GECCO is evolving! Welcome to GECCO 2007! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you, thank all those who have participated to create the current GECCO, and tell you what’s new this year. This year represents a major transition in GECCO’s evolution. There has been a growing view that for GECCO to maintain its place as the leading conference in the field of evolutionary computation it should globalize and be held also outside the United States. Concerns about participation levels were quickly mitigated as this year GECCO had a record number of submissions. Thanks to all of you for making this transition a success. This is also the first time that GECCO is held in an academic venue, rather than a hotel. I hope that this change of atmosphere will prove to be valuable and engaging. Being at the location of Charles Darwin’s home provides an additional historical sense to all our activities. I would like to thank University College London for their hospitality, and especially Local Chair Peter Bentley for his hard work in making this possible. As in any year, GECCO is adapting. We have added two new tracks (Theory track and Generative and Developmental Systems track), and consolidated or removed others. New tracks usually emerge out of successful workshops, and some tracks are removed due to decreasing interest. Similarly, workshops and tutorials are subject to variation and selection. Many thanks to Editor in Chief Dirk Thierens who has seen this complex process through, as well as Anikó Ekárt and Tina Yu who have maintained a lively breadth of workshops and tutorials. We are also experimenting with a new poster presentation format. Rather than exhibit all posters simultaneously in one overwhelming evening, posters will be displayed across coffee breaks and lunches, as well as at the keynote evening. I hope that this format will allow more exposure for posters and more time to be seen and digested. This year’s highlight will be the keynote event. Professors Richard Dawkins, Steve Jones and Lewis Wolpert will take part in a public debate, discussing the emergence of complexity in evolution. Unlike traditional keynotes speeches, I hope that this format will provide us a unique opportunity to interact, learn and challenge some of the greatest minds in evolutionary biology. Thanks to the Science Department of the Natural History Museum for making this possible. Last but not least, let me thank GECCO administrator Pat Cattolico whose continued involvement with GECCO has proven to be an invaluable asset, and without which GECCO could now never happen. Remember that GECCO is continuously evolving: New tracks, workshops and tutorials, new presentation formats and new organizational styles. Some of these changes work better than others, and your input is critical in maintaining progress. Please let us know your opinions, what worked and what didn’t, and how can things be improved next year. Enjoy the Conference! Speakers presenting accepted papers during the technical sessions are allocated 25 minutes for each presentation, 20 minutes for set up and presentation, followed by 5 minutes for questions. Speakers in the late breaking papers sessions are allocated 15 minutes for each presentation, 10 minutes for set up and presentation, followed by 5 minutes for questions. Instructions for Session Chairs Keep the session on schedule: Please adhere to the scheduled order of talks, as well as presentation times. If a speaker is absent, we ask you to announce a short break until the next presentation is due to start. Do not start early, as participants may be moving between sessions/presentations. Introduce each speaker Moderate questions Arrive a few minutes early to check on room and equipment set-up. Please let conference organizers know immediately if problems arise or adjustments are needed.
