4. Language Across the Curriculum (LAC) Activities LAC lunchtime activities, a combination of challenging activities and meaningful accomplishments, keep students motivated and break the monotony a little by stretching their learning opportunities through activities outside the classroom. A series of word game competitions was held monthly in the 1st term. They were the ‘S1-S3 Spellbulary Tournament’ and the ‘S1-S2 Jumble Scrabble Competition’. The winning classes had to display their knowledge of a wide range of academic vocabulary from various EMI content subjects in terms of spelling and meaning. To promote reading across the curriculum, all EMI content subject teachers took the lead to introduce a subject-related book to their classes in September. This ‘Bring a Book to Class’ practice was followed by a ‘Cross-Curricular Thematic Book Display’ organized at the school library. Biographies about famous women from the school library and Hong Kong Central Library were on display. Other fringe activities for the whole school, like the poll for ‘My Favourite Heroine’ and ‘Matching Game’ via True Vision were organized to encourage more students to check out the biographies displayed. The highlight was the ‘S1-S2 Reading Scavenger Hunt’ on the last two days. The tailor-made hunt adopted a multimodality approach, which also helped promote students’ multimodal literacy apart from reading extensively and across the curriculum. 7 V. School Development Plan and Major Concerns 1. School Development Plan 2015/16 – 2017/18 The slogan‘ Strive for the Best Performance, Live with a Better Balance’ encapsulates our main goals from 2015 to 2018. We aim to motivate our students to strive for the best and excel themselves, and encourage students to mindfully connect with their inner selves, their everyday lives and others so as to strike a better balance between their personal and life development. Collaborative efforts have been made by different subjects and departments to achieve the goals.

2. Major Concerns 2015/16 a. Strive for the Best Performance A major concern this year focuses on providing effective feedback to motivate students to strive for their best and excel themselves. Each panel subjects reviewed its feedback policies and practices, and identified a focused area or adopted general strategies. Policies regarding giving effective feedback and monitoring follow-up were developed or further improved to close the gap between students’ performance and the desired learning outcomes.

Highlights of some subject panels’ reflection on their efforts in the area are as follows: . English: Effective feedback stimulated senior form students to reflect on their learning. . Computer Literacy: E-learning platforms, such as Edmodo and Schoology, are very helpful because they allow teachers to give quality feedback. . Liberal Studies: In senior forms, rubrics were made simple and focused. Students were in- spired to broaden their patterns of thought, supporting their opinions with examples and by linking relevant concepts. . Visual Arts and Aesthetic Development: Students were given oral feedback when producing their artwork. When they finished their work, there would be both spoken and written peer assessment and self-evaluation. Students learned to produce art, appreciate art and accept opinions. . Social Sciences and Religious Studies: Rubrics were set based on learning objectives. Students’ weaknesses in their study habits were discussed on Edmodo or in class. Weak students were given individual guidance. When time allowed, students were asked to rewrite certain parts of their works.

8 b. Live with a Better Balance To encourage students to build a stronger connection between their inner selves, their everyday lives and others so as to better balance their personal and life development, we first drew students’ attention to their awareness of the self and the balanced life. Lessons and activities were organized by departments, forms and subjects (Religious Studies, Home Economics and Physical Education) to help students gain knowledge about a balanced life.

i. To Raise the Awareness of the Physical Self (Physical Health) More knowledge about health was imparted to students so that they could make better dietary choices. o Professional talks: 2 talks about Chinese medicine and nutrition were held on September 24 2015 and January 18 2016. Ms Charlotte Lor, a registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner, and Dr Lau Mei Ming, a registered Dietitian, were invited to speak to all teachers and students.

Ms Charlotte Lor Dr Lau Mei Ming

o Activities and Programmes: Different departments and subjects worked together to encourage students to do exercise regularly and to be alive to the sense of well-being. . 「感『動』時刻」 ‘Feel your body, feel your heart’ : An exercise session inviting all students to stretch was arranged in each Morning Assembly. Altogether 9 stretching sessions led by 2 teams of students were held.

9 . ‘Morning Run’: Each S1 class had to go running on the school sports ground once a cycle. Each session was about 20 minutes and was overseen by S3 students. Despite finding it a challenge, most S1 students agreed that it raised their awareness of their fitness level.

. Home Economic Lessons: Junior form students learned about nutrition labels, healthy eating styles and food ingredients in Home Economic lessons. They also learned to make better dietary choices for a healthier body.

ii. To Raise the Awareness of the Needs of Inner Self and Others Students would take a break from schoolwork and recharge from mindfulness experiences in order to connect better with their inner self and others. o Mindfulness Exercises: In Religious Studies lessons, students would take a break and recharge from mindfulness exercises for deep self-reflection. o Planting Activities: Participating in planting and reaping the harvest, students learnt to appreciate life and growth, and found peace. . ‘J Farm’: A small group of about 10 students was formed to plant different kinds of vegetables and flowers of their choice. . S1 students: S1 students were divided into groups to plant vegetables in the 1st term.

10 iii. To Develop and Enhance Skills to Lead a Balanced Life o Goal Setting and Action Plan for a Balanced Development: At the beginning of the academic year, students were given guidance in class periods to set their own goals in different aspects, such as academic performance, interpersonal relationship and life-planning. At the end of the 1st and 2nd terms, students reflected on and reviewed their action plans and performance for self-appreciation and further improvement. Through the concerted effort of form teachers and ECA team leaders, activities or training in line with the themes of each form or group were successfully carried out. Students’ understanding and awareness of a balanced life were devel- oped as teachers continue to help develop their skills of building and maintaining a balanced life.

o Better Time Management . S1, S3 and S4 Students: Guided activities on time management were held. Students were encouraged to review their schedules and made adjustments in order to maintain a balanced life. Below are the topics of focus in the different forms:

S1 My Study Habits Where Has Time Gone? S2 Time Management and Goal Setting S3 Time Management through Life Journey

. ECA Groups: Teacher advisors assisted their committee members to prioritize their goals to be achieved and balance their time between studying and participating in ECAs.

Inclusive Education Team The Inclusive Education Team was formed to devise polices and practices and cultivate an inclusive culture for the implementation of inclusion policies issued by the EDB. Regular meetings among teachers, social workers and parents were held to evaluate and discuss the supporting strategies for students with SEN.
