Metaphorical Illness in Hemingway's Works Abstract Hemingway, through his characters, illustrates the many different genres and functions of disease. More than just inflictors of sadness and pain, disease and injury are part of the human condition. They are undeniable truths that give life to humanity, Hemingway’s characters, and Hemingway himself. As Hemingway writes in Death in the Afternoon, “…all stories, if continued far enough, end in death, and he is no true storyteller who would keep that from you.” Part of Hemingway’s art is acknowledging that there is no true cure. Vitality and death, contentedness and pain, disease and survival all coexist in Hemingway’s writing as one: life. FATHERS AND SONS IN THE FICTION OF ERNEST HEMINGWAY by ROBERT CHARLES CLARK (Under the Direction of James Nagel) ABSTRACT This thesis will show that Ernest Hemingway’s fictional portrayal of fathers and sons is complex and multi-layered. It is an argument against a critical tradition that has largely misread Hemingway’s writing about the paternal role. In the course of my essay, I provide close readings of seven short stories, “Indian Camp,” “Ten Indians,” “The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife,” “Cross-Country Snow,” “Fathers and Sons,” “Great News from the Mainland,” “I Guess Everything Reminds You of Something,” and one novel, Islands in the Stream. Stoker All rights reserved ii Abstract of Thesis Hemingway’s Mythical Method: Implications of Dante Allusion in In Our Time The widely accepted assessment of Ernest Hemingway’s In Our Time is that the text’s fragmentary form belies a complex but cohesive narrative wholeness. Missing from the critical record, however, is an adequate account of In Our Time’s use of what T.S. Eliot termed “the mythical method.” Using a palimpsestic system of indirect allusion, Hemingway’s fragmentary novel constructs an overarching pattern of reference to the journey of Dante’s pilgrim through Hell and Purgatory in the Divine Comedy. Hemingway’s use of this mythical method not only provides his novel a more concrete narrative framing device than its critics have recognized, but also reflects new dimensions of the influence Dante, Eliot, and Ezra Pound exerted on Hemingway’s earliest work. In particular, similarities between In Our Time and Pound’s Draft of XVI Cantos (both published in 1925), combined with Pound’s well-documented mentorship of Hemingway, suggest Pound may have been a primary source of influence on Hemingway’s apprehension of and engagement with Dante and the epic tradition he represents. -

Most of the short stories follow Nick Adams in his growth towards adulthood and manhood, while other stories and vignettes in this collection relate the need of other characters for a guide through life’s challenges. Given the “coming-of-age” nature of this collection, it is essential to focus on the guides of each story, particularly the character who fills such a role and where the guide is ultimately leading. The first short story of the collection, “Indian Camp,” sets the stage for the rest of the collection. In this story, Nick Adams and his father, the Doctor, accompany Uncle George and two Indians to a nearby camp so that the doctor may facilitate the delivery of an Indian woman’s baby. Through Hemingway’s careful and subtle clues, the reader comes to see Uncle George as the most important guide of all: a father. However, it is the final scene of “Indian Camp” which really sets everything in motion. In this scene Nick Adams -

ANALYSIS In Our Time (1925) Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) “In Our Time, 15 short stories by Hemingway with vignettes serving as interchapters, published in the U.S. in 1925. in our time (Paris, 1924) contains only the vignettes. Most stories treat life in the Middle West, but the interpolated sketches describe war in Europe and bullfights. ‘Indian Camp,’ ‘The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife, ‘The Three-Day Blow,’ and others tell of the boyhood experiences of Nick, the author’s counterpart, who grew up in the Great Lakes region, learning the bitter as well as the beautiful facts of existence through the work of his father, a physician, and through his association with Indian guides and their families. Such stories as ‘Mr. and Mrs. Elliot,’ ‘Out of Season,’ and ‘Cross Country Snow’ are brief, poignant tales of American expatriates in Europe and their complex loves and friendships. ‘My Old Man’ is the story of a boy’s loyalty to his father, an American jockey forced to work in Europe because of unsportsmanlike conduct at home, and of the boy’s disillusion following his father’s death. The author’s enthusiasm for sport and the American wilderness is shown in ‘Big Two-Hearted River,’ an account of a trout-fishing expedition.” James D.
