Then, because Easter is quite late this year, we have an interlude of ordinary ‘green’ Sundays before Lent begins on 1 March. In the days of the Prayers Book Calendar we had the three ‘Gesimas’ before Lent, Septuagesima, Sexagesima and Quinquagesima, which counted us down to Lent and reminded us to make our preparations. Now we have the much less excitingly named ‘Sundays before Lent’. Perhaps you might to use February to pre-plan Lent, then when it comes upon us suddenly on 1st March, you will be geared up and ready. Some people give something up, some take something up, some do both. In the introduction to the Ash Wednesday service the Celebrant says I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy word. That gives us three options: more focus upon and attention to prayer—we can, I am sure, all do with that; giving things up, not just so we might feel a righteous sense of achievement, but so we might make more space for God; reading the Bible and studying it with others. As you think about what your Lenten Discipline, think about what will help you, in this season, to simplify your life and make more time and space for God. Holy Communion on Ash Wednesday will be at Huntley at 7:00 p.m. Details of this year’s Lent Study Course will be on the Notice Sheet in due course. A friend in Monmouthshire recently sent me a photo of the glorious snowdrops in his garden. I am now eagerly awaiting my own, which seem to be very behind those Welsh ones. The carpet of snowdrops in Ploddy Wood on the road to Newent always seem to be the first round here, but, as yet, there is no sign there. They shouldn’t be long now, and they always, for me, mark the fact that Spring is not far off. All my own snowdrops are gifts from parishioners after I put out a plea in my first year. Like all plant gifts they always have something special about them, as I remember the donors as well as enjoying the flowers. 5 Forest Edge Group of Churches—Services for February/ March 2017 [See page 8 for readings] Date Bulley Churcham Huntley Longhope May Hill 5 February 11am 11am 9.30am 9.30am 4th Sunday Morning Worship Holy Holy Morning before Lent at Churcham Communion Communion Worship Green MR CS/SF CS MR 12 February 11am 9.30am 9.30am 9.30am 3rd Sunday Holy Holy 6pm Holy Family Service before Lent Communion Communion Evensong Communion CE Green CS CS JC 19 February 10am 11am 9.30am 9.30am 2nd Sunday 11am Family Holy Holy Morning before Lent Morning Service Communion Communion Worship Green Worship BH RS CS/MR CS/BH MR 26 February 9.30am 9.30am 11am 11am 9.30am Sunday next Holy Morning Holy Morning Morning before Lent Communion Worship Communion Worship Worship Green CS/MR BH CS/BH MR JC 5 March 11am 9.30am 9.30am 11am 1st Sunday of Holy Holy Morning Morning Worship at Bulley Lent Communion Communion Worship MR Purple CS/BF CS MR 6 Baptismal Birthdays Churcham And Bulley Huntley Longhope ~ Jack Henry Matthews ~ Bethany May Lancett The Roll of Honour!
