Dance Now Vol 17 No 3, Autumn 08 Exit, In Flames Alexei Ratmansky and the Bolshoi, by Ismene Brown Photo Marc Haegemann/Bolshoi Ballet THIS WINTER the Bolshoi Ballet ends five rollercoaster years under the directorship of Alexei Ratmansky (interview below), who is stepping down as artistic director in order to focus on his first love, choreography. His directorship began in controversy for Russians - he was young, an 'outsider' (he had never made it into the Bolshoi Ballet as a dancer), and he was full of 'Western' ideas. Most of all, Ratmansky didn't make Yuri Grigorovich his god, as by now the majority of Bolshoi personnel expected. They, after all, were all Grigorovich alumni and acolytes. It had been stated that Ratmansky's final production would be a new Sleeping Beauty this autumn to replace Grigorovich's version (cheers from us in the West), but we have long learned that when the Bolshoi announces something it is not a decision but merely a debating point. Ratmansky, it was said last spring, would move over to keep charge of the Bolshoi's momentum in 'new productions', while Yuri Burlaka governed day-to-day direction and the octogenarian former director Yuri Grigorovich would be back in charge of his productions of the classics. Such a broken-backed push-me-pull-you marriage between an immovable past and resistible change seemed unlikely to survive, and so it proved. The management’s retraction of the announced new Sleeping Beauty is proof of that. Meanwhile Grigorovich's favourite, the vain star dancer Nikolai Tsiskaridze had been sniping increasingly publicly about Ratmansky's directorship, turning up the heat once he was secure in the knowledge that Grigorovich was back inside the theatre.

Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev: a passionate pas de deux - in life and art They are a dazzling dance partnership on stage, and a couple off it. As they prepare for a guest appearance at the Royal Opera House, Jessica Duchen talks to them about the challenges of living and working together By Jessica Duchen Tuesday, 13 th August 2013 Ballet loves a star partnership and none more so than that of Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev, the Russian duo who are firing up audiences across the globe. The pair, a couple off-stage as well as on, began their careers with the Bolshoi Ballet. Though they left in 2011, they are returning to it for one guest appearance in London this summer, in Flames of Paris. It was here, on the stage of the Royal Opera House, that they shot to joint international stardom in 2007 when the Bolshoi’s then artistic director, Alexei Ratmansky, cast them for the opening night of Don Quixote. When they reprised the roles during the company’s visit in 2010, The Independent’s dance critic commented on their outrageous charm and astounding technique, and added: “By the time we got to the curtain calls, the audience was standing and screaming for them.” Since then, matters have moved on apace. Two years ago, the duo joined the Mikhailovsky Ballet in St Petersburg, which allowed them time for plentiful guest appearances, and they also have contracts at American Ballet Theatre. Now Osipova is becoming a principal with the Royal Ballet in London; Vasiliev, though, has not been signed too.

Following performances on tour this autumn, English National Ballet presents Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s masterwork, Song of the Earth and Frank Andersen’s faithful version of the 1830s Romantic ballet La Sylphide at the London Coliseum this January where Roland Petit’s Le Jeune Homme et la Mort is also revived. Making his return to the London stage, Guest Artist Ivan Vasiliev, performs the lead role in Roland Petit’s Le Jeune Homme et la Mort alongside Lead Principal Tamara Rojo. Born in Vladistock, Russia, Vasiliev is a former Principal with the Bolshoi Ballet and American Ballet Theatre and is currently Principal with Mikhailovsky in St. Petersburg. He previously performed in Le Jeune Homme et la Mort with English National Ballet in 2011, and in 2015 he performed with the Company in Swan Lake.
