Martial arts From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia For other uses, see Martial arts (disambiguation). This article needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (November 2011) Martial arts are extensive systems of codified practices and traditions of combat, practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental and spiritual development. The term martial art has become heavily associated with the fighting arts of eastern Asia, but was originally used in regard to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. An English fencing manual of 1639 used the term in reference specifically to the "Science and Art" of swordplay. The term is ultimately derived from Latin, martial arts being the "Arts of Mars," the Roman god of war.[1] Some martial arts are considered 'traditional' and tied to an ethnic, cultural or religious background, while others are modern systems developed either by a founder or an association. The Knee Strike
Kinematics Analysis of Muay Thai Knee Techniques Rachnavy P. 1, Khaothin T. 1, Rittiwat W. 2 1 School of Sports Science, Suranaree University of Technology (Thailand) 2 School of Sports Science, Srinakharinthara Wiroj University (Thailand) Purpose: The Knee Strike (This technique is done by raising the knee diagonally to the thigh, rib and side of the body of an opponent.) and Knee Straight (This technique is done by raising the knee straightly to the body of an opponent.) techniques are commonly used in Muay Thai. It is effective for close quarters combat. This paper was to compare knee Strikes and knee straight velocity in Muay Thai. Methods: Five professional boxers performed five knee strikes and five knee straights technique to Muay Thai punching bag. Three-dimensional kinematics of knee Strikes and knee straight technique were recorded via a motion capturing system (Qualisys Systems, Sweden). Results: After data collection, velocities of knee technique were analyses. The t-test was used to compare the means between two techniques. In comparing the knee strike and knee straight techniques, there were significant differences in knee velocity (p < 0.05). The results indicated that the mean values of knee straight velocity (mean 15.15 ± 4.60 m/s) were higher than knee Strike velocity (mean 6.01 ± 1.47 m/s). Conclusions: This study found that velocity of knee straight is higher than velocity of knee strike. It is possible that knee straight technique generated more power than knee strike technique. This finding suggests that choosing the right techniques will help boxer to win a fight. -
Lara and Warrington Collide in Huge Rematch, Taylor Faces Han at Emerald Headingley Stadium on September 4
LARA AND WARRINGTON COLLIDE IN HUGE REMATCH, TAYLOR FACES HAN AT EMERALD HEADINGLEY STADIUM ON SEPTEMBER 4 Mauricio Lara and Josh Warrington will rematchin an epic showdownat Emerald Headingley Stadium on Saturday September 4, live worldwide on DAZN. The co-main event will also feature undisputed Lightweight World Champion Katie Taylor, who puts all her belts on the line against IBF Mandatory Challenger Jennifer Han. ‘The Leeds Warrior’ (30-1, 7 KOs) was floored and ruthlessly finished by Mexico’s Lara (22-2, 15 KOs) in a sensational knockout loss at The SSE Arena, Wembley in February that put a massive dent in the former IBF Featherweight World Champion’s unification plans. Warrington endured a stunning upset defeat as he was dropped and nearly stopped in the fourth round before ‘Bronco’ sent him crashing to the canvas again in the ninth to end the 30- year-old’s unbeaten record. The upset-of-the-year contender sent shockwaves through the 126lbs division and now Warrington will look to exact revenge in front of a capacity crowd at the home of the Leeds Rhinos in the biggest fight of his career. Undisputed Lightweight rulerTaylor (18-0, 6 KOs) defends her WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine crowns against her latest Mandatory ChallengerHan (18-3-1, 1 KOs) in the co-main event, another huge stage for the best in women’s boxing. The Irish star was forced to dig deep as she retained her World Titles via a unanimous decision victory after another memorable meeting with Natasha Jonas last time out at Manchester Arena in May – nine years on from their London 2012 Olympic Games bout. -

ICA Theme Profile If You're Lucky Enough to be Irish, You're Lucky Enough! St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Created by: Richard Mullins Working intensity: moderate to very hard Length: 50 minutes Concept Behind the Profile Ireland has a population of 5 million people, but 70 million people call it home. We are the friendly Irish and we are the fighting Irish! I’ve picked several key moments in Irish culture that got Ireland noticed across the world and tied them into working intervals of varying duration. The terrain of Ireland is constantly changing, so be prepared for terrain that could always shift under your feet! The scope of this profile is to work below threshold, then at threshold, and finally give riders the option to work above threshold. When you ask a tourist about Ireland or if you think about how Ireland is perceived outside of our small isle, we are, in many cases, associated with the colour green, Guinness, and anything else that fits a stereotype. All one has to do is look at any tourist T-shirt! Let’s think beyond these stereotypes; Ireland has thrown herself into the world arena many times over the last few years (and before that) in the areas of dance, film, music, economics, and politics. These pivotal moments have slowly changed how we are perceived in the world. As the ride begins, I do like to mention a few quotes that various film and TV characters around the world have referenced about Ireland to lighten the mood. I will include some at the very end of this profile. -

STATEMENT by H.E. Usen Suleimen, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan at the opening of OSCE Human Dimension Implementation Meeting Warsaw, 24 September 2012 Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, At the outset please allow me to express our sincere gratitude to the Government of Poland for a warm hospitality. We also thank the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the Chairmanship for the arrangement of this annual Human Dimension Implementation Meeting. We also recollect with appreciation the Irish Chairmanship’s arrangement of the 1st SHDM on tolerance and non-discrimination in society through Sport held in Vienna in April this year, which, definitely, has facilitated the Irish boxer Katie Taylor to be among first women in the history of the Olympic Games to win gold medal in London in August this year. This is quite in line with the other Kazakhstan’s priority - gender equality. Dear participants, For the last several years Kazakhstan, both before and after its successful Chairmanship, was one of the most visible states in the OSCE activities due to always high level of the official delegations and numerous Kazakh NGOs at every event. Even today we boast that Kazakhstan continues to show high participation level with 61 Kazakh civil society organizations present at the forum. The said activity of Kazakhstan is also reinforced by a constructive dialogue that we have with ODIHR on a number of issues related to enhancement of the democratic processes of my country. The ODIHR’s recommendations are taken into account. -
International Boxing Research Organization, Had Perhaps Its Stron- Gest Showing Ever at Canastota
boxing by don cogswell This year’s trip to Canas- tota, my third, for the Hall of Fame inductions weekend, continued to add texture and depth in experiencing one of boxing’s principal convergences. The dazzle of being immersed in so many of boxing’s notables does fade but the rewards of repeated visits with friends and associates deepen to center stage. Doing a little business also helps. The Random House Dictionary, unabridged, second edition, defines appetizer as “any small portion that stimulates a desire for more or that indicates more is to follow.” An opportunity to meet fifties contender Rocky Jones, courtesy of former Chester heavyweight Jack Mer- cadante and Philly historian Chuck Hasson, was up to scratch in meeting that definition. (I had flown into Philadelphia from the West Coast, planning on driving north with these two notables, to Canastota.) Rocky lives in a primarily African American neighborhood that was once predominately Italian American. The house Jack Mercadante grew up in is a stone’s throw from Rocky’s. Throughout our hour visit on his stoop, passerby’s continuously asked Rocky if everything was all right. I felt privileged with his repeated mantra that everything was just fine. (Jones lives a short drive from Leiperville, where we passed, in homage, the site of Baron Dougherty’s Colonial Hotel.) Among the many comments of Rock’s experiences, both in the ring and the gyms, the two bouts with Roland LaStarza loomed large. Rocky, essentially a lightheavy, fought heavyweights throughout his career. LaStarza was in line for a title shot, and a big favorite when he fought Jones, but was upset over 10. -
Biomechanical Assessment and Determinants of Punching in Boxers
0955658 Biomechanical assessment and determinants of punching in boxers Seth Lenetsky PhD A thesis submitted to Auckland University of Technology in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) 2018 School of Sport and Recreation I 0955658 Abstract Punching is a fundamental human movement that is the defining action of many combat sports, most of all boxing where it is the primary method of attack. This thesis investigated the biomechanics and determinants of punching to answer the question, “What defines effective punching in boxing?” The first chapter of the thesis expanded on these themes, as well as identifies current gaps in the literature relating to the analysis of punching in boxing. Chapter two was a narrative review of methods used to assess impact kinetics and the contributors to impact kinetics in combat sports. The third chapter was a narrative review on effective mass, an impact variable of interest in the literature. The chapter focused on defining the variable and the methods proposed to maximise effective mass. The review found that effective mass was the inertial contribution of a fighter to impact. Additionally, the review found that double peak muscle activation is currently the only process proposed in the literature to increase effective mass. There is a potential gap in the literature regarding continued force application by the lower body during impact. Chapter four, a qualitative study of experienced boxing coaches exploring their views on effective punching performance. The results of the study are in agreement with Chapter two in that the lower body’s contribution was key to producing an effective punch.
