Le Tour de la France par deux enfants, a textbook written in 1877 by Augustine Fouillée, is our entry point to illustrate the strategies used in manufacturing French identity. We also analyze other texts: political speeches from the revolutionary era and from the Third Republic, as well as testimonies from both students and teachers written during the twentieth century. Bringing together close readings and research from various fields – history, linguistics, sociology, and philosophy – we use an interdisciplinary approach to shed light on language and national identity formation. Our findings underscore the connections between French primary education and national identity. Our analysis also contends that national identity in France during the Third Republic was an artificial construction and demonstrates how otherness was put in the service of populism.

Afin de fluidifier la circulation souvent chargée en saison dans le sens sortant de Torreilles plage et limiter la formation de bouchons sur le boulevard, une bretelle d'évitement du rond-point en direction de l'autoroute est en effet en cours de réalisation. Elle sera accompagnée de la mise à deux voies de la sortie du boulevard sur le rond-point. Les conditions de circulation des torreillans habitant la plage et des touristes devraient être significativement améliorées par ces aménagements, et ce dès cet été puisque le chantier sera achevé avant la saison estivale.

    IMF looks for new chief amid search for relevance by Veronica Smith 7/10/2007 As the International Monetary Fund set into motion its search for a new chief, analysts said the multilateral organization needs a fresh perspective as it struggles for credibility. On Tuesday, the European Union appeared to coalesce around France's candidate, a former finance minister, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, to succeed the departing Rodrigo Rato. French President Nicolas Sarkozy picked the socialist, who failed to clinch his party's nomination in the recent presidential elections that brought Sarkozy to power. Under an increasingly criticized gentleman's agreement, Europe chooses the head of the IMF and the United States picks the president of the World Bank, the IMF's sister institution. Some said the apparent European rush to fill the power gap left by Rato's June 28 departure announcement in an exercise of the handshake agreement could undermine the IMF search for credibility. Criticized for its methods and effectiveness, rivaled by new private or regional financing bodies, scorned by some countries in Latin America and Asia, as well as by some anti-globalization organizations, the IMF no longer is the paragon of financial power it was even 30 years ago. Alistair Cole (Cardiff University, UK), Sophie Meunier (Princeton University, US) and Vincent Tiberj (Sciences Po, Paris, France Paoper presented to the Annual Conference of the Political Studies Association, Cardiff, 25-27 March 2013 1 The overall aim of the Developments in series, form which this paper is drawn, is to provide an integrated and systematic assessment of current trends, drawing on the latest research but with sufficient background to make the book accessible for readers without a detailed knowledge of French politics. Two central questions guide the present volume. First, is there still a “French exception”, a uniquely French path to identity and globalization - if there ever was? And second, did the presidencies of Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande represent mostly rupture or continuity with French political and cultural traditions? To answer these questions, rather than identifying a single encompassing theme, the book sets out to capture the past decade or so of French politics across five main dimensions: the core political and institutional evolutions; processes of partisanship, citizenship, communication and mediation; political attitudes and elections; domestic policy reforms and the multi-level, regional and international contexts. Though there is no overarching conclusion to this volume, the key approach underpinning most chapters is one of France’s contingent governance --the country caught between converging economic, European and international pressures and the robust defence of a particular model of republican integration. The main purpose of the introductory chapter on which this paper is based is to provide a temporally specific overview that integrates the five dimensions mentioned above and contributes to our understanding of the evolution of the French polity.

Yet Rainbow Murray argues that the contest is far from over yet. Sarkozy can draw on his recent experience on the European and world stages, and Hollande must overcome historical trends where election frontrunners in France see their support fall dramatically in the immediate run up to Presidential elections. Following the opinion polls is a daily sport for any observer of French politics. Although the standings in the polls fluctuate day by day, the headline trend has remained constant for months: François Hollande is the front-runner, and Nicolas Sarkozy appears to be on course for a crushing defeat. Sarkozy has even tacitly acknowledged his own weakness, telling journalists of his regret for mistakes made and his plans for life after office. Hollande, on the other hand, is obliged to keep reminding his team that ‘we haven’t won it yet’. Last week, three eminent teams of electoral forecasters published their long-range forecasts of the result in the journal, French Politics. Two papers anticipate a victory for Hollande, although the latter article expects that a comeback from Sarkozy will result in a tighter race than the current polls would suggest.
