  • Venturing in the Slipstream
VENTURING IN THE SLIPSTREAM THE PLACES OF VAN MORRISON’S SONGWRITING Geoff Munns BA, MLitt, MEd (hons), PhD (University of New England) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Western Sydney University, October 2019. Statement of Authentication The work presented in this thesis is, to the best of my knowledge and belief, original except as acknowledged in the text. I hereby declare that I have not submitted this material, either in full or in part, for a degree at this or any other institution. .............................................................. Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

WHITE-KNUCKLE ZEN A Thesis Presented to the Graduate Faculty of California State University, Hayward In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in English By Jeffrey J. Syrop November, 1993 WHITE-KNUCKLE ZEN By Jeffrey J. Syrop Date: ii CONTENTS Mellow Maui 1 Three Fathers 84 One Mother 110 iii MELLOW MAUl Most of the waitresses at Maui's Hyatt Regency Pavilion restaurant couldn't see me, the new waiter; I was invisible to them. Mavis, the lovely hostess, could see me, but Kevin told me not to get too close to her, because she was local. Kevin was a handsome local waiter who talked like a haole, from doing a long stint in the military. He took it upon himself to be my advisor. But he couldn't help me with women, because he couldn't get any women, either. My problem at work was that I was too philosophical. I was always thinking about nuclear weapons and toxic waste, while my coworkers thought about sports cars, cocaine, surfing Maui's wonderful waves, and sex. When I'd pick up an order from the cooks, I might ask them: "Do you think there will always be war?" While passing a busy waitress, I might drop the question: "Is it right to let people in poor countries starve to death to stabilize the world's population?" I would ask my manager: "Is enlightenment possible for everyone?" 1 2 Sometimes, in a lighter vein, I'd ask all the waiters, waitresses, cooks, and the hostess to decide which character on Gilligan's Island they were.

PERFORMERS Right out of the box, the band Chicagomarched to a different drummer. BY ROB BOWMAN hicago stands as one of America’s most successful rock bands of any epoch in terms of both sales and longevity. The statistics are simply staggering: Over a forty-six-year recording career,C the band has issued thirty-six albums, sold well over a hundred million records, and released twenty Top Ten pop and twenty-two Top Ten adult contempo- rary singles (fifteen of which broke the Top Ten on both charts). It achieved the enviable feat of placing these hits on the Billboard charts in five different decades. Seventeen of its first twenty albums were certified plat- inum, nine of those multiplatinum, and Chicago 17 hit platinum a whopping six times. Starting out in the late 1960s as a horn-dominated underground rock band verging on the avant garde in its use of dissonance, jazz voicings, and extended compositions, Chicago initially seemed to have little if any chance of AM radio success. Yet, one would mistake them for being underground or avant within a year, the group had three Top Ten singles (“Make garde. Under producer David Foster’s tutelage, the band Me Smile,” “25 or 6 to 4,” and “Does Anybody Really Know had morphed into a mainstream pop group fronted by What Time It Is”), and were selling out arenas from coast bassist Peter Cetera, who seemed able to effortlessly craft to coast.
