Packauskas1 Abstract Forty eight species of Pentatomidae are listed as occurring in the state of Kansas, nine of these are new state records. A key to all species known from the state of Kansas is given, along with some notes on new state records. ____________________ The family Pentatomidae, comprised of mainly phytophagous and a few predaceous species, is one of the largest families of Heteroptera. Some of the phytophagous species have a wide host range and this ability may make them the most economically important family among the Heteroptera (Panizzi et al. 2000). As a group, they have been found feeding on cotton, nuts, fruits, veg- etables, legumes, and grain crops (McPherson 1982, McPherson and McPherson 2000, Panizzi et al 2000). -

Introduction Considering the current state of soybean production and markets around the world, it is readily apparent that it is possible to divide the countries in the world in two halves: producer and consumers’. Consumers’ countries are mainly those belonging to the European Union that have their need for proteins used for animal feeding supplied in their majority by soybean seed or meal imports (Dros, 2004). The majority of soybean production is shared (80%) between four countries: the United States, Brazil, Argentina and China (Dros, 2004). Therefore, if we consider only those countries that may supply their internal needs and exporting either seeds, meals or oils, only the USA, Brazil and Argentina remain as exporting countries (Daydé et al., 2009). In this context, Brazil is currently the world second largest soybean producer (18%) and exporter (19%), with a cultivated area for soybean around 23 million ha and production around 3 ton/ha, reaching yearly a total production of approximately 68 million ton (CONAB, 2010). Worldwide, scientists in different countries are trying to increase both the productivity and profitability of the agricultural sector of their economies, to feed growing populations and to increase the quality of life for millions of people. In recent years there has been a growing concern about environmental changes, and about how we are using the resources available in natural habitats. -

Most trap crops in the order Brassicales target insects that 27 are specialist in plants belonging to this order, such as the diamondback moth, Plutella 28 xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), the pollen beetle, Meligethes aeneus Fabricius 29 (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), and flea beetles inthe genera Phyllotreta Psylliodes 30 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). In most cases, the mode of action of these trap crops is the 31 preferential attraction of the insect pest for the trap crop located next to the main crop. 32 With one exception, these trap crops in the order Brassicales have been used with 33 brassicaceous crops. Insectary plants in the order Brassicales attract a wide variety of 34 natural enemies, but most studies focus on their effect on aphidofagous hoverflies and 35 parasitoids. The parasitoids benefiting from insectary plants in the order Brassicales 36 target insects pests ranging from specialists, such as P. xylostella, to highly polyfagous, 37 such as the stink bugs Euschistus conspersus Uhler and Thyanta pallidovirens Stål 38 (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). -

We describe different aspects of the reproductive biology, mating behavior, and vibratory communication of the pentatomid Edessa meditabunda (Fabr.). This species shows lower copulation frequency and reproductive potential with longer sexual maturation period compared to other species of pentatomids. Females with multiple mating show increased fecundity when compared with single-mated females and both increased fecundity and reduced longevity when compared with virgin females. Courtship and mating behavior and vibratory signals are typical and similar to what was observed in other species of pentatomids, except that males started the courtship. These results constitute the first paper on biology, behavior, and vibratory communication among species of the subfamily Edessinae. -

Since then, many more specimens have become available for study, substantial papers on regional faunas have been published, and many revisions and other taxonomic changes have taken place. As a consequence, 40% of the names from the previous Missouri state list have changed or the taxa have been removed. -

Furthermore, odors from females did not attract either sex, indicating that like other phytophagous pentatomid bugs, the males produce a sex pheromone. Attraction appeared to peak in late afternoon to evening. The headspace volatiles collected from male and female T. perditor were analyzed by GC-MS and HPLC. A male-specific compound, methyl (2E,4Z,6Z )-decatrienoate (2E,4Z,6Z-10:COOMe), was identified along with a number of other compounds found in extracts from both sexes. Bioassays carried out with 2E,4Z,6Z-10:COOMe showed it was as attractive to females as the crude extract of male volatiles, suggesting that the male-produced sex pheromone consists of 2E,4Z,6Z-10:COOMe as a single component. Consecutive volatiles collections from males showed that 2E,4Z,6Z-10:COOMe began appearing in extracts from males about 9 d after the final molt, as the males became sexually mature. The stink bugs Acrosternum impicticorne, Euschistus heros, Piezodorus guildinii and Thyanta perditor (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) feed and mate on the same host plants and constitute major components of the soybean pest complex in Brazil. During mating, they communicate with species and sex-specific vibratory signals whose spectral properties are characteristic of the subfamily Pentatominae. Songs differ between species in the time structure and amplitude modulation of their units. The repertoire of A. impicticorne, E. heros and T. perditor fits into the scheme described for most investigated stink bugs: females call with a sequence of pulses that differ between species in their duration and repetition rate, and males respond with courtship songs of species-specific temporal structure and amplitude modulation of complex pulse trains. Female calling and male courtship songs are the main constituents of vibratory communication between sexes in the mating period. The other vibratory emissions appear to represent either transitional songs, support recognition during close-range courtship, or are involved in male rivalry. The first recorded vibratory emissions of P. guildinii confirm that the genus Piezodorus represents an exception within the Pentatominae. Irregularly repeated female vibratory signals of P. guildinii do not trigger typical male court- ship responses as they would in the small stink bugs Holcostethus strictus and Murgantia histrionica. On the other hand, complex rivalry with extensive frequency modulation of pulses, as also described in Piezodorus lituratus, opens a new insight into the role of vibratory communication in stink bugs. -

Hamilton This disseration investigates the behavior and selected monitoring methods of the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). The first chapter gives a comprehensive summary of the current and past research involving this insect and provides the basis for why the proceeding investigations were undertaken and how they added to the current body of knowledge about this important pest species. Chapter 2 explores the relationship between the number of hours past sunrise at which timed visual observations are conducted for H. halys and the detectable number of individuals on peach trees. The findings of this study show how the diel behavioral patterns of this insect cause large differences in the quantity observed at different times of the day (p<0.05; repeated measures). The variability of this metric associated with differences between observers is also investigated and shown to have a significant impact on the average number of H. halys seen per tree (p<0.05; repeated measures).
