Die Rotbuche kann von Christian Richter dieser baumbewohnenden Laubheuschrecke nicht als Nahrungspflanze verwertet werden. Evolution isolierter B. serricauda kommt überwiegend in lokal abgrenzbaren Subpopulationen mit Teilpopulationen der einer geringen Individuenzahl vor. Tiere dieser Art weisen eine geringe Tendenz zur Dispersion auf; Individuen verteilen sich in der Regel auf ein bis zwei als Laubholz-Säbelschrecke Nahrungsquellen geeignete Pflanzen. Die Fragmentierung ihres Habitats führ- Barbitistes serricauda te zu einer drastischen Einschränkung des genetischen Austausches zwischen Populationen dieser Heuschreckenart. (FABRICIUS 1798) Durch diese Isolation lokaler Vorkommen kam es, wie biometrische und autöko- logische Untersuchungen zeigen konnten, zu Diversifizierungsprozessen, woraus eine große genetische Vielfalt innerhalb der Art resultiert. Habitatfragmentierung kann so langfristig einen Beitrag zur Biodiversität liefern, selbst wenn einige Po- pulationen lokal aussterben. Chobanov Abstract After a revision of available Orthoptera collections in Bulgaria, 9 species with one subspecies are added and 15 species and one subspecies are omitted from the list of Bulgarian fauna. A supplement to the description and a diagnosis of Iso- phya pavelii Brunner von Wattenwyl (= Isophya rammei Peshev, syn.n.) is presented. Full reference and distributional data for Bulgaria are given for 31 taxa. Oscillograms and frequency spectra of the songs of Barbitistes constrictus, Isophya pavelii and I. rectipennis are presented. Zusammenfassung Im Rahmen einer Durchsicht der verfügbaren Orthopterensammlungen in Bzlgarien wurden in die Gesamtliste der bulgarischen Fauna insgesamt neun Arten und eine Unterart neu aufgenommen sowie 15 Arten und eine Unterart von der Liste gestrichen. In der vorleigenden Arbeit werden von 31 Taxa die Refe- renz- und Verbreitungsdaten aus Bulgarien aufgelistet. Für Isophya pavelii Brun- ner von Wattenwyl (= Isophya rammei Peshev, syn.n.) erfolgt eine Ergänzung der Artbeschreibung und Differenzialdiagnose. Die Stridulationen von Barbitistes constrictus, Isophya pavelii und Isophya rectipennis werden als Frequenzspek- tren und Oszillogramme dargestellt. Introduction After a nearly 20-years break in the active studies on Orthoptera of Bulgaria, in the last years few works were published (POPOV et al. 2001, CHOBANOV 2003, ANDREEVA 2003, HELLER &LEHMANN 2004, POPOV &CHOBANOV 2004, POPOV 2007, ÇIPLAK et al. 2007) adding new faunistic and taxonomic data on the order in this country. POPOV (2007), incorporating all the published information on Or- thoptera from Bulgaria up to date, including some unpublished data, counted 239 taxa for the country (221 species and 18 subspecies).

S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4.

Michele all’Adige (TN), Italy *Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY - The grasshoppers (Insecta, Orthoptera) of a sub-mediterranean zone of the Trentino region (North- East Italy) - The aim of this work is to study the Orthoptera-fauna of an esalpic area, characterized by a kind of sub- mediterranean climate, situated in the souther part of the Trentino region (North-East Italy). The Authors report the results about the distribution of the species of Orthoptera (Insecta, Orthoptera) collected during two years of sampling (2003-2004) and the results of a statistical analysis of the data. To better characterize the distribution of Orthoptera within the studied territory, we have carried out a cluster analysis regarding the environments of sampling and a GLM considering several environmental variables: altitude, solar radiation, wetness index, proximity to rivers, lakes, prairies, main streets, coppice woods and high forests. We performed a Principal Components Analysis (PCA) using only the significant variables from the GLM. The collected data have been processed by the software R 2.1. (Core Team 2005) for the statistical analysis. The significant variables are basically the altitude, the solar radiation, the proximity to major roads and to the lakes. It is relevant the presence of some species such as: Anacridium aegyptium, Antaxius difformis, Oedipoda germanica, Calliptamus siciliae, Pseudoprumna baldensis.

This coun- try is located in the centre of the Mediterranean Basin and its palaeo-geographical origins are owed to complex natural phenomena, as well as to a multitude of centres-of-origin, where colonization of fauna and flora concerned. Out of 382 Orthoptera taxa (i.e., species and sub- species) known to occur in Italy, 160 (41.9%) are endemic. Most of them are restricted to the Alps, the Apennines or the two principal islands of Italy (i.e., Sardinia and Sicily). In addition, lowland areas in central-southern Italy host many endemic taxa, which probably originate from the Balkan Peninsula. In Italy, the following 8 genera are considered endemic: Sardoplatycleis, Acroneuroptila, Italopodisma, Epipodisma, Nadigella, Pseudoprumna, Chorthopodisma and Italohippus. Moreover, the subgenus Italoptila is endemic to Italy. For research regarding endemism, Orthoptera are particularly interesting because this order com- prises species characterized by different ecological traits; e.g., different dispersal abilities, contrasting thermal requirements or specific demands on their habitats. The highest percentage of apterous or micropterous (35.3%) and brachypterous (16.2%) endemic taxa live in the Apennines, which are among the most isolated mountains of the Italian Peninsula.

    ARTICULATA 2013 28 (1/2): 69‒90 FAUNISTIK The Orthoptera fauna of Cserhát Hills and its surroundings (North Hungary) Gergely Szövényi, Krisztián Harmos & Barnabás Nagy Abstract Cserhát is an orthopterologically relatively less studied region of the North Hun- garian Mountains. After a faunistic research conducted here, the Orthoptera fauna of the Cserhát region is summarized. The pool of formerly known 33 spe- cies is raised to 67, which is about 53% of the total Orthoptera fauna of Hungary. Seven of them (Acrida ungarica, Isophya modesta, Leptophyes discoidalis, Poly- sarcus denticauda, Poecilimon fussii, Saga pedo, Tettigonia caudata) are legally protected and two (Isophya costata, Paracaloptenus caloptenoides) strictly pro- tected in Hungary. Others (Aiolopus thalassinus, Chorthippus dichrous, Oedaleus decorus, Pachytrachis gracilis, Pezotettix giornae, Platycleis affinis, Rhacocleis germanica, Ruspolia nitidula, Tessellana veyseli) are zoogeographically also valuable here, near their northern-northwestern areal limit. Zusammenfassung Der Orthopteren-Fauna der nördlichen Mittelgebirge Ungarns ist ziemlich gut er- forscht, aber die Hügellandschaft Cserhát, in den westlichen Teil der Nördlichen Mittelgebirge, bildete bisher eine Ausnahme. Basierend auf unsere Untersuchun- gen, durchgeführt zwischen 1963 und 2011, hat sich die Artenzahl hier auf 67 erhöht (= 53% der Orthopteren-Arten Ungarns). Sieben Arten davon stehen in Ungarn unter gesetzlichem Naturschutz (Acrida ungarica, Isophya modesta, Lep- tophyes discoidalis, Polysarcus denticauda, Poecilimon fussii, Saga pedo, Tetti- gonia caudata), zwei sogar unter noch strengerem Naturschutz (Isophya costata, Paracaloptenus caloptenoides). Es gibt noch auch weitere, zoogeographisch in- teressante Arten (Aiolopus thalassinus, Chorthippus dichrous, Oedaleus deco- rus, Pachytrachis gracilis, Pezotettix giornae, Platycleis affinis, Rhacocleis germanica, Ruspolia nitidula, Tessellana veyseli), von denen manche hier am nördliche Rand ihres Verbreitungsgebiet vorkommen.

The ecological preferences and bioacoustics of bush-crickets, crickets and grasshoppers species were studied in middle and lower Prut River basin, a research conducted in 55 localities from Romania and 33 localities in the Republic of Moldova. A total number of 91 species of Orthoptera were collected in the study area: 85 species encountered on the western side of Prut River basin (9 Phaneropteridae, 24 Tettigoniidae, 1 Bradyporidae, 5 Gryllidae, 1 Gryllotalpidae, 1 Tridactylidae, 5 Tetrigidae, 39 Acrididae) and 76 species found on the eastern side (7 Phaneropteridae, 19 Tettigoniidae, 1 Bradyporidae, 5 Gryllidae, 1 Gryllotalpidae, 1 Tridactylidae, 3 Tetrigidae, 39 Acrididae). Four species are recorded for the first time in the Orthoptera fauna of the Republic of Moldova:Barbitistes constrictus (Fabricius), Poecilimon fussii Brunner von Wattenwyl, Metrioptera roeselii fedtschenkoi (Saussure) and Pholidoptera frivaldskyi (Herman). Résumé. Les préférences écologiques et bioacoustique des espèces de sauterelles, grillons et criquets ont été étudiés dans le bassin moyen et inférieur du fleuve Prut, une recherche menée dans 55 localités de la Roumanie et de 33 localités dans la République de Moldova. Un total de 91 espèces d’orthoptères a été recueillis dans la zone d’étude: 85 espèces rencontrées sur le côté d’ouest du bassin de la rivière Prut (9 Phaneropteridae, 24 Tettigoniidae, 1 Bradyporidae, 5 Gryllidae, 1 Gryllotalpidae, 1 Tridactylidae, 5 Tetrigidae, 39 Acrididae) et 76 espèces présentes sur la côte orientale (7 Phaneropteridae, 19 Tettigoniidae, 1 Bradyporidae, 5 Gryllidae, 1 Gryllotalpidae, 1 Tridactylidae, 3 Tetrigidae, 39 Acrididae).

He wrote (p. 131) “The school itself should be a pleasant place, and attractive to the eye both within and without. […] If this is done, boys will, in all probability, go to school with as much pleasure as to fairs, where they always hope to see and hear something new.” Further (p. 167) Komensky added: “The desire to know and to learn should be excited in boys in every possible manner.” The idea of linking the fun with didactics finds many followers, expressed also in tittles of activities like “Science is Fun” or “Physics is Fun”. In (Karwasz, Kruk, 2012) we defined three complementary aspects of any bit of information (an exhibition object, a film, a lecture): entertainment (“ludico” in Italian), didactics, and science. The first aspect gives an impression to a student/ visitor/ listener: “how funny it is!”. The didactical aspect induces: “How simple it is!” And the aspect of scientific curiosity induces in best students a question: “How complex it is!” These three functions add-up like three basic colors to give a full spectrum of enlightenment.
