ABSTRACT DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE WESTFIELD, ALWYN W BA. HONORS UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX, 1976 MS. LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON, 1977 THE IMPACT OF LEADERSHIP ON POLITICS AND POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT IN ST VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES UNDER EBENEZER THEODORE JOSHUA AND ROBERT MILTON CATO Committee Chair: Dr. F.SJ. Ledgister Dissertation dated May 2012 This study examines the contributions of Joshua and Cato as government and opposition political leaders in the politics and political development of SVG. Checklist of variable of political development is used to ensure objectivity. Various theories of leadership and political development are highlighted. The researcher found that these theories cannot fully explain the conditions existing in small island nations like SVG. SVG is among the few nations which went through stages of transition from colonialism to associate statehood, to independence. This had significant effect on the people and particularly the leaders who inherited a bankrupt country with limited resources and 1 persistent civil disobedience. With regards to political development, the mass of the population saw this as some sort of salvation for fulfillment of their hopes and aspirations. Joshua and Cato led the country for over thirty years. In that period, they have significantly changed the country both in positive and negative directions. These leaders made promises of a better tomorrow if their followers are prepared to make sacrifices. The people obliged with sacrifices, only to become disillusioned because they have not witnessed the promised salvation. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that in the process of competing for political power, these leaders have created a series of social ills in SVG.

After presenting the theoretical basis for this report, which builds on an earlier project’s publication (Doomernik & Ardon 2018) and is enriched by the empirical findings of the CEASEVAL research that connects the relevance of a local perspective with an analysis and review of alternative forms of shaping the Common European Asylum System. To transform the CEAS into a sustainable and equitable common asylum and migration framework this report points towards three possible fundamental changes that might make the CEAS more sustainable and foster equity.

Introduction In this essay, I will address two writers or, more specifically, two books which at first glance seem to compete with each other for the oddest, the most unlikely constellation of characters and settings and the most unusual forms of cultural contact. I am referring here to Jeannette Lander's debut novel, published in 1971, Ein Sommer in der Woche der Itke K, and Hans J. Massaquoi's book of memoirs, published in 1999, Destined to Witness: Growing Up Black in Nazi Germany (published in German under the title Neger, Neger, Schornsteinfeger). In the case of Massaquoi, many reviews appearing in the American and German press after its release reiterated the sheer surprise and astonishment that such a case, that of a black German boy growing up in Nazi Germany, even existed and commented on the text as a documentation of this 'rare specimen', this 'unique figure' which Massaquoi seems to present in his first person narrative.1 In the case of Lander, the 'oddity' of her young female Jewish ' The following sample of references captures this general tone with its rhetoric of 'uniqueness.' • Bogdan Denitch
Bogdan Denitch Perhaps ironically, shortly after writing the following memorial for Arthur Lipow, longtime New Politics sponsor Bogdan Denitch died on March 28 at the age of 86. Bogdan’s association with NP reaches back to the first issue of our current series in 1986, for which he penned a piece making the case for the American left to provide critical support for the Nicaraguan Sandinistas, then engaged in a civil war with the U.S.-backed right-wing Contra army. Born a Kosovar Serb, Bogdan became a steelworker and later a professor of sociology at two City University of New York (CUNY) schools, Queens College and the CUNY Graduate Center, and wrote a number of books about Yugoslavia under Marshall Tito and its dissolution, most famously Ethnic Nationalism: The Tragic Death of Yugoslavia (University of Minnesota Press, 1994). He was also very active in the civil rights movement in the 1950s and early 1960s. For most of his adult life Bogdan identified with the third- camp democratic socialist tradition promoted by NP, even as he joined the editorial board of Irving Howe’s less radical journal Dissent. He was a founding member of the Young Socialist League (YSL) in 1954, bringing the not-yet-famous Michael Harrington with him. Both Harrington and Bogdan went along with the merger of the YSL and its “parent organization,” the Independent Socialist League, into the more politically moderate Socialist Party (SP) of Norman Thomas and its Young People’s Socialist League. But while Harrington became an SP leader and remained so until the early 1970s, Bogdan left the SP milieu in the early 1960s, disgusted by the conversion of many of his erstwhile comrades into Cold War social democrats who supported not only the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba but, soon afterward, the escalation of the Vietnam War.
