Summary The Old Salem Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1966/1978 based on the “Old and Historic Salem District” created in 1948 by a City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County Zoning Ordinance.1 The original NHL encompassed approximately 62 acres with a period of significance from 1766 to 1856.2 Further understanding of significance in the intervening years led to re-examination, and the revised and expanded Old Salem Historic District NHL encompasses 193 acres and two periods of significance: Town of Salem 1766-1913 (founding to consolidation with neighboring Winston), which includes Moravian Architecture 1766-1856, and the Old Salem period 1948-2010 (historic preservation in the vanguard). The Old Salem Historic District NHL includes planned, articulated, and restored landscape that records the dynamic story of the Moravians in Piedmont North Carolina during the life of the town of Salem, and the local community efforts to preserve and restore that experience through Old Salem, Inc. at the forefront of historic preservation in America. Salem was established in 1766 as the central town of the Wachovia Tract, a 100,000 acre tract of Moravian land encompassing the drainage basin of Muddy Creek, a tributary of the Yadkin River, and 240 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Salem’s story includes the founding of Winston and the ultimate consolidation with that neighbor as Winston-Salem in 1913. People of European and African descent built Salem through time. Their relationship to each other, which began as an anomaly in the South, was to test the human conscience and make its mark on the landscape. Enduring as legacy are sacred places, open spaces, creeks, roadways and paths, fence lines, houses, gardens, a college, places of business, native trees and shrubs. Descendants of early populations are legacy as well. The Salem Historic District is a place of material wealth in the retention and restoration of historic fabric in its buildings, structures, objects, landscape, and archaeological resources, and as such, it is also a container of memory. Salem’s design on the landscape reflects the opportunities and constraints of the environment as addressed by Moravian planners in the 1760s. Global experience in community enterprise brought forth a town plan organized around a central grid anchored to a town square that was laid out on a ridge above a broad creek bottom in a rolling landscape. Natural resources of Carolina red clay, varieties of stone, forests, and plentiful water supply provided the materials for construction of fine and enduring buildings and structures with skillful hands and in remembered European traditions. The plan set in place was then naturally and sustainably expandable, and with an educated and committed population, and guided by a central authority (theocratic government followed by municipal government), the town grew in an orderly manner and steadily, from a backcountry craft and trade center to an industrial city, all the while in the presence of a strong religious context. The physical appearance in form and presence endures today with a high degree of integrity in the Old Salem Historic District NHL. The durability of design and architectural fabric speak to the quality of the built environment and the care taken by the community. Preservation parameters of scholarship and integrity have guided restoration efforts by the museum. Gross Ill he purpose of this article is to examine and document a phenomenon which has only recently been given any auention: the use of the natural, or baroque, Ttrumpet by the Unitas Fratrum, or Moravian church in Germany and its subsequentemployment on the North American continent during theeighteenth century. While there is evidence that trumpets were played in many locations throughout the American colonies,' the scope of this article is very specific; it deals only with how the Moravian church, a group of immigrants seeking religious freedom and the opportunity to minister to those in the New World, came to employ trumpets in their religious communities and worship practices. First, however, it will be necessary to define some of the Moravian religious practices and terminology before proceeding. These customs either involved music, or had a profound influence on the development of the church's musical traditions. Many of the rituals of the Moravian church were attempts to return to the Christianity of the New Testament. A group of young believers in Herrnhut, Saxony, in 1732decided to hold an Easter service consisting of hymns of praise at the church's burial site early on aster m~rning.~ This simple service was very effective, and soon was made a custom in the Moravian church. Instrumental accompaniment was added shortly afterward, and today the massed instrumentalists and singing congregation at a Moravian Easter service are impressive indeed. The place where these services were held was known simply as "God's Acre." This was the Moravians' term for the plot of land where the bodies of believers were buried, or "planted" to await the "first fruits" of the ~esumction.~It was the firm belief in the Resurrection and eternal life that shaped all of thecustoms having to do with God's Acre, the early Easter service, and the use of funeral chorales.

    A Memorabilia of 2003 Viewed in hindsight, almost any year looks worn and tattered, and 2003 is no exception. Yet despite the tatters, 2003 saw much activity and upbuilding in the Southern Province as well as ample cause for celebration and thanksgiving. A request for a brief summary of activities brought forth a tremendous response from Provincial agencies. The poor economy gave much work to the Sunnyside Ministry. Br. Roma Combs reported, “The needs of the desperate families we see are relentlessly and ruthlessly sustained by hunger, sickness and hopelessness resulting in poverty above description. Expenditures will approach $677,000 for 4,500 requests for service. We have done what we can to assist in the name of Christ in honor of the caring community of all those who have supported this ministry of graceful love for all God’s magnificent creation.” “The Mission Society continued its primary work of fulfilling the Great Commission both at home and abroad,” reported Br. Jack Geis. “We were pleased to be able to provide cross-cultural training and financial support for 57 high school and college students in our Young Partners in Mission Program this past Summer, and to assist, in similar fashion, 32 adults in Short Term Missions. We have maintained our support for 13 full-time missionaries, some with families, operating under various sending agencies such as Campus Crusade for Christ, Youth With a Mission(YWAM), Overseas Mission Fellowship (OMF), Wycliffe, Wings of Mercy, Samaritan's Purse, and others. “Our Mission Residence, consisting of two apartments on Main Street in Old Salem, provided accommodation for 41 visiting guests, for a total of 573 days.

In at least one instance, however, good faith de- mands that the debt be assumed. The study of Abraham Reincke Beck and the edition of selected letters would never have materialized had it not been for the kindness of George Swan of Lititz, Pennsylvania, who brought Beck's Letter Book to the author's attention and granted permis- sion to publish a portion of it. Part I. A Portrait of a Schoolmaster On June 25, 1895, Abraham Reincke Beck, the highly respected school- master of Lititz, Pennsylvania, wrote a letter to his nephew James Mont- gomery Beck announcing his intention of closing the Beck Family School for boys. "The final closing of my school," wrote Beck. had been in consideration by us ever since Xmas, and with the end of the term we came to the conclusion that forty years' work was about enough, especially as Paul did not wish to succeed me. Had he done so, it would have given me much pleasure to teach for him because, so far, I have lost little, if any power in that direction, the heavy responsibility of taking entire charge of other people's children being the only thing we were beginning to tire of.' Beck's retirement from the teaching profession and the closing of the school marked the passing of an institution which had been the pride of the com- munity for thirty years.

ROBERTSON Master of Arts in History University of Richmond 2009 Dr. Robert C. Kenzer, Thesis Director When they first came to North America, the Moravians—a pietistic, Germanic Christian sect—settled in isolated communities where only a few people ventured out to do missionary work for the community. They separated themselves from their non- Moravian neighbors, one missionary community serving the North from its seat in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and the other serving the South from Salem, North Carolina, and neither participating in civic or military life. Then, over the course of a few decades, economic and civic circumstances forced the Moravians in North America to adapt their ways to be more like those of their non-Moravian neighbors, adopting styles of living and commerce from them. By the time of the American Civil War, though both communities maintained a separate sense of Moravian identity, they had both come to resemble their neighbors so closely that Moravians in Bethlehem and Salem were some of the first to enlist to fight against fellow Moravians.
