Vor 100 Jahren lernte Tarzan lesen und schreiben „Aaaaaihaihaaaaihaihaaaaa!“ – sicherlich haben Sie diesen Schrei gleich als den berühmten Tarzanschrei erkannt und erinnern sich zurück an die Tarzan-Comics Ihrer Jugend, an die Tarzanfilme mit Johnny Weismüller und Lex Barker oder an die Disney-Verfilmung und vielleicht an einen der 26 Tarzan- Romane des Amerikaners Edgar Rice Burroughs. Aber wie Tarzan lesen und schreiben gelernt hat, daran erinnert sich meistens kaum einer. Tarzans unglaubliche Lese- und Schreiblerngeschichte steht in dem ersten Band der Romanserie „Tarzan bei den Affen", der vor genau hundert Jahren im September/Oktober 1912 zum ersten Mal erschienen ist. Tarzan war bekanntlich als Säugling von den Affen geraubt und großgezogen worden. Von ihnen lernte er auch die Affensprache, die lediglich auf einer reduzierten mündlichen Basis bestand. Auf seinen Streifzügen durch den Dschungel entdeckt der Zehnjährige die Hütte seines Vaters und dort findet er eine Fibel. Mit Hilfe der Bilder und der Bildunterschriften, deren Buchstaben er zunächst für „eine seltene Art Käfer" hält, bringt er sich selbst das Lesen bei, was ihm bei denjenigen Abbildungen, die er aus der Dschungelwelt kennt, leichter gelingt als bei „Eisenbahn" oder „Schiff" – eine wichtige Bestätigung des in der Erwachsenenalphabetisierung angewandten Spracherfahrungsansatzes, der die Alltagserfahrung des Lernenden zum Ausgangspunkt des Lese- und Schreiblernprozesses macht. You worked as a dramaturg on For Eyes Only, which was a project of the Solidarity artistic production group at the East German DEFA Film Studio. Could you please explain the structure of artistic groups within the studio... At the end of 1956, director Kurt Maetzig1 openly declared that “the time was ripe“ for founding artistic groups with more autonomy in script development and production. In the following years, directors, writers and other film artists responded to his call and formed artistic groups that each had its own dramaturg. The assumption that the Communist dictatorship in the German Democratic Republic 11 (GDR) drove many people to suicide has persisted for decades, and it is still evident in academic 12 and public discourse. Yet, high suicide rates in eastern Germany, which can be traced back to the 13 nineteenth century, cannot be a result of a particular political system. Be it monarchy, 14 democracy, fascism, or socialism, the frequency of suicide there did not change significantly. In 15 fact, the share of politically motivated suicides in the GDR amounts to only 1–2 per cent of the 16 total. Political, economic, or socio-cultural factors did not have a significant impact on suicide 17 rates. An analysis of two subsets of GDR society that were more likely to be affected by 18 repression—prisoners and army recruits—further corroborates this: there is no evidence of a 19 higher suicide rate in either case. Complimentary to a quantitative approach “from above,” a qualitative analysis “from below” not only underlines the limited importance of repression, but 20 also points to a regional pattern of behavior linked to cultural influences and to the role of 21 religion—specifically, to Protestantism. Several factors nevertheless fostered the persistence of 22 an overly politicized interpretation of suicide in the GDR: the bereaved in the East, the media in 23 the West, and a few victims of suicide themselves blamed the regime and downplayed important 24 individual and pathological aspects. -

Rosen Sunday, December 7, 2008; W14 In the fall of 2007, I had been working for several months on a proposal for the authorized biography of Cheeta, Johnny Weissmuller's sidekick in MGM's Tarzan movies of the 1930s and '40s. Against all odds, Cheeta was still alive at the age of 75, 20 years older than a captive chimp's normal life span. When the agent for Cheeta and his owner, Dan Westfall, had first approached me about writing the biography, I was astonished that a fixture of not just my own childhood, but my parents', as well, one of the most celebrated animals in movie history, was retired in Palm Springs, Calif., selling his paintings for $135 donations to thousands of far-flung admirers. His birthday parties were now covered by national, and even international, media. At Cheeta's 75th birthday party, his owner, who runs a non-profit primate sanctuary, had played a video of Jane Goodall attempting to sing "Happy Birthday" to him in the pant-hooting language of the wild chimps she had first observed in Tanzania in the early 1960s. Could there be higher tribute to a chimp than that? I was too absorbed in the many fascinating aspects of my research -- the history of men and their captive chimps, the early days of Hollywood animal training, the evolution of the Tarzan franchise, newspaper clips about Cheeta, not to mention a meeting with the fading star himself -- to indulge any incipient doubts about Cheeta's true identity. -

When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -
