It was first used by Italian artisans as a background filling stitch in Assisi embroidery during the sixteenth century. The use of this stitch spread to other regions of Europe, such as Germany and Czechoslovakia, during the seventeenth century and ultimately to the United States of America where it was used occasionally. The stitch is a reversible, pulled stitch that can be recognized in needlework by the holes (or perforations) that appear at each of the four corners of the stitch. A horizontal and a vertical stitch, place in the shape of an L around a cross stitch, are additional features of the stitch that aid in its recognition. The tight tension that is used causes the stitch to become raised, futher assisting in the identification of the stitch. Remember we are here to help you. All you have to do is ask. KNOWLEDGE!
