List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". Corresponding author: G.P.Laliotis; [email protected] Original scientific paper Abstract: Highly endangered local breeds are considered important not only for the maintenance of their genetic diversity for future survival but also because they regarded as part of the cultural heritage of the local and national communities. Using pedigree data and an analysis of 18 microsatellite loci we investigated the genetic diversity of a private (commercial) indigenous Skyros horse population, reared in an insular region of North-Western of Greece. The overall average animal inbreeding value reached 24%. Concerning average inbreeding value over non founding animals, it was estimated to 0.013, while the corresponding value over inbred animals were 0.13.The mean number of alleles per locus amounted to 3.72, ranging between 1 and 7 alleles. The average observed heterozygosity was 0.57. Taking into account the inbreeding estimated index, an average heterozygote deficit (Fis) of -0.09 was noted (P<0.05). Although the population maintained reasonable levels of genetic diversity, well studied inbreeding strategies should be implemented, in order to reduce the loss of genetic variability, to avoid extinction and further genetic drift of the population. Analisi Molecolari Come previsto nel terzo anno del PSRN-Biodiversità - sottomisura 10.2 progetto EQUINBIO, proponente ANACRHAI, è proseguita l’attività di raccolta dei campioni genetici sulle popolazioni equine ed asinine da registro anagrafico (RAE) interessate dal progetto, sulle quali si è proceduto ad analisi genomica. In mancanza di genealogie accertate e, in aggravio, fenotipi simili se non addirittura sovrapponibili tra le popolazioni, la caratterizzazione delle singole realtà diventa molto difficile. Tutte le popolazioni sono state esaminate con gli strumenti genomici disponibili (SNP-CHIP) cercando di evidenziare differenze significative tra i gruppi. -

They are quite variable and may range from the common white markings up to completely white horses. EDNRB, KIT, MITF, PAX3, and TRPM1 represent known candidate genes for white spotting phenotypes in horses. For the present study, we investigated an American Paint Horse family segregating a phenotype involving white spotting and blue eyes. Six of eight horses with the white-spotting phenotype were deaf. We obtained whole genome sequence data from an affected horse and specifically searched for structural variants in the known candidate genes. This analysis revealed a heterozygous ~63 kb deletion spanning exons 6-9 of the MITF gene (chr16:21,503,211_21,566,617). We confirmed the breakpoints of the deletion by PCR and Sanger sequencing. -

European Regional Focal Point for Animal Genetic Resources (ERFP) 21 st April 2011 ERFP Country report 2010 – 2011 COUNTRY: ITALY reported by: Giovanni Bittante Strategic Priority Area 1: Characterization, Inventory and Monitoring of Trends and Associated Risks The inventory of Italian animal genetic resources and the monitoring of trends and associated risks has been undertaken and summarized il the paper "Italian animal genetic resources in the Domestic Animal Diversity Information Systm of FAO" (Giovanni Bittante, 2011, Italian Journal of Animal Science,vol 10:e29, Annex 2). Several research activities on this topic have been carried out by Universities and Research Institutions. Among them see the important activity of ConSDABI (Annex 3). Strategic Priority Area 2: Sustainable Use and Development Beyond the systematic control of animals of Italian populations (herd books, pedigree registries, milk recording, type evaluation, etc.) made by the different associations of breeders, as outlined in Annex 2, several projects dealing with sustainable use, products valorisation and development has been carried out by national and local governments, agencies, breeders associations and consortia.
