XXIV Porretta Soul Festival 21-24 Luglio 2011 Torna La Grande XXIV Porretta Soul Festival 21-24 luglio 2011 Torna la grande musica soul Swamp Dogg, Spencer Wiggins, William Bell, Percy Wiggins, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Harvey Scales, Toni Green, Austin de Lone All Stars, Chick Rodgers, Tribute To King Curtis with Sax Gordon & Groove City, The Memphis All Star Rhythm & Blues Band e tanti altri. Già nei primi anni ’60 il primo hit “Get Down” b/w “Love- Itis.” Poi un R&B hit “Love Is Better in the A.M.” Nel 1969 firma con la Chess di Chicago e realizza “The Yolk,” “I’ll Run to Your Side,” e “Leave. Alla Stax incide “What’s Good for You (Don’t Have to Be Good to You)” b/w “I Wanna Do It.” Photo by Richard Strauss, Smithsonian Institution Rhythm and Blues 53 Tell It Like It Is by Mark Puryear In 1964 The Dixie Cups®, a female vocal trio from New Orleans, crooned out a cheerful version of “Chapel of Love” and knocked the Beatles from their number one spot on the pop charts. A year later, the trio released “Iko Iko,” a song first released in 1954 by James “Sugar Boy” Crawford as “Jock-A-Mo,” whose lyrics recount the meeting of two groups of Mardi Gras Indians. Since then, this song has been cov- ered by artists from the Grateful Dead to Cyndi Lauper, and continues to move new generations with its infectious New Orleans rhythms. The career of The Dixie Cups, and their direct and indirect roles in carrying rhythm and blues (R&B) into mainstream consciousness, speaks to the enduring pow- er of this music to transcend region and musical category and become a representative sound of the country. Musical Crossroads by Dwandalyn Reece The National Museum of African American History of musical genres, highlighting musical innovations, and Culture (NMAAHC) was established by an act of significant time periods and events along with Congress in 2003 making it the nineteenth museum historic performances to capture the music’s impact of the Smithsonian Institution.

Tributes were paid to three artists who had died since last year’s edition: Solomon Burke, a champion of the festival whose most recent appearance had been two years ago, and Clay Hammond and Al Green (of the Green Brothers), who had both performed last year. Of course, each of these three singers could be said to have had a good innings; however, during the festival, reports came through of the tragedy unfolding in Norway and the loss of many young lives, and also the, perhaps not unexpected, early death of Amy Winehouse. Adding to the sense of loss was a moving speech by the widow of Ernesto De Pascale, a journalist who had made a valued contribution to the growth of the festival. Porretta 2011 will also be remembered for the weather. Whilst the pessimist amongst us had predicted rain on the basis of the forecast of a 50% chance of precipitation each day, he turned out to be no more than half right. We did eventually wake up to rain on the third morning, but fortunately none of the performances were affected, although the lower than usual temperatures during the day meant for some cold evenings to the extent that several layers of clothing were required, and even a woolly hat was called for on the last night.

Rather a lot has been happening in Woodie world since we last had our cosy little chats, some wonderful, some very sad. However we kick off on an upbeat note. I won’t go into detail here regarding our June 5th show at London’s Borderline, you will find a review elsewhere within these pages, along with an interview I conducted with the main man, Gene Terry, a true Swamp Rock legend from those Texas, Louisiana borders, whom TFTW flew over for his first ever appearance outside the United States. What a show it proved to be, certainly a Wow factor beginning at show-time and continuing through to when we had to say "Goodnight". Tired? Yes. Elated? You bet. It was like riding on a cushion of air. As always I have to offer a massive thank you to all the artists, musicians, DJ, MC, and the front line Woodies who all helped to make it go seemingly without a hitch for fans who travelled from all corners of the UK along with parts of the European mainland, on this occasion even from far afield as Lithuania.
