Candlemas Sunday falls on 31 January this year, so probably be the time you read this it will be over and gone. Then, because Easter is quite late this year, we have an interlude of ordinary ‘green’ Sundays before Lent begins on 1 March. In the days of the Prayers Book Calendar we had the three ‘Gesimas’ before Lent, Septuagesima, Sexagesima and Quinquagesima, which counted us down to Lent and reminded us to make our preparations. Now we have the much less excitingly named ‘Sundays before Lent’. Perhaps you might to use February to pre-plan Lent, then when it comes upon us suddenly on 1st March, you will be geared up and ready. Some people give something up, some take something up, some do both. In the introduction to the Ash Wednesday service the Celebrant says I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy word. That gives us three options: more focus upon and attention to prayer—we can, I am sure, all do with that; giving things up, not just so we might feel a righteous sense of achievement, but so we might make more space for God; reading the Bible and studying it with others. As you think about what your Lenten Discipline, think about what will help you, in this season, to simplify your life and make more time and space for God. Holy Communion on Ash Wednesday will be at Huntley at 7:00 p.m. Details of this year’s Lent Study Course will be on the Notice Sheet in due course. A friend in Monmouthshire recently sent me a photo of the glorious snowdrops in his garden. I am now eagerly awaiting my own, which seem to be very behind those Welsh ones. The carpet of snowdrops in Ploddy Wood on the road to Newent always seem to be the first round here, but, as yet, there is no sign there. They shouldn’t be long now, and they always, for me, mark the fact that Spring is not far off. All my own snowdrops are gifts from parishioners after I put out a plea in my first year. Like all plant gifts they always have something special about them, as I remember the donors as well as enjoying the flowers.

Mesopotamia was the name of the land now in the troubled Middle East; mostly Iraq, and parts of Kuwait, Syria, Turkey, and the Iran-Iraq border. Before the Great War it was part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire who had for many years been courted as an ally by Germany. It is mostly flat desert and floods to a great extent when the mountain snows thaw. In 1914 there were no roads, transport was along the river system, and towns were constructed along the river banks. Baghdad, 570 miles inland, was the major centre of population. The prize in this hostile land was oil, needed by the Royal Navy especially, and always considered worth fighting for. David Lloyd George and Churchill also believed it may have been a less costly path towards defeating the enemy. The Turks unsurprisingly strongly resisted any British incursion. In 1916 there had been an enormous blow to British prestige when the allied garrison at Kut-al-Amara were besieged for four months and eventually were forced to surrender to the Turkish Army. Early in 1917 a new Commander, Major-General Stanley Maude, introduced new tactics utilising railways and aerial reconnaissance to a greater degree. He set about renewing the advance, recapturing Kut on 24th February and pushing on to Baghdad which fell on 11th March. These events far from home had devastating effects for the families of Leonard Hawkins and Russell Harper, both men dying in Mesopotamia February 1917. They had both joined the 7th Battalion of the Regiment early in 1916. Leonard’s family farmed at Hopebrook Farm, Longhope, and in 1911 the 17 year old Leonard had been living and working there with his parents and two younger sisters Dorothy and Evelyn. Russell at the same time, age 15, was with his parents and family of a further six children, at Hollybush Farm. High casualty rates in Mesopotamia included those who succumbed to sickness and death due to disease in the appalling condition; heatstroke, malaria, dysentery were rampant where there was a lack of fresh water. Wounded men could spend two weeks at sea before reaching a hospital. However, the records state both Leonard and Russell were killed in action, Leonard on 10th February and Russell on 25th February. Russell has no known grave and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial in Iraq, moved away from the original position in 1997, by presidential decree, because of the sensitivity of the site. Leonard was buried in Amara War Cemetery, sadly desecrated over the intervening years. No commemorations take place at either of these Commonwealth War Grave sites, no poppies are laid or prayers offered. But we will remember these two men at least in Longhope. On the centenary of their deaths there will be a short commemorative service in All Saints Church at 10am. Everyone is welcome.

~ ~ ~ Romance Every Valentine’s Day our local newspaper has a section for romantic messages. Last year my roommate surprised his girlfriend with roses and dinner at a fancy restaurant. When they returned from their date, she leafed through the paper to see if he had written a note to her. Near the bottom of one page she found:“ Bonnie—What are you looking here for? Aren’t dinner and flowers enough? Love, Scott.” ~ ~ ~ I sat next to a lady on my last flight. Ever the charmer, I asked, “Does the airline charge you extra for sitting next to good-looking men?” “Yes,” she said, “but I wasn’t willing to pay.” ~ ~ ~

Rudford Highleadon and Churcham W.I. Members would like to thank Tibberton and Taynton W.I. for a lovely Christmas meeting. We did enjoy “The Singing Vicar and God’s Grampies” , although one lady thought she heard them announced as “The Singing Vicar and God’s Grumpies” . Our thoughts were definitely festive as we joined in with some of the carols and Norm’s jokes were well received. Just as a taster: Two brothers had written their Christmas lists, the younger then started to read out his list very loudly. His elder brother said “You don’t need to shout, Santa isn’t deaf.” “No”, said his younger brother, “ but Grandma is!” Mulled wine, mince pies and the Festive Quiz all added to the Christmas feel . February 4th and 5th is the first of Colesbourne Park’s Snowdrop weekends and the Gloucestershire Federation of WI’s are doing the teas to raise money for Denman College. With over 300 different varieties of snowdrops to see it is well worth a visit. Our next meeting is on Wednesday, February 22nd 2017 at Rudford and Highleadon Village Hall at 7.30pm when we will be meeting our Village Agent . Visitors are always welcome.

Longhope Parish Council

The Neighbourhood Development Plan for the parish is nearing its submission prior to external examination and the subsequent local referendum. There have been some delays while the steering group consider the effect of changes to the District Council’s Allocations Plan, but an independent check on the draft document has been positive.

Highways issues continue to be controversial, both in terms of road maintenance and around plans for traffic management on the A4136. County Highways have carried out several pieces of work recently, and the parish council is keeping in close touch with them about future improvements.

th The next parish council meeting will be on Monday 20 February.

Longhope Family Service

Our December Family Service was extended to include four workshops on the theme of the visit of the Angel Gabriel to Mary. It was attended by twenty children plus adults. Helen's craftwork group produced beautiful angels and Carryl's group decorated an assortment of biscuits. Margaret's music workshop saw children learning some new songs and Clive's story time group explored the story of Gabriel's visit to Mary using crib figures. Many thanks are due to all who took part and for those who provided refreshments. Our January Family Service explored the theme of Epiphany aided by three advent kings, James, Thomas and Tim who played their roles with great style with the help of Sammy the seagull who often flies in to help us. We examined pieces frankincense and we had real myrrh on display. Our next Family Service is at 9-30am on Sunday 12th February when our theme will be Living Water. In March we are moving the Family Service to the 4th Sunday of the month (March 26th) so that we can celebrate Mothering Sunday. We hope that many families will want to join us for this special event. Clive Edmonds

Longhope WI The New Year started with a trip to see Jack and the Beanstalk at the Everyman. A very enjoyable afternoon was had by all. The walking group ventured forth with the first walk of the year through the woods to stopping for coffee at Hilary Hawker’s then onto the Red Hart for lunch. The return journey followed the brook and for many, an unknown area of our village. The walk next month on 2nd February will start at Barn Farm. The Craft Group met on the 21st January and was introduced to embroidered pictures with Celia Stringfellow, sharing her skill and knowledge. They are looking forward to visiting Rags to Roses on February 11th. This is a charity ‘Aladdin’s cave’ for Crafters with materials, wools and various other treasures. Despite the inclement weather and illness 35 hardy members attended our January meeting. Jo announced that she and Heather Ingram had set up a Longhope W.I Facebook page. Please have a look. The information and voting sheets for the annual resolutions were handed out and as always some very interesting topics for us decide upon. The events coming up this year are outings to the theatre, a trip to the Malvern Spring show and many more. The Winter Warmer lunch is planned for February 22nd at the Glass House. Following last year’s success another village litter pick will take place March 11th. Our speaker was Chris O’Grady and he proceeded to keep us enthralled with tales of his walk from Pershore to Rome. He made the decision to take four months off work and undertake the journey of 1200 miles as he approached his fiftieth birthday. Planning completed, he wrote to the Vatican about his journey and eventually received a fax back granting him a general audience with the Pope. He had little money and although he had some accommodation planned and a tent, his journey mainly consisted of knocking on doors and asking for a bed for the night. His many adventures illustrated with photos of people, places and anecdotes were fascinating. The kindness and generosity of the people he met was humbling. Would we open our doors to complete strangers? Our next meeting is February 9th and the speaker is Sandra Ashenford on Objects of Interest. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Please contact Jo Phelps if you wish to attend.

Zion Christian Fellowship, Hopes Hill, Longhope. www.longhopebaptist.org.uk

When Mother Teresa addressed world leaders at the United Nations, she was asked, "How can we have world peace?" She replied "Go home and love your family." That was good advice, for love should be the keynote of every family! A counsellor once asked a class of 10 to 11 year old children to complete a series of sentences that began with the phrase, "I wish....." She expected them to write about toys, bicycles and trips to theme parks etc. Instead twenty out of the thirty children made reference to the breakup of their families or conflict at home. "I wish my parents wouldn't fight." "I wish my father would come back." "I wish I could get all A's so my dad would love me." "I wish my mother didn't have a boyfriend." "I wish I had one mum and one dad, so the kids wouldn't make fun of me. I've got three mums and three dads, and they botch up my life." It's hardly front page news that the family is in trouble today, and the children are caught-up in this kind of family instability. Many will carry their problems on into their own future relationships. There is, however, an answer for problems like these. For those people,- children and adults, -there is healing and acceptance to be found in Christ. He can bring physical and emotional healing to those who will come to Him. There is another area of healing even more important, and that is spiritual healing. He wants to bring forgiveness and new life in place of the hurts, the bad memories, the sin and sadness of the past. In short, He wants to give new life and new purpose in life! In Zion we aim to be a family, to help, love and encourage one another. It may be you would like to come in to our Coffee Morning one Monday for a chat and for someone to pray with you. The Lord Jesus wants to bless and to help you!

A Real Gem On hearing the word ‘treasure’ we may think of buried treasure – of ancient chests brimming over with coins! (Or, if not so romantically inclined, then treasure which has a monetary value.) But this is only the world’s view. With God it is different. His is real treasure, which can be found in the most unexpected places. Two weeks before Christmas we were walking down a back street in our local town, when we had a lovely surprise. In the window of a small, quaint, unobtrusive-looking shop was a beautiful crib scene, filling the window! The shop had a faded sign above the door, and inside we glimpsed a small basic workroom, just big enough for the two men who were intent on restoring furniture. The shop had an almost Dickensian air about it, in fact very fitting for the celebration of the birth of our Creator, who humbled himself to come amongst us in the lowliest of ways – laid in an animals’ feeding trough in a stable – just to show us how much he loves us! We entered the tiny shop and showed appreciation to the owners for their recognition of the real point of Christmas. Amongst the commercialism and the ‘crazy money’ spent at this time of year, it seemed a world apart and was truly refreshing. A real gem. Let us be aware and open our eyes each day to all God has to show us – for there will be other hidden gems too when we least expect it. This is treasure indeed!

~ ~ ~ A husband and wife had been married for 60 years and had no secrets except for one: The woman kept in her closet a shoe box that she forbade her husband from ever opening. But when she was on her deathbed—and with her blessing—he opened the box and found a crocheted doll and £95,000 in cash. “My mother told me that the secret to a happy marriage was to never argue,” she explained. “Instead, I should keep quiet and crochet a doll.” Her husband was touched. Only one doll was in the box—that meant she’d been angry with him only once in 60 years. “But what about all this money?” he asked. “Oh,” she said, “that’s the money I made from selling the rest of the dolls.” ~ ~ ~

Whalebone Music

On Friday 22nd March at 7.30 p.m. we are delighted to welcome Whalebone to May Hill Village Hall. Whalebone are quite simply... a joy! Steve Downs, Charlotte Watson with their acoustic guitars and Sarah Ibberson’s fiddle create music from every genre that will touch every part of your soul. ''Difference personified, eclecticism defined..”

Whalebone deliver music that’s sensitively serious, delicately defined, cleverly constructed and utterly original. The blend is marvellously mixed ... rock touching folk, classical caressing tradition, innovation dancing with legacy ... an amalgam of alchemy... Whalebone is the creation of three musicians, who through hybrid musical journeys reached a place where individual paths of musical expression coalesce to engender a creature of unique pedigree...aurally mouth-watering.'

For tickets at £10.00 each tel: 01452 830350/830454 or email: [email protected] Listen to the new album here - http://www.whalebone-music.com/mirabilia 27 News From Your Village Agents

Hello everyone!! I have recently spent a bit of time at one of our amazing services right on our doorstep, and wanted to remind you all about it, and to pass on some pleas too. The facility that I am talking about is Sheppard House, also known as Newent Association for the Disabled. It is a day centre where people of all ages can go and take part in a wide range of activities, use the therapeutic facilities on offer, and be well looked after, fed and cared for from 10am to 3.30pm up to five days per week.

Sheppard House is situated at the top of Gloucester Road, and off Onslow Road, the building offers a safe environment, purpose built for people of restricted mobility. In addition to‘ Sheppard House’ itself, The Community Transport Service and Dial A Ride service is run from Sheppard House. There is also a Charity Shop situated in Newent Town Centre. The service to clients is at a competitive and reasonable price, and this is only achieved by voluntary contributions, profits from the Charity Shop, and by the volunteers themselves who give so much time and effort in so many ways. Without their efforts, Sheppard House would be unable to function. If you would like to join them for a taster session, and go and see for yourself what they can offer, Please call 01531 821227 or visit www.sheppardhouse.co.uk I have recently had the chance to experience the “Men's Club” for a session, which is run on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Some of the members told me about what they get up to. They often chat over drinks and biscuits and have a lot of laughs, not to mention the crafting, projects, quizzes, and trips out etc. I did however promise to keep some secrets so if you are a man and fancy the Club, I am sure they will share their experiences in a taster session!! During the Spring and the Summer Months, the members enjoy getting out in the Fresh Air, and using the gardens at Sheppard House. They like to grow a wide variety of flowers and plants, and as such would always welcome donations of seeds and seedlings. If you would like to donate to these budding gardeners, please get in touch with Sheppard House. Monetary donations are always welcome for much needed trips out for all residents, not only the men's club, and Crafting is always on the Agenda, so if you don't know what to do with used greetings cards, or left over glitter from Christmas, I am sure Sheppard House can find a use for it!

For more information contact Sheppard House on the details above.

When I met and married my husband (back in the Dark Ages) I was surprised to learn that he loved butter beans. Of course, back then, you had to soak them all night and cook them for what seemed like hours. Thankfully things have changed but when did you last see a recipe containing butter beans? Hopefully, you will enjoy the following: Rob’s Sweet Butter Bean Bake Shred and wash half a white Sweetheart Cabbage (or similar) and cook in just enough water to cover for 5 minutes. Drain. Meanwhile soften a peeled and chopped Red Onion in a little Oil. Peel, core and large chop a medium to large Pear (not too ripe). Mix all the above together and add: a little Black Pepper; One tablespoon Sweet Spiced Mango Chutney Caution! Some Mango Chutneys are very hot! I used Asda Extra Special Mango, Apple and Ginger Sweet Chutney. A tin of drained and rinsedButter Beans In Water, one large tablespoon of Pine Kernels. Mix everything well and place in a greased dish. Topping: Three Sweet Potatoes, peeled, cubed and cooked in water until soft. (Do not leave in the air as they will go brown quickly like apples). Mash and add a little Dairy Free Spread and/or Soya milk if needed. You may not need any.

I love this dish as I make it in advance and either heat it later in the day for 30mins at 180c/350f/gas 4 or cover and refrigerate for the next day. If cooked from cold, allow longer to heat through.

Do you have a working Smoke Alarm?

Two in three people who died in domestic fires had a smoke alarm...... but it didn't work! Help us to help you stay safe. Working Smoke alarms save lives. They are widely available from DIY, hardware and electrical shops and some supermarkets, and are easily fitted. Everyone can benefit from properly fitted and maintained smoke alarms. They can give you valuable seconds in which to escape from a fire at home. They can literally mean the difference between life and death. Have at least one smoke alarm on each level of your home. These need to be in the hallways as they are your escape routes. Smoke alarms are available that have been adapted to suit the needs of people with a hearing impairment. For more information, contact the Community Safety Team at [email protected] or telephone 01452 888777 Whether your smoke alarms are mains or battery powered; for them to look after you, you have to look after them: Test your smoke alarms every week by pressing the test button until the alarm sounds. If it doesn't sound, check the battery or replace the alarm. Clean your smoke alarms every six months to remove any dust and fluff from the detector. Change your batteries every year on a date that you can remember easily, like your birthday. Or fit smoke alarms with a 10 year battery in them. Change your smoke alarms every 10 years. Like most electrical goods they can stop working at some point, it is better to change them before they stop working

If you would like smoke alarms fitted in your home but you cannot do the work yourself, a free service exists which will install them for you. Please call 0800 180 41 40 to arrange your FREE Home Fire Safety Check. The staff will also install FREE smoke alarms where necessary. If you don't think you require this service consider if you know anyone who would. Let them know about this important service particularly if they have anyone in their homes that are very young or elderly.

Check your smoke alarm every week. Push the button, not your luck
