The intense focus on deep listening of sonic details from nature and electronics has formed the basis of the eclectic output of the New Zealand- born composer and sound artist. For twenty years, Miller Theatre’s flagship series has fostered the creation of new work, served as an incubator for emerging artists and a champion of those not yet well known, and created a community of adventurous listeners. In 1973, she moved to New York to teach at Hunter College. She is currently a Professor Emerita at Vassar College. During the 1960s, she collaborated with sound poets, choreographers, and visual artists, and also created a number of works including the Glass Concerts which initiated her lifelong fascination with timbre and new sound sources. In synchronous homage to Christian Barnard’s pioneering heart transplants, Lockwood began a series of Piano Transplants (1969-82) in which defunct pianos were burned, drowned, beached, and planted in an English garden. Since the early ‘90s, she has written for a number of ensembles and solo performers, often incorporating electronics and visual elements. Thousand Year Dreaming is scored for four didgeridus, conch shell trumpets, and other instruments and incorporates slides of the cave paintings at Lascaux. Duende, a collaboration with baritone Thomas Buckner, carries the singer into a heightened state, similar to a shamanic journey, through the medium of his own voice. Ceci n’est pas un piano for piano, video, and electronics merges images from the Piano Transplants with Jennifer Hymer’s musings on her hands and pianos she has owned. Recent work includes Vortex commissioned by Bang on a Can for the All-Stars; a surround- sound installation, A Sound Map of the Danube; Luminescence, settings of texts by Etel Adnan for Thomas Buckner and the SEM Ensemble; Gone! in which a little piano-shaped music box, attached to 20 helium balloons, is released from a concert grand and floats off over the audience playing, in one case, Memories. Jitterbug, commissioned by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company for the dance “eyeSpace,” incorporates Lockwood’s recordings of aquatic insects, and two improvising musicians working from photographs of rock surfaces. Poems by three of the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay are the focus of In Our Name, a collaboration with Thomas Buckner for baritone voice, cello, and ‘tape’. Much of her music has been recorded, on the Lovely, XI, Mutable, Pogus, EM Records (Japan), Rattle Records, Soundz Fine (NZ), Harmonia Mundi, and Ambitus labels. She is a recipient of the 2007 Henry Cowell Award. Nate Wooley natewooley.com Nate Wooley (b. 1974) was born in Clatskanie, Oregon and began playing trumpet professionally with his father, a big band saxophonist, at the age of 13. Considered one of the leading lights of the American movement to redefine the physical boundaries of the horn, Wooley has been gathering international acclaim for his idiosyncratic trumpet language. Wooley moved to New York in 2001 and has since become one of the most in-demand trumpet players in the burgeoning Brooklyn jazz, improv, noise, and new music scenes. He has performed regularly with John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Eliane Radigue, Ken Vandermark, Fred Frith, Evan Parker, and Yoshi Wada, in addition to collaborating with Chris Corsano, C. Spencer Yeh, Peter Evans, and Mary Halvorson. He is the curator of the Database of Recorded American Music (www.dramonline.org) and the editor-in-chief of their online quarterly journal Sound American (www.soundamerican.org) both of which are dedicated to broadening the definition of American music through their online presence and the physical distribution of music through Sound American Records. He also runs Pleasure of the Text which releases music by composers of experimental music at the beginnings of their careers in rough and ready mediums.   • Annea Lockwood, a New Zealand–Born Composer Who Settled in The
    Annea Lockwood, a New Zealand–born composer who settled in the United States in 1973, distinguishes herself with works ingeniously combining recorded found and processed sounds, live-performance and visual components, and exhibiting her acute sense of timbre. Lockwood first explored electro-acoustic music and mixed media in the mid-1960s in Europe. Initially tutored by Peter Racine Fricker and Gottfried Michael Koenig, she gained inspiration from such experimental American composers as John Cage, Morton Feldman, Pauline Oliveros, and Ruth Anderson. While perhaps best known for her 1960s “glass concerts” featuring manifold glass-based sounds and her notorious Piano Transplants—burning, burying, and drowning obsolete pianos—she was drawn to the complex beauty of sounds found in the natural environment, which she captured on tape. Lockwood was especially fascinated with the sonorities of moving water and water’s calming and healing properties and thus started an archive of recorded river sounds. This project led to various sound installations and, most important, to her now legendary and large-scale A Sound Map of the Hudson River (1982) and A Sound Map of the Danube (2005), soundscapes tracing these rivers from their sources to their deltas.1 Lockwood also incorporated recorded sounds of mating tigers, purring cats, tree frogs, volcanoes, earthquakes, and fire in such works as Tiger Balm (1970) and World Rhythms (1975). From the 1970s, she explored improvisation and alternative performance techniques and asked her performers to use natural sound sources and instruments including rocks, stones, and conch shells in Rokke (with Eva Karczag, 1987), Nautilus (1989), A Thousand Year Dreaming (1990), Ear-Walking Woman (1996), and Jitterbug (2007), among other compositions.

OTERI: This has got to be the most stunning physical environment that we've ever been in for a NewMusicBox conversation. It's sort of fitting because your music is all about the environment. ANNEA LOCKWOOD: A lot of it is. Not all of it, but a lot of it. FRANK J. OTERI: It leads me to ask you, what is the best environment to hear music in? ANNEA LOCKWOOD: There's a mixed grab bag of parts to the answer… I like resonant spaces. I love listening to music and sound in resonant spaces. Sometimes it works; of course, sometimes it doesn't work at all. You know, I like doing installations-it's not the only thing I do by any means. I do quite a lot of concert music. But I love doing installations because those are spaces, essentially, in which the audience can come and go at will. So there is real freedom of movement, freedom of choice for the people who come to look and listen. Those are favorite setups. The best place to hear music though… Not in my car. [laughs] FRANK J. I press the space bar, and it plays back instantly, with simulations of the original woodwind tones. Compare that process with the dozens of hours it took pioneers like Milton Babbitt to get just a single tone out of a synthesizer 40 years ago -- or even with the hundreds of IBM cards I tediously punched in a computer music class only 20 years ago, with three notes to show for it -- and it is clear that the very meaning of the term ''electronic music'' has changed. In fact, as the millennium turns over, it is appropriate to ask whether the term still means anything at all. Does an orchestral film score made on a computer with sampled acoustic instruments count as ''electronic music''? How about a piece for amplified string quartet? Do recordings of regular string quartets become electronic music when a D.J. fuses them in a turntable collage? Is a computerized score still electronic music when it is realized on an acoustic Disklavier piano? The boundary seems infinitely permeable. The Electronic Evolution series, beginning Wednesday at Alice Tully Hall as part of the Lincoln Center Festival, seems conceived and programmed specifically to drive such ambiguities home.

    MUS 101: Topics in Computer Music - History of Electronic Music and Sonic Arts M.A. Program in Digital Musics, Dartmouth College Winter 2013 - Dr. Tara Rodgers Course Description This course surveys conceptual, technical, and aesthetic developments over the past century in electronic, electroacoustic, computer music and sonic arts. Our tasks are to consider how past work in these fields informs creative possibilities in the present, and to gain new understandings of our own research/creative practices in historical context. We will examine work by artists who have crossed traditional boundaries of music, science, fine arts, performance, and philosophy. The selection of course texts emphasizes interviews and writings from artists and inventors themselves—so that we may glean details of their creative process and also learn from their methods of describing and documenting that process. Additional readings are drawn from the fields of sound studies, music history, and musicology. Themes and topics to be explored include: the invention of new musical instruments; indeterminacy and improvisation; acoustic ecology and soundscape composition; sound and music technologies in relation to voice, language, and the body; sound, space, and architecture; microsound, drone, and electronic dance music; format theory and data sonification. Preparation outside of class time will entail keeping up with a steady stream of readings; class sessions will typically center on listening and discussing musical works, using the readings as context; assignments will cultivate skills in descriptive writing and music/sound art composition. Many composers utilizing electronics allow an increasing awareness of climate change and human impact on our shared environment to influence their work in some regard. In many cases, this is accompanied by the notion of removing themselves (i.e., their authority as the composer) from the compositional process. This document brings diverse repertoire together to explore the various nuances of climate cognizance permeating the end result of a work. Offered is an examination of how environmental awareness impacts the degree to which a composer, utilizing electronics, relinquishes musical decisions. Chapter One identifies the subject matter and existent scholarly literature, expanded through discussion of major figures like John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, and Olivier Messiaen, as well as free improvisation. Chapter Two explores the means in which composers utilize the soundscape, viewed through established areas such as field recording, acoustic ecology, soundscape composition, sonification, and ecoacoustics. Chapters Three through Five examine the work of Hildegard Westerkamp, Matthew Burtner, and Jez riley French. Chapter Six offers additional environmental views and social concern, working toward an aesthetic which may be posited as aligning with found composition.

Four pieces from a collection entitled The Noble Snare are used for demonstration (“Homily” by Milton Babbitt, “Composed Improvisation for Snare Drum” by John Cage, “Peeping Tom” by Dan Senn, and “The Noble Snare” by Stuart Saunders Smith). In the absence of many traditional musical devices (i.e. melody and harmony), alternative means of expression are used by the composer. Each piece is discussed with regard to its distinctive compositional approach and inherent performance issues. Information is also given pertaining to the background of the Noble Snare series.
