September of the Month Continues ~ Until October’s Announcement Next Issue

“May Health and Peace Attend your Days” from Milady’s Needle

Ever since Gloria first showed us this sampler, I have loved it … such a tender verse, so many wonderful motifs, like the castle, and the key to the castle, the stag, the peacocks, the fireflies … or bees … or whatever you wish them to be! Love the colorful border as well!

September is a month of many focuses, one of which is S.A.M.P.L.E.R.S! Of course, if you love samplers as much as I do, they’re always in your focus. For those of you on InstaGram, it’s #SeptemberSamplerSoiree and so our September SOM, this sweet, smallish sampler, is perfect in a month where our focus may be frequently diverted. The stitch count, 251 x 232, gives a finished size as follows: * on 40ct, 12.6 x 11.6 * on 46ct, 11.4 x 10.6 As Sampler of the Month, purchase a minimum of 2 “parts” of the kit and receive a 15% * on 56ct, 9.3 x 8.6 Sampler of the Month discount: I still need to do a Tudor/Soie * Chart $20 Surfine conversion. *AVAS Silks: Soie d’Alger $72.00 ~ Soie 100/3 $52.80 *Linen ~ The chart model is stitched on 40ct Weeks Parchment, beautiful color now available in Zweigart from Weeks in varying counts up through 56ct, and there are lots of other choicesThe as well, Attic, depending Mesa, onAZ your Toll-Free: preferred 1.888.94-ATTICcount. Gloria drew her inspiration for her 2018 Summer School project from this sweet sampler when she created this very charming snippet roll that she calls Sampler Memories Snippet Roll ~ Go to Pinterest and search for “snippet rolls” to see many other beautiful snippet rolls. As Gloria says on her blog, I chose to cross stitch my design and it is more orderly than most. That's just my slightly obsessive personality coming out in my art.

Friday, November 15, 9 - 4 with Merry Cox LE NOUVEAU PALAIS ROYAL The exquisite Palais Royal work boxes of yesteryear are highly sought after by collectors of today. The beautiful wooden boxes were fitted with highly crafted tools made from mother of pearl, ivory, gold or silver. Often a plain silk cushion or in rare instances, a beautiful silk cushion with , would be placed inside the box to protect the lovely tools. The tray holding the tools could be lifted out to reveal another space for treasures. My modern day version consists of a stitched cushion that when lifted out reveals a flat, silk tool holder tray for , thread winders and a ruler. When the tool tray is lifted out, there are stitched pincushions (one of each side) and a pin keep/needle flat. A lovely silk pouch for the work box completes the set.

There was a handwritten note on the back of one of the antique samplers: “Made by my grandmother’s best friend and presented to her when she left England to come to America in a sail boat in 1851. My grandmother – Ann (Handforth) Garlick. Given to me by my grandmother when I was 14 years old in 1908. (signed) Lillian Garlick. South Ashburnham. Massachusetts.” According to records online, Lillian Garlick (the granddaughter) was born on 4/23/1894 in Massachusetts.

The lovely, poignant friendship poem on each sampler tells us how very close their friendship was and how difficult parting was for both of them. Friendship Sampler I & Accessories

Merry has adapted the samplers and created accessories for each. Each sampler is finished with hemstitching. Friendship Sampler I has two accessory projects: First is a pin cushion with a wooden black base. When the actual pin cushion top is lifted off, it reveals two pockets that fan up, one holding scissors and the other holding needles. Second is a souvenir needlecase to commemorate a special trip or event with lots of stitching space for you to personalize. Merry designed her book to record her trip to Paris for her 70th birthday. Think of the endless possibilities for your special book. The little stitching companion doll inside has a pink striped dress and darling side curls. Merry named hers Camille. For a few hours Saturday afternoon, NeedleWorkPress invites you to step back in time to tour a replica nineteenth century Pennsylvania farmhouse in the Arizona desert. Thirty years ago this summer, Niles and Vickie Jennett built and moved into this unlikely dwelling, determined to create an oasis reminiscent of bygone days. Their well-lived-in and loved home contains a variety of needlework and veterinary treasures from the 1800’s. “We collect what we love,” agree Vickie and her daughter-in- law Maegan, who together blend their passion for history and needlework in the small business they run from home (Maegan and her family live just down the lane). “We tend to like simple folk art that draws us into the lives of makers who otherwise would have been forgotten.” They invite Symposium participants to enjoy viewing the many samplers, needlework smalls, and related ephemera that inspire their work. Every room in the house (yes, even the bathroom) has at least a sampler or two; some rooms have dozens. Maegan and Vickie are printing a special NeedleWorkPress surprise just for Symposium participants. Weather permitting, enjoy your box lunch in the garden. Here are the gorgeous Au Ver A’Soie silks laid out on a piece of the Weeks Straw called out in the model ~ it’s always interesting to see how differently colors photograph in different settings. It really is the same color! Sandra in Australia has reproduced the original sampler for one of her granddaughters using the colors found today on the front of Anna’s sampler. However, Sandra has also stitched a second version of Anna’s sampler for her other granddaughter. The two samplers are featured side by side in the centerfold of this booklet. The second version, although based on the first sampler, is an adaptation and uses a multitude of stitches: cross stitch over one and two linen threads, , Algerian eyelet stitch, French knots, rice stitch, stem stitch, leaf stitch, two- sided plaited Spanish stitch, needle weaving (horizontal running stitch over one thread), brick stitch, , long cross stitch, reverse , daisy stitch, back stitch, alternating half cross stitch over one thread of linen and straight . As Sandra plied her needle, she says she felt that Anna was beside her whispering suggestions for each motif. The booklet suggests that “If you listen carefully, Anna may whisper to you, too!” Sandra’s first model is on display at Sassy Jack’s, and her second version with the specialty stitches is currently being exhibited at The Attic. MARIA CERON, available in 5 parts, each $10.

This is the very beautiful MARIA CERON sampler, a reproduction from Lindsay Lane Designs that hasn’t gotten the press that it so deserves. It’s been out for several years, and I’m still plugging along on mine, above. And, below right, is Diane’s beautiful sampler. Diane started on the left with Part 5, which is perfect so that you can see another gorgeous part that I have to look forward to on the left side of mine.

AUNT HELEN’S SAMPLER $12, 164 x 160, is presented in two versions: One is a reproduction of the original German sampler from Breman, Germany. It was stitched by Helen Täger in 1898 on a 26ct linen with a red thread. The fabric was woven with the red threads along the top, bottom, and sides. The woven edge is only about 1/4-inch wider than the red stripes along the sides, and the sampler is hemstitched along the top and bottom. The second is an adaptation for you to stitch and personalize. Carolyn added period appropriate motifs and her name to the bottom section and a couple of small motifs to the alphabet section. Gary’s LADY LIBERTY by Blackbird Designs ~ Gary is one of 3 (Shelia and EJ are the other two) who you may know from Flosstube, and their Flosstube name is Sunshine Stitchers ~ you can find their latest video here

Gail is so enjoying stitching the beautiful Eliza Bell Cox Sampler from H a n d s Across the Sea Samplers. She said she thought she never wanted to stitch another sampler again … until she “met” the HATS sampler charts. She finds them so easy to stitch from and is loving her “return to samplers.” Yes, she did change the verses to something she preferred.

All of this from a woman who has taken a number of embroidery classes in A u s t r a l i a a n d w h o s e embroidery skills are surpassed by few.

Witness the handbag to the left, front and back, that she embroidered. Beautiful!

Left, Jan’s CLASSIC RED 2 from W e r k s t a t t f u r H i s t o r i s c h e Stickmuster ~ this is stunning! Jan used Picture This Plus Lupine, and she says the primary thread used was Gloriana’s Cafe au Lait. So much more compelling to want to stitch it when it’s presented in linen and silks as opposed to the starkness of the chart.

Jan’s framed needleart, right, she drew from the chart on the left, DIE FARBEN VENEDIGS by W e r k s t a t t f ü r historische Stickmuster ~ truly, Jan created a beautiful piece of art by selecting 3 of her favorites from the chart and positioning t h e m a s s h e d i d . Absolutely stunning!

I was asked if I would be willing to host another Silent Auction for Breast Cancer Research, but rather, I agreed to exhibit this treasured tree and conduct a drawing, with all proceeds to benefit the organization of my choice. I selected the BCRF (Breast Cancer Research Foundation), where our silent auction donations have gone for almost two decades. Two very kind and generous friends who wish to remain anonymous and who love to bead created this stunning set of beaded ornaments designed by Cindy Hambrick, whose designs are available through EGA guilds and seminars, as I understand it. The ornaments decorate a lighted tree and all will go to a lucky winner. Stash Sisters . . . starring our own Carolyn of The Attic staff! Well, unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past year or more, you will have heard about Flosstube on the You Tube Channel, and many of you have “met” Carolyn there and recognize her voice when you call the shop and she answers. But just in case you’ve missed it, here’s a link to her latest video. I know you will enjoy stitching with Carolyn as she shares her current projects in her tiara with her princess floss!

And there are other Flosstube channels I know you will enjoy as well. Many of them are very entertaining and great company while you stitch. One of my favorites is Saltbox Stitcher ~ Carol stitches what we love, samplers! We had the pleasure of meeting her at our Summer School this past August.

And an upstart channel, only a month old, that already has a huge number of subscribers is Brenda and the Serial Starter ~ if you’ve been to Attic Summer School and other Attic events, you’ve met these fun-loving ladies from the Chicago area, Brenda and Laura, and their love of samplers equals ours!

The autumnal equinox was earlier this week, and while the colors of autumn are yet to show us their glory in Arizona, there is just a hint of it in this grove of aspen trees that we saw a few weeks ago near Flagstaff.

This is Hart Prairie Road, one of the most beautiful drives in northern Arizona, especially in a week or two. We were just a wee bit early for the beautiful aspen trees to show their glory.

And just a few days after we were there the family who lives just Granddaughter Hannah and Avery both attend NAU in across the road from our property texted us this photo ~ the first Flagstaff, and fortunately for us, they had a few hours of dusting of snow on the majestic San Francisco Peaks. freeThe time Attic, away from Mesa, their AZ homework Toll-Free: to join 1.888.94-ATTIC us for dinner.
