Von Troschel. Spengel „Die Geruchsorgane und das Nervensystem der Mollusken, ein Beitrag zur Kenntniss der Einheit des Molluskentypus." Zeitschr. wissensch. Zoologie 35 p. 333 —383 mit Tafel 17—19. Verf. weist zuerst klar nach, dass die Klassen der Chiastoneura und Orthoneura v. Ihering's unhaltbar sind; ferner führt er das Nervensystem der Heteropoden auf das der Prosobranchier zurück und erklärt die Heteropoden für durch Anpassung an die pe- lagische Lebensweise modificirte Prosobranchier. Er ver- sucht auch eine Deutung der Theile des Nervensystems der Haliotiden, Fissurelleu, Patellen und Chitonen, um sie auch mit den Prosobranchieen in nahe Beziehung zu bringen. Als Geruchsorgan deutet er ein in der Nähe der Kiemen gelegenes Organ bei Haliotis, Fissurella und Patella und welches er aus den verschiedenen Gruppen der Mol- lusken untersucht und beschrieben hat. Er verwerthet auch das Nervensystem für die Systematik der Gastero- poden. Die bisherigen Prosobranchier, bei denen eine Drehung des Körpers, also auch des Visceralnervensystems eingetreten ist, nennt er Streptoneuren^ die übrigen Gasteropoden Euthyn euren. Leistungen in d. Naturgescliiclite Asygobranchia mit einer Kieme. Letztere zerfällt in Opi- sthobranchia, wofür der Ihering'sche Name Ichnopoda vorgezogen wird, Pulmonata und Pteropoda. Die Chi- tonen mit Chaetoderma und Neomenia bilden eine von den Gasteropoden getrennte Klasse Amphineura. — Bei den Lamellibranchiern erkennt Verf. das Geruchsorgan in zwei Organen, die an den sogenannten Pleuralganglien liegen. Deshalb erkennt er diese Ganglien nicht als Pleu- ralganglien an, sondern lässt das Nervensystem aus zwei Cerebralgangiien und zwei Pedal ganglien, nebst einer Vis- ceralcommissur, in welche zwei Visceralganglien einge- schaltet sind, deren jedes mit einem Ganglion olfactorium nebst epithelialem Geruchsorgan verbunden ist, entstehen. Interessante Arbeit, auf deren Einzelheiten näher einzugehen, an diesem Orte unthunlich ist. Spengel vertheidigt sich gegen einen Angriff von Ray Lankester. Zool. Anzeiger IV p. 435. Sochaczewer vertheidigt seine Ansicht, dass in der Fussdrüse der Schnecken ein Sinnesorgan zu sehen sei, gegen Simroth. Er hält sie vor wie nach dem Geruchs- organ zugehörig. Zeitschr. f. wiss. Zoologie 36 p. 541. Carriere bestätigte seine frühere Mittheilung, dass die im Fusse der Lamellibranchiaten vorkommenden Oeff- nungen nicht der Wasseraufuahme dienen, sondern Mün- dungen von Drüsen seien, welche entweder Byssus ab- sondern oder als rudimentäre Byssusorgane aufzufassen sind. Bei den Gasteropoden fand Verf., dass der Wasser- porus auf der Mittellinie der Fusses die Mündung einer Schleimdrüse ist, und ausserdem noch eine andere grosse Schleimdrüse in dem Vorderende des Fusses vorkommt. Da- nach scheint ihm weder bei den Lamellibranchiaten noch bei den Gasteropoden ein Wassergefässsystem zu existiren. Er nahm eine Anzahl Muscheln aus dem Wasser, Hess das zwischen den Schalen enthaltene Wasser ablaufen und legte sie auf feuchtes Fliesspapier und deckte sie mit einer Glasglocke zu. Er sah, wie die nur von Luft um- gebenen Thiere ihren Fuss ebensoweit hervorstreckten und anschwellen Hessen, wie die in Wasser befindlichen. Zool. Zool. Anzeiger IV p. 527. Graf B. H aller fand bei mehreren Gattungen von Schnecken, namentlich bei Patella, Haliotis, Trochus, Turbo, Fissurella, Commissuren zwischen den Pedalnerven wie bei Chiton, fasst sie aber bloss als ein Netzwerk auf. Dann hat er auch bei denselben Gattungen Geschmacksknospen im Mundepithel entdeckt. Endlich untersuchte er bei Pa- tella in der Mundhöhle ein Organ, dessen Sinnesepithel und Lagerung vernmthen lässt, dass es ein Organ eines sechsten Sinnes sei. Zool. Anzeiger IV p. 92. Barfurt h fand, dass der Kalk in den Leberfollikeln der Landschnecken als phosphorsaurer Kalk auftritt, und dass derselbe zur Reparatur der Schalenverletzungen ver- wendet wird, obgleich in der Schale nur kohlensaurer Kalk gefunden wird. Zool. Anzeiger IV p. 20. Rouzaud hat sich überzeugt, dass die Land-Schnecken nicht allein durch die Oberfläche des Fusses Wasser ein- saugen, sondern dass sie es auch durch den Mund verschluc- ken, wenn sie an Trockenheit leiden. Association frangaise pour Tavancement des sciences IX Reims p. 7L3. Krukenberg untersuchte die Hämolymphe von Planorbis, Limnaeus und Paludina. Die von Planorbis gerann bei 60^, die von Limnaeus stagnalis und Paludina vivipara bei 78« C. Verhandl. Vereins zu Heidelberg III. Bd. 1. Hft. Fraisse, „Ueber Molluskenaugen mit embryonalem Typus", hat die Augen von Patella, Haliotis und Fissurella untersucht. Er fand das Auge von Patella auf der aller- niedrigsten Stufe, wenn man es überhaupt als solches be- trachten könne. Er erklärt es, da der Nerv erst in späteren Entwickelungsstadien zu der Retina hinzutritt, dass dieses Organ ein phylogenetisch entstehendes Auge darstelle. Zeitschr, wiss. Zoologie 35 p. 461 mit Tafel 25 und 26. Dali erzählt von einer Schnecke aus der Gruppe von Helix albolabris, welche die Stimme eines Kindes gekannt und von anderen unterschieden haben soll. Amer. Naturgeschichte Kobelt hat ein ^Illustrirtes Conchylienbuch^ Nürn- berg 1878—1880 herausgegeben. Es ist ein Band in zwei Theilen von 392 Seiten mit 112 Tafeln. Weste rl und hat ^^kleine kritische Bemerkungen" über zehn Conchylien gemacht. Jahrbücher d. D. malak. Ges. VIII p. 1. Sie betreffen die Gattungen Helix, Plan- orbis, Limnaea, Clausilia, Pomatias, Valvata und Hya- linia. Von George W. Tryon's Manual of Conchology erschien im Jahr 1881 der dritte Band, welcher die Fami- lien Tritonidae, Fusidae, Buccinidae enthält. Der Text umfasst 230 Seiten, nebst einem Index von 50 Seiten, und 87 Tafel mit 628 Figuren Abbildungen. Diese letzteren sind recht hübsch, kenntlich ausgeführt, und werden den- jenigen, welche ihre Sammlung bestimmen wollen, eine wesentliche Erleichterung bieten. Sie ersetzen gewisser- massen und bis auf eine gewisse Grenze die ganze, so sehr zerstreute Litteratur. Es ist daher sehr zu wünschen, dass der Verf. nicht ermüdet, das angefangene mühsame Werk zum Ende zu führen. Paul Fischer hat begonnen ein „Manual de Con- chyliologie ou Histoire naturelle des MoUusques vivants et fossiles herauszugeben. Das Werk soll in 6 bis 7 Lieferungen vollendet sein. Die 3 ersten Lieferungen sind erschienen. Die zweite Lieferung beschäftigt sich mit der geographischen Verbreitung, mit der bathymetrischen Ver- breitung der marinen Mollusken, und beginnt mit den Landmollusken. Die dritte Lieferung handelt von der geographischen Verbreitung der Land- und Süsswasser- Mollusken. Von Küste r's Systematischem Conchylien-Cabinet, fortgesetzt von Kobelt und Weinkauff, erschienen im Jahr 1881 die Lieferungen 300 bis 314. Ihr Inhalt bezieht sich auf die Gattungen Cypraea, Ovula, Rissoina, Mactra und Crassatella bearbeitet von Weinkauff, Cancellaria, Eburna und Buccinum von Kobelt, Helix von Dohrnund Navicella von v. Heft des ersten Bandes seiner Conchologischen Mittheilungen eine Abbil- dung von Helicarion imperator Gould, und dann eine Reihe von Limnaeen, die unten am passenden Orte erwähnt werden sollen, ferner Tornatellina gigas Hart., Stenogyra Carolina Mart. und terebraster Lam., Partula rufa Less., Helix (Aegista) Gerlachi Möllend., Helix eonella A. Ad. und trichotropis Pfr. In dem 1. und 2. Heft des zweiten Bandes, worin übrigens die Paginirung und die Nuramirirung der Tafeln fortläuft, werden theiis neue, theils noch nicht abgebildete Arten abgehandelt, und zwar aus den Gattungen Subemar- ginula, Umbrella, Pleurotoma, Nassa, Euthria, Marginella, Columbella. Den Beschluss machen Radula- Untersuchungen von Schacko. Abgebildet sind auf Tafel 24 die Radula von Pleurotoma (Columbarium) spinicincta Mart., Cymbium oUa und Voluta (Psephaea) concinua Brod. Letztere weicht in sofern von den Voluten ab, als sie drei Platten in jedem Gliede besitzt. Dieses Verhalten veranlasst v. Martens zu der Bemerkung, dass die Radula der Voluten aus einer dreireihigen durch Verschwinden der Seitenplatten abzu- leiten sei, und er erklärt sich gegen eine Spaltung der Volutiden in zwei Familien. Gwyn Jeffreys setzte die Bearbeitung der während der Expeditionen des „Lightning" und „Porcupine'' ge- sammelten Mollusken fort (vergl.

    Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Guide to Users Background What is the summary for and where does it come from? This summary has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. It highlights important elements of the biodiversity of the region in two ways: • Listing species which may be significant for management because they are found only in the region, mainly in the region, or they have a conservation status such as endangered or vulnerable. • Comparing the region to other parts of Australia in terms of the composition and distribution of its species, to suggest components of its biodiversity which may be nationally significant. The summary was produced using the Australian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. The list of families covered in ANHAT is shown in Appendix 1. Craig*** * PO Box 3123, Onerahi, Whangarei, New Zealand ([email protected]) ** Department of Anthropology, University of Otago, PO Box 56, Dunedin, New Zealand ([email protected]) *** 31 Yeovil Rd, Te Atatu Peninsula, Auckland, New Zealand ([email protected]) ABSTRACT: Thirty-seven species of terrestrial molluscs (36 landsnails and one slug) are recorded from Miti‘äro, a low-lying makatea island in the southern Cook Islands. The fauna was found to consist predominantly of non-indigenous and cryptogenic species, and lacked local endemics. Comparison of fossil and modern assemblages indicates declines and extirpation/extinction of some species, including three species of Endodontidae, over the last several hundred years. There have also been synanthropic introductions of many non-indigenous species, beginning in the prehistoric period, and including a major influx over the last 100 years or so of species ultimately derived from source areas outside the Pacific basin. KEYWORDS: Pacific Ocean, landsnail fauna, fossil landsnails, non-indigenous species, extinctions, Holocene faunal changes. Introduction earliest known collections of landsnails from Miti‘äro were made by Sir Peter Buck in 1929 and are held by Miti‘äro (latitude 19°52'S, longitude 157°42'W) in the the Bernice P.Bishop Museum, Honolulu. Craig (1995) Cook Islands archipelago, southeastern Polynesia, is in a pro duced the first account of the landsnail fauna of Miti‘äro, group of four islands collectively known as Ngaputoru.

Abstract - Sri Lankan snails have a complex history that might be linked to events ranging from Mesozoic plate tectonics and climate change on a global scale to more recent regional climate change and human impact. The fauna could include ancient groups that may have been present in Pangaea, diversified in Gondwana and survived in Deccan Plate refugia at the KIT boundary and Pangaean taxa that arrived via Eurasia. Taxa could have been assimilated from continental fragments encountered during the northward rafting of the Deccan Plate. Fauna colonising immediately following Eurasian contact could have been a regional fauna associated with Tibetan plateau plate fragments. There may have been a brief period when an Arabian corridor was open to African faunas and there was likely to have been a succession of immigrants through the Assam corridor or through long distance dispersal. The presence of Acavus and Oligospira as endemic acavoids in Sri Lanka and the complete absence of acavoids from India as well as the presence of at least 10 species of CoriIla and only one in India, give a greater potential Gondwanan identity to Sri Lanka's snail fauna. A similar pattern with Tortulosa may also have ancient origins. It is possible, but perhaps doubtful, that this picture has been sustained since the KIT boundary.

Zoosystema 22 (4) : 689-707. RÉSUMÉ La faune d’Endodontidae des îles Gambier (Polynésie orientale), telle que l’avaient révélée les récoltes de la Mangarevan Expedition en 1934, comprenait quatre genres (dont trois endémiques) et 24 espèces (toutes endémiques). De nouvelles récoltes effectuées en 1997 ont permis la découverte de six nouvelles espèces additionnelles : Minidonta perminima, M. flammulina, M. vallonia, Anceyodonta gatavakensis, A. umbilicata et Rikitea tapinoptyx, ce qui confirme cette radiation comme la plus riche en espèces de toute la Polynésie.
