During the Heian Period (794-1185 AD) the shrine was under Imperial Patronnage, before being elevated to the highest rank of Shinto Shrine in 942 AD. It is still to this day one of the most important shrines in Japan and one of the most picturesque with around 10,000 Torii gates. You will then be visiting Heian Jingu, or Heian Shinto Shrine, a replica of an ancient imperial palace and a symbol of the rebirth of Kyoto after World War 2 – the enormous vermillion orange tori gate is unforgettable! After your visit of Kyoto you will be heading to Naruto to board your Naruto whirlpool cruise. The fascinating tidal whirlpools are unlike anything you've ever seen before. They occur in the Naruto Strait, connecting the Pacific Ocean and the Inland Sea – between the main land Honshu and Shikoku. After your cruise, the day will end with an opportunity to relax at the Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu, one of the most famous historical gardens in Japan – built around the 17th century. It features a tea house, various art exhibits, various bridges, footpaths and hills overlooking a masterfully kept garden. DAY 5 Destination Takamatsu Matsuyama Beppu Meals included Breakfast Hotel 3 Hotel Aile Beppu, or similar Head to Shikoku Mura, an open air architectural park housing more than twenty buildings dating back to the Edo Period. On the way to Beppu – the final destination for today, you will be stopping at Dogo Onsen, believed to be the oldest hot spring in Japan with a history stretching back for more than 1,000 years. It has offered a place of relaxation for many famous Japanese writers and poets over the years, as well as for the Emperor. It is also famous for being the inspiration behind the movie Spirited Away. From here enjoy some leisure time at the hotel in Beppu, soaking in the waters of one of the famous hot springs in Japan. A Study on the Location of Castle and Urban Structure of Castle-town by Watershed Based Analysis LIM Luong1, SASAKI Yoh2 1Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Waseda University (3-4-1 Okubo, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 169-8555, Japan) E-mail:[email protected] 2Member of JSCE, Professor, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Eng., Waseda University (3-4-1 Okubo, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 169-8555, Japan) E-mail:[email protected] This research seeks to identify the urban planning methods for sustainable development by introducting watershed based analysis. From the view point of the ecological aspects, characteristics of Japanese cas- tle-town, JYOKAMACHI, was dedicated as one of important factors to identify urban planning methods. Therefore, the location of castle and its urban structure were investigated. GIS is used to analyze the loca- tion of castle and its urban structure by mean of watershed based analysis. Results showed that among 86 castle locations, about 34% of castle locations of Hilltop, Mountaintop and Flatland is located on the catchment edge, 60% is located near by the catchment edge and 6% is located in the middle of the catch- ment edge. 88% of most of the castle locations was found located at the highest elevation area comparing to its surrounding and within the catchment it’s located. It can be said that most of the castle locations tends to be located at the highest elevation area as a unit of watershed. 10 cases of overlaying maps between urban structure of castle-town in edo period and catchment maps showed that urban structure of castle-town had strong relationship with watershed.

I would like to thank primarily the members of my committee, Susan Napier, Patricia Maclachlan, Jordan Sand, Chris Long, and John Traphagan, who stayed with me through all the twists and turns of the project. Their significant scholarly contributions aside, I owe each of them a debt for his or her patience alone. Friends and contacts in Japan, Austin, and elsewhere gave guidance and assistance, both tangible and spiritual, as I sought to think about approaches broader than the immediate issues of the work, to make connections at various sites, and to locate materials for the research.

  • Report & Questionnaire
RESEARCH REPORT 1. Name: Brian Scott Aitken (ID No.: SP11001) 2. Current affiliation: University of Florida 3. Research fields and specialties: Chemistry 4. Host institution: Kyoto University 5. Host researcher: Chujo Yoshiki 6. Description of your current research. Using acyclic diene metathesis polymerization (ADMET), we synthesized and photophysically characterized a set of charge transporting materials (conductive plastics) where the charge mobility (similar to conductivity) was controlled by precise variation of the distance between conductive moieties along inert polymer backbones. This work was designed for eventual application as charge transporting layers in light emitting diodes (LEDs) to be studied at a later date at the University of Florida. Using current NSF support (DMR-0703261), we have already demonstrated and published on the utility of ADMET in the preparation of regioregular electroactive polyolefins (a new type of light emitting layer in LEDs) therefore this work was a simple extension of earlier research but required instrumentation (a time of flight charge mobility analyzer) available at Kyoto University and not at UF. While the effect of distance on photophysics in small molecules has been well documented, no such study as the kind conducted here has been undertaken for a polymeric system. This work has provided both a deeper understanding of the relative importance of various structural parameters to charge mobility in polymers (plastics which are much easier and cheaper to process and manufacture than other current electronic materials) while demonstrating a new method for control thereof and is thus of utmost importance to the field of organic electronics. Moreover, as global economic development continues, the field of organic electronics will remain one of the most actively studied due to the ever increasing demand for economical and energy efficient electronic devices, particularly those used for lighting and solar energy conversion.
