School Motto ‘Thou art the Light of the World.’ 爾乃世之光( ) (Matthew 5:14) We hope our students can become ‘True Light of the World’—the future light-bearers and seed-sowers of the Christian faith. II. School Mission In pursuit of the Christian ideal of love and equality, True Light provides whole-person Christian education for women in the spirit of the school motto, ‘Thou art the light of the world’. It is our tradition to promote among our students creativity, innovation, altruism and the pursuit of excellence. At the same time, we embrace the belief ‘education is life’. Through participation in diverse school activities, our students achieve balanced development in various domains, namely moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, social and spiritual aspects. Our Staff We had 85 members of staff in total, including 1 principal, 2 vice-principals, 58 teachers (3 na- tive-speaking English teachers), 2 laboratory technicians, and 16 clerical staffers. Collaboration with the Education Bureau Our Chinese History Panel Chairperson, Miss Au Po Man, was seconded to the School Support Partners (SSP) Scheme on a part-time basis under the School-based Professional Support (SBPS) Programmes (校本專業支援發展組) of the EDB in 2015/16. She worked alongside the Bureau’s school development officers to support of e-learning and teaching in secondary schools across the territory. Miss Lam Tsz Wai Eva, Panel Chairperson of Integrated Science, and Mr Ha Chi Hung, Panel Chairperson of ICT, joined the Information Technology in Education Section of the EDB on part-time secondment to contribute to the Bureau’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) Scheme. They were responsible for conducting school visits and offering on-site support to schools in Hong Kong on pedagogical, technological as well as managerial issues related to the implementation of IT in Education. 2 b. Assessment for Learning: Effective Feedback In line with the development of the school, our Staff Development Team and Academic Affairs Section jointly organised two staff development activities inspired by this year’s major concern, ‘Assessment for Learning: Effective Feedback’. On August 26 2015, a workshop titled ‘Providing Effective Feedback to Motivate Students to Strive for their Best and Excel themselves’ was held. During the workshop, Vice-principal Miss Hui Tuen Yung first explained the rationale and implementation procedures of giving students effective feedback to all teachers. Then, teachers of different subjects shared their implementation plans. A sharing session titled ‘A Reflection of the Implementation of the Major Concern: Providing Effective Feedback in 2015/16’ initiated by the Staff Development Team and the Academic Affairs Section was held on June 6 2016. Some of the subject panel chairpersons and teachers were invited to share their experience in implementing the refreshed measures to provide students feedback and their reflection on these strategies. c. E-learning Our school has been putting strenuous efforts into implementing e-learning inside and outside the classroom for a number of years and the results have been encouraging. A lot of colleagues make good use of online IT tools to enhance the effectiveness of teaching. To further polish our teachers’ skills, the Staff Development Team invited our teachers Mr. Ha Chi Hung, Miss Lam Tsz Wai and Miss Au Po Man to share with the teaching staff their expertise on June 6 2016. The contents of the sharing sessions included: . Using Google document to facilitate collaborative learning . Using Explain Everything to facilitate classroom teaching . Using Nearpod to facilitate interactive learning . Using Edmodo to facilitate assessment for learning . Using Notability to facilitate classroom teaching . Using EduVenture to facilitate self-directed learning in the outdoor environment Our development in e-learning has garnered a good reputation in the territory. The following are some highlights of our efforts in promoting e-learning in the region this year: January 14 About 10 guests from Po Kok Secondary School, including the principal, first visited TL Oasis and learnt about our vision of e-learning and self-directed learning, and our preparation and plans for upgrading our e-learning and self-directed learning facilities. Then, together with teachers from several other schools, they participated in a Chinese History e-learning workshop, in which Miss Au Po Man and Chinese History teachers from other schools shared their experience. 3 January 22 About 40 guests from Bethel High School, including the principal, visited our school to learn more about our development in e-learning. January 25 8 teachers from Yangshuo English Experiment Middle School visited True Light. They toured around TL Oasis, participated in classroom observations and engaged in professional exchanges with our teaching staff. March 11 About 11 guests from CCC Heep Woh College visited True Light. After taking a trip around TL Oasis, they had a meeting with our principal and chairpersons of our English, Computer Literacy and Integrated Science departments about the implementation of e-learning in teaching and learning. EDB organized a lesson observation for the Chinese History Teachers (中國歷史科教師學習社群). Our Chinese History teacher Miss Au Po Man demonstrated how the use of IT can facilitate the studying of historical materials. April 14 The Quality Assurance Sections of the EDB shot a video of Mr Ha Chi Hung’s Mathematics lesson with S3A in which the ‘flipped classroom’ approach was adopted for future teacher professional development and training purposes. April 21 Dr Law Sin Yee of the Education University of Hong Kong and 12 teachers from Saint Paul School Macau visited to observe our ‘flipped classroom’ and exchange professional insights with our teaching staff. April 22 EDB organized another lesson observation for the Chinese History Teachers, titled: 抗日戰爭: 一課兩講 (包括史料學習及電子學習教學元素), which was conducted by our Chinese History teacher, Miss Kwong Man Wai. May 25 Over 30 seconded teachers from 20 Centres of Excellence visited our school. to un- derstand the rationale of the design of TL Oasis, and our application of the ‘flipped classroom’ approach and 3D printing to teaching. June 17 Invited by the Faculty of Education, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, our school received 30 students from the Faculty in the afternoon and introduced to them the implementation of e-learning in our school. d. Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs With inclusive education a focus in today’s education, as well as working in line with ‘school ethos and student support’, a professional talk on supporting students with special educational needs (SEN) was held on January 4 2016. Dr Poon Chung Yee from the Centre for Special Educational Needs and Inclusive Education was our guest speaker. He shared his experience and thoughts on working with students with SEN as well as introduced to us theories on teaching students with SEN. 4 We were also honoured to have an educational psychologist from the EDB visiting us to deliver a seminar titled ‘Identifying and Supporting Students with Suicidal Tendencies’ on March 23. e. Continued Professional Development Hours In this academic year, the total number of Continued Professional Development Hours taken by our teaching staff was 1400. In other words, on average each teacher took part in 23 hours of staff development in the aforementioned period. 6. Celebration of 81st School Anniversary May 7 was a memorable day for alumni, parents, staff and guests.
