  • Allen W. Dulles and the CIA
THE GILDED AGE Allen W. Dulles and the CIA Allen W. Dulles spent his tenure as the Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) entrenched in secret power struggles that would ensure his ultimate power over the foreign and domestic aff airs for the United States. Th roughout his childhood, Dulles learned to use political power in order to get ahead, and to use secrecy to make unilateral deci- sions. Aft er analyzing examples of his treatment of various foreign aff airs disasters, as well as his manipulation of American media and politicians, Dulles is exposed as a man whose legacy lives in the CIA, as a legendary fi gure who is in fact much more of a craft ed legend than a man of truth. By Sada O. Stewart ‘16 Princeton University of the CIA’s own making, the product of the publicity and the political propaganda Allen Dulles manufactured in the 1950s.”4 How, though, did Dulles craft a fl awless, genius im- age for the CIA? What methods did Dulles use to manipulate the press, the public, and even the other branches of govern- ment to bring forth an agency with “a great reputation and a terrible record?”5 Dulles made the CIA seem like an elite agency full of top agents resulting in high risk, high reward missions—how is this reconciled with the reality of the CIA under Dulles’ reign? INTELLIGENCE IN YOUTH To begin, it is vital to identify the signifi cance of developing and running an intelligence agency in an open democratic system.6 Sun Tzu, author of Th e Art of War, insists the best A Bas-relief of Allen Dulles at the Original Headquarters of (only) way to fi ght a war is to know the enemy.

  • The Role of Allen Dulles in Us Policy Discussions on Latin America, 1953-611
THE PRAGMATIC FACE OF THE COVERT IDEALIST: THE ROLE OF ALLEN DULLES IN US POLICY DISCUSSIONS ON LATIN AMERICA, 1953-611 Assessments of the CIA’s role in Latin America during the 1950s have tended to focus predominantly on the twin case-studies of Guatemala and Cuba. Consequently, the Agency’s role – and, more broadly, that of its head Allen Dulles – has come to be seen as one obsessed with covert action and relatively unimportant in terms of policy discussions. Dulles, in fact, has been portrayed as an unwilling and disinterested participant in policy discussions. The present article will challenge those assertions by suggesting that, by examining Dulles’s role in the Eisenhower administration’s discussions on Latin America, a different picture emerges – one that paints Dulles as an active and rational participant, and which raises important questions for our understanding of the CIA’s role during the Eisenhower era. ‘In the 1950s’, writes Greg Grandin in describing the Central Intelligence Agency’s role in Guatemala in 1954, ‘the Cold War was often presented as a battle of ideas, yet CIA agents on the ground didn’t see it that way’…they insisted ‘on a strategy intended to inspire fear more than virtue.’2 Grandin’s view – along with the widely held perception among many non- specialists that the 1950s served as a form of ‘golden age’ for the CIA – has come to dominate historical, and indeed cultural, representations of the Agency’s role in the early- Cold War era. During the period when Dwight D. Eisenhower was president and Allen Dulles was the Director of Central Intelligence (DCI), it is commonly held, the CIA enjoyed a position of unparalleled success in US foreign policy.

ULUSLARARASI HZ. NUH VE CUDİ DAGI SEMPOZYUMU International "Noah and Judi Mountain" Symposium 27-29 EYLÜL 2013 ŞIRNAK Editörler Doç. Dr. Harndi GÜNDOGAR Yrd. Doç. Dr. Ömer Ali YILDIRIM Yrd. Doç. Dr. M. Ata AZ The Role of Science in D etermining the Resting Place of the Ark Anne HABERMEHL * pıtroduction It is about 700 years since the traditions of the location of Noah's Ark moved from Mount Cudi to Mount Ararat (Crouse and Franz 2006). During that time, most of the world has been unaware that previously Mount Cudi had been considered the place where the Ark landed. How belief changed with regard to the Ark's location is a story that involves the history of the Armenians and the changing boundaries of their country over time (Bailey 1989, 58-61). Eventually, Mount Cudi was no longer within the borders of Armenia. But there was a certain logic to the idea that the Ark would have landed on a high and majestic mountain, such as their sacred Masis, the name by which Armenians call Mount Ararat (Dwight 1855; Bailey 1989, 54). This fervent belief that the Ark is on Mount Ararat has fueled many search expeditions, especially in more re cent times. The amount of effort and money poured into these repeated unsuccessful expeditions has been enormous. But we need to ask ourselves: with all the effort that has been poured into the search on Mount Ararat, why has nobody yet found the Ark? If an enormous object like the Ark really is anywhere on Mount Ararat, surely it should have been located by now.

Today we celebrate all veterans of the 55th/53rd Australian Infantry Battalion and commemorate their achievements at Sanananda on the 75th anniversary of the battle that commenced on 7 December 1942. The soldiers that served in the Battalion volunteered for service from all over Australia, from varied walks of life, and from other nations. Together they reinforced that wonderful Aussie concept of mateship. They have our eternal gratitude for their courage, spirit and dedication in serving Australia and keeping our country a safe and free nation - a legacy that we so gratefully continue to enjoy today. There have been many commemorative re-unions over past years but we trust that this one today will be notable for you through its solemnity at the Cenotaph and the contribution of our special guests.

AND TERRORIST TRAVEL Staff Report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States 9/11 AND TERRORIST TRAVEL Staff Report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States By Thomas R. Eldridge Susan Ginsburg Walter T. Hempel II Janice L. Kephart Kelly Moore and Joanne M. Accolla, Staff Assistant Alice Falk, Editor Note from the Executive Director The Commission staff organized its work around specialized studies, or monographs, prepared by each of the teams. We used some of the evolving draft material for these studies in preparing the seventeen staff statements delivered in conjunction with the Commission’s 2004 public hearings. We used more of this material in preparing draft sections of the Commission’s final report. Some of the specialized staff work, while not appropriate for inclusion in the report, nonetheless offered substantial information or analysis that was not well represented in the Commission’s report. In a few cases this supplemental work could be prepared to a publishable standard, either in an unclassified or classified form, before the Commission expired. This study is on immigration, border security and terrorist travel issues. It was prepared principally by Thomas Eldridge, Susan Ginsburg, Walter T. Hempel II, Janice Kephart, and Kelly Moore, with assistance from Joanne Accolla, and editing assistance from Alice Falk. As in all staff studies, they often relied on work done by their colleagues. This is a study by Commission staff. While the Commissioners have been briefed on the work and have had the opportunity to review earlier drafts of some of this work, they have not approved this text and it does not necessarily reflect their views.
