The Origins of the Magical Girl Genre Note: This First Chapter Is an Almost
The origins of the magical girl genre Note: this first chapter is an almost verbatim copy of the excellent introduction from the BESM: Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book by Mark C. MacKinnon et al. I took the liberty of changing a few names according to official translations and contemporary transliterations. It focuses on the traditional magical girls “for girls”, and ignores very very early works like Go Nagai's Cutie Honey, which essentially created a market more oriented towards the male audience; we shall deal with such things in the next chapter. Once upon a time, an American live-action sitcom called Bewitched, came to the Land of the Rising Sun... The magical girl genre has a rather long and important history in Japan. The magical girls of manga and Japanese animation (or anime) are a rather unique group of characters. They defy easy classification, and yet contain elements from many of the best loved fairy tales and children's stories throughout the world. Many countries have imported these stories for their children to enjoy (most notably France, Italy and Spain) but the traditional format of this particular genre of manga and anime still remains mostly unknown to much of the English-speaking world. The very first magical girl seen on television was created about fifty years ago. Mahoutsukai Sally (or “Sally the Witch”) began airing on Japanese television in 1966, in black and white. The first season of the show proved to be so popular that it was renewed for a second year, moving into the era of color television in 1967. -

It has since become my favorite manga everBy CustomerI've read Oyaumi Punpun online years before. It has since become my favorite manga ever. Inio Asano's art is beautifully detailed and weirdly "real". And of course, the story. The reason I love it so much is how much I can connect with almost all of the characters. I've been going through life not knowing where to go or what to do next. That feeling of being lost, unsure of the future - Inio captures that in this story.I can't wait to purchase volumes 6 to 7.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I woke up to use the bathroom, saw volume 5 was released, and sat down to read the first half before going back to sleep. Spunky, quirky, passively in your face, Punpun is growing into a man. -

Please send any and all comments to [email protected] Chapter 1: And Thus, Hiratsuka-sensei Sparks a New Conflict 1-1 I slammed a sheaf of papers against the table. Its contents were as eyebrow-raising as the Dead Sea Scrolls. “…what the hell is this?” It was early morning. As my eyes fell over the words on the page, a strange chill ran down my spine. The cause of this uncomfortable sense of déjà vu was, of course, the outline for the next volume of Zaimokuza Yoshiteru-sensei’s story, which he had put excruciating detail into. Would it have killed him to finish the first volume before starting the next one? The story made no sense whatsoever, and there were glaring plot holes just from the outline. The only thing I liked about it was that the protagonist was a lone swordsman. Those who are above everyone else are, by definition, alone. True heroes are loners. To be a loner is to have strength. Having no attachment to others means having nothing to protect. The urge to protect is basically nothing but a weakness. Achilles, the Ancient Greek hero, and Benkei, the most powerful warrior monk, were both defeated precisely because they had a weakness. -

Cody Poulton, Supervisor (Department of Pacific and Asian Studies) Dr. Michael Bodden, Committee Member (Department of Pacific and Asian Studies) iii ABSTRACT Supervisory Committee Dr. M. Cody Poulton (Department of Pacific and Asian Studies) Dr. Michael Bodden (Department of Pacific and Asian Studies) The mahō shōjo or “magical girl”, genre of Japanese animation and manga has maintained a steady, prolific presence for nearly fifty years. Magical Girl series for the most part feature a female protagonist who is between the ages of nine and fourteen - not a little girl but not yet a woman. She is either born with or bestowed upon the ability to transform into a magical alter-ego and must save the world from a clear and present enemy. The magical girl must to work to balance her “normal life” – domestic obligations, educational obligations, and interpersonal relationships – with her duty to protect the world.
