display. Turn right, cross the street to the old stone restaurant called “The Peak Lookout” and take the road that starts just on the right side of the restaurant. Walk about 200 yards until you see a small waterfall on the right side of the path (about a 10 minute walk). Stop there briefly and read the following history of the dedication of Hong Kong for the preaching of the gospel. In 1949, President George Albert Smith commissioned Apostle Matthew Cowley to bless the land of Hong Kong to the preaching of the gospel, even though all of China was dedicated in 1921 by David O. McKay, an apostle at the time. A new mission had been formed with Hilton Robertson as the mission president and Henry Aki as a counselor. Elder Cowley, President Robertson, Brother Aki, and their wives, along with Brother Aki’s mother, went to the peak for this event. In a moment, you can walk to the exact spot where the dedication occurred and read some journal entries about the event, but this is how the exact spot was discovered. W.     Peak Tram service to resume on 22 July 2019 [Hong Kong, 18 July 2019] Peak Tramways Company, Limited has announced that the Peak Tram service will be fully resumed on 22 July 2019, operating between 7am and midnight every day. The Peak Tram was first established in 1888 and is one of Hong Kong’s most popular tourist attractions, serving more than 6 million local and international visitors annually. “We would like to offer our sincerest gratitude to our visitors, partners and friends for their patience and support during the first phase of upgrade work, which we are pleased to announce that all works for the first phase of upgrade have been successfully completed. This is part of the major renovation and upgrade work which will be ongoing until 2021,” said May Tsang, General Manager of The Peak Complex. “We would also like to acknowledge the relevant Hong Kong government departments for their support, enabling us to complete the first phase of the project in a timely manner.” The first phase of the upgrade work included temporary improvements to parts of Tramway Path and the construction of new, temporary boarding and alighting platforms, located 70 metres uphill from the former platforms. Long-time ERA and BSRA member, Seashore Trolley Museum instructor, and 35 year WCBS Newsradio 880 meteorologist for Todd Glickman travels around the world working with companies that invest in research at MIT. This gives him the opportunity to ride transit systems around the world. In this show, we got to see his recent travels to Asia, featuring Taiwan, China, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, plus a few surprises from a recent trip to Europe. All through the show, he showed us numerous interior as well as exterior photos of both rail vehicles and stations, with some photos of signage and fare payment infrastructure, and some iPhone video clips. He started the show describing the parts of his life history that led to his introduction to Seashore Trolley Museum by way of meeting a fellow radio broadcaster there. The first images we got to see were a video from inside a Bangkok (Thailand) SkyTrain while in motion. They formerly ran in 3 car trains, but as demand has grown, they have started running in 4 car trains. Like several metro trains that we got to see later in the show, they are fully passable along the length of each train without requiring passengers to open doors between cars, such that from the passenger's point of view each train is one large articulated car. Nearly all of the SkyTrain cars are covered in ad wrap. SkyTrain (Bongkok Mass Transit System, BTS) is a private company, as is MRT (Metropolitan Rapid Transit), the company that runs the Bangkok Metro (subway), and they have separate fare collection, even at stations where their routes connect, although fare collection is planned to become integrated eventually.
