This untitled lyric is a minor piece. But it is typical of Pushkin in both form and content, and I will try to pinpoint the correspondences between the two. While under the strict surveillance of the Tsar's political police and unable to publish, Pushkin wrote his most famous play, the drama Boris Godunov. His novel in verse, Eugene Onegin, was serialized between 1825 and 1832. Notoriously touchy about his honour, Pushkin fought a total of twenty-nine duels. At the age of thirty-seven years, however, Alexander Pushkin was fatally wounded in such an encounter with Georges-Charles de Heeckeren d'Anthès.

I make the case that Brodsky’s poetic sensibility was originally transnational, i.e. exhibited an affinity with both foreign and domestic poetic traditions in pursuit of its own original poetics. I establish the trope of a speaker alone in a room as a leading poetic concept of Brodsky’s neo-Metaphysical style. The poems that are centered on this trope do not refer explicitly to the poetry of the British Baroque through intertextual references or imitation, which attests to the ability of Brodsky’s transnationally oriented poetry to process foreign traditions with subtlety and to incorporate key elements of it fully within his own idiom.

This examination defines the scope of vocal, technical, language and interpretive abilities required for the performance of Russian Art song literature. It also establishes the need for a pedagogical approach that is free from Eurocentric cultural biases against Russian language and culture. Intended as a reference for teachers and students to simplify the introduction of Russian Art song into the repertoire of the advanced secondary or beginning undergraduate student, it includes a discussion of learning priorities and challenges particular to native English speakers relative to successful Russian language lyric diction assimilation, with solutions. This study is designed to furnish material for a published edition of songs in the appropriate transpositions for high, medium and low voice including word-for- word and sense translations with IPA transcriptions, along with program notes for each piece. Repertoire is selected from the works of Alyab’yev, Gurilyov, Varlamov, Glinka, Dargomyzhsky, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky, as well as a few folk songs. The repertoire is grouped by difficulty and accompanied by English translations, interpretive analyses of the Russian Language poetry, and International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcriptions modified for lyric diction.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 GLASGOW UNIVERSITY libr a r y ABSTRACT The reception, familiarization and influence of Russian writers in late 19th- century/early 20th-century Spain has been a long-neglected area of investigation, and is overdue for reassessment now. This thesis studies certain characteristic moments of that process, beginning with the situation typical of much of the 19th century, in which a major Russian author like Pushkin was at least a presence, though still decisively an exotic one, on the Hispanic literary horizon. A not dissimilar status attended those figures in the Hispanic literatures who were known to readers in Russia. (The case of Brazilian literature is taken as a particular example.) There followed, as far as Russian literature in Spain was concerned, a phase of intelligent, if still largely second-hand reporting by individuals enjoying some special advantage for that purpose (Valera, Ganivet) and of enthusiasic and discriminating critical advocacy (still through intermediaries) by serious readers (Pardo Bazan, Leopoldo Alas).
