For the rest of you I hope you have all calmed down a little now that you have had a month to get used to the upheaval to normal daily life that the increase in postage stamps seems to have caused. We shall all have to accept this seismic change and, to use the current vernacular, “Get Over It!” Comparisons, of course, are odious but this will not stop me fouling the atmosphere with the fact that sending a postcard to your Auntie in the Orkneys, a thousand miles away, involving copious pieces of ridiculously expensive equipment, numerous vehicles with either eight, four or two wheels and in all probability one with a rudder, and the hands of at least a dozen humanoids is five times, I’ll say that again in big letters, FIVE TIMES! less expensive than a cold cappuccino in Cheltenham Spa. Now I know it’s a large hike and if the extra dosh generated was all going into a large pot marked ‘for the exclusive benefit of subpostmasters’ I might feel just a tiny twinge of empathy. No make that a big twinge. But there are reasons for the increase which I shall rehearse below briefly and then duck down while you hurl abuse at the offending paragraph. Right two things; one, the price of stampage should have gone up more over the years but didn’t because ‘they’ (offpost, offcom, offhead, whatever) wouldn’t let ‘us’ (Her Majesty’s retailers). The cost of stamps, therefore, was kept artificially lower than the actual cost needed to run a profitable business. And two, the Royal Mail (please look away now Mrs K) is to be privatised probably around twenty fourteen, that’s the year and not just after eight o’clock, and no-one will want to buy it unless they can see their way to making a few bob. 7 O.K. now that you having finished ranting I shall lead you gently through the golden meadow that is the pricing structure of our new improved rates so that you will not be embarrassed when negotiating your next postal transaction.
