  • LORD DUNMORE's ETHIOPIAN REGIMENT by CHARLES W
LORD DUNMORE'S ETHIOPIAN REGIMENT by CHARLES W. CAREY, JR. Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF ARTS IN HISTORY Peter Schmitthenner March 1995 Blacksburg, Virginia u_,'+........._ LORD DUNMORE'S ETHIOPIAN REGIMENT by Charles w. Carey, Jr. Peter Wallenstein, Chairman Department of History (ABSTRACT) Most observers consider that Lord Dunmore was the driv ing force behind the creation of the Ethiopian Regiment. This paper demonstrates that the slaves themselves provided the necessary impetus for bringing about Dunmore's Procla mation of Emancipation, and that the governor simply re sponded to slaves• willingness to take up arms in pursuit of liberty. This paper also considers the role played by non slave actors in the exploits of the Regiment. These actors included the British Parliament; various British military and government officials; the Virginia Convention of 1775; the various Virginia military units, both regular and volunteer; and the white population of Virginia as a whole. However, primary emphasis is placed upon the efforts and actions of the Ethiopians themselves. The first chapter investigates the events which led up to Dunmore's Declaration of Emancipation, and clarifies the degree to which the servile uprisings in the preceding cen tury influenced Dunmore's decision to free and arm Virginia's slaves. The second chapter details the Ethiopians' involve ment in the military actions associated with the Battle of Great Bridge on December 9, 1775. The third chapter describes the Regiment's other engagements, including its defense of the Portsmouth enclave and the British sanctuary on Gwynn's Island, and the skirmishes at St.

  • John Ferneley Catalogue of Paintings
JOHN FERNELEY (1782 – 1860) CATALOGUE OF PAINTINGS CHRONOLOGICALLY BY SUBJECT Compiled by R. Fountain Updated December 2014 1 SUBJECT INDEX Page A - Country Life; Fairs; Rural Sports, Transport and Genre. 7 - 11 D - Dogs; excluding hounds hunting. 12 - 23 E - Horses at Liberty. 24 - 58 G - Horses with grooms and attendants (excluding stabled horses). 59 - 64 H - Portraits of Gentlemen and Lady Riders. 65 - 77 J - Stabled Horses. 74 - 77 M - Military Subjects. 79 P - Hunting; Hunts and Hounds. 80 - 90 S - Shooting. 91 - 93 T - Portraits of Racehorses, Jockeys, Trainers and Races. 94 - 99 U - Portraits of Individuals and Families (Excluding equestrian and sporting). 100 - 104 Index of Clients 105 - 140 2 NOTES ON INDEX The basis of the index are John Ferneley’s three account books transcribed by Guy Paget and published in the latter’s book The Melton Mowbray of John Ferneley, 1931. There are some caveats; Ferneley’s writing was always difficult to read, the accounts do not start until 1808, are incomplete for his Irish visits 1809-1812 and pages are missing for entries in the years 1820-1826. There are also a significant number of works undoubtedly by John Ferneley senior that are not listed (about 15-20%) these include paintings that were not commissioned or sold, those painted for friends and family and copies. A further problem arises with unlisted paintings which are not signed in full ie J. Ferneley/Melton Mowbray/xxxx or J. Ferneley/pinxt/xxxx but only with initials, J. Ferneley/xxxx, or not at all. These paintings may be by John Ferneley junior or Claude Loraine Ferneley whose work when at its best is difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish from that of their father or may be by either son with the help of their father.

First and foremost, I would like to thank the Virginia Beach Historic Preservation Commission for making the research grant program available to study these little-known aspects of our area history. Jennifer Estes, Patrick Hannum, and Samuel Morrison were all critical players in an earlier study on the Skirmish at James’s Plantation. Through their efforts, we were able to identify several other parts of Princess Anne County’s role in the American Revolution – many of which found their way into this study.
