De Shazo, Co-Chair Professor Deepak Rajagopal, Co-Chair Transportation contributes importantly to the economy and society, but at substantial environmental cost. While much progress has been made to increase the energy efficiency of transportation systems, their continued expansion is a major threat to global climate change and urban air quality. Additional mitigation strategies are needed to reduce the negative environmental and public health impacts of transportation. In this dissertation, I tackle the complexity of achieving sustainable transportation by addressing questions arise at various stages of technology development and deployment. The first essay assesses the life cycle environmental impacts of technology pathways that convert waste resources into alternative transportation fuels and identifies the most efficient ii pathways for all US counties with respect to both energy production and climate benefits. I find that utilizing these resources in the contiguous US can generate 3.1 to 3.8 exajoules (EJ) of renewable energy annually, which would be a net energy gain of 2.4 to 3.2 EJ, and would displace GHG emissions of 103 to 178 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent every year. The second essay uses machine learning techniques to identify the most powerful socioeconomic, demographic, and geospatial predictors for plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) adoption across California census tracts. I find that the market penetration of PEVs is generally higher in more affluent neighborhoods with many homeowners and highly-educated residents. The lack of pro-environment intention and behaviors as well as the proportions of low-income households and low-value and high-density housing units negatively associate with PEV adoption. I also find that the deployment of workplace charging may be more effective than the deployment of public DC fast charging. The third essay analyzes the energy and environmental impacts of transit bus electrification and identifies strategies for charging infrastructure deployment at public transit agencies in Los Angeles County. I find that the transition to battery electric buses would increase particulate matter emissions from brake and tire wear in the near term and immediately reduce NOx, CO, and GHG emissions. Smart charging would be a critical element in the planning of transit bus electrification, as it reduces costs associated with charging infrastructure and electric demand by lowering charger needs and shaving peak load. In concert, the three essays in this dissertation expand the current literature in multiple fields and the findings presented in each of the three essays have important implications for research and practices in the area of sustainable transportation at various geographical scales. iii The dissertation of Bo Liu is approved.     A Practical Scheme to Compute Pessimistic Bilevel Optimization Problem Bo Zeng Department of Industrial Engineering University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15261 Abstract In this paper, we present a new computation scheme for pessimistic bilevel optimization problem, which so far does not have any computational methods generally applicable yet. We first develop a tight relaxation and then design a simple scheme to ensure a feasible and optimal solution. Then, we discuss using this scheme to analyze and compute linear pessimistic bilevel problem and several extensions. We also provide demonstrations on illustrative examples, and a systematic numerical study on instances of two practical problems. Because of its simple structure and strong computational capacity, we believe that the developed scheme is of a critical value in studying and solving pessimistic bilevel optimization problems arising from practice. 1 Introduction Bilevel optimization is a popular modeling and computing tool for non-centralized decision making problems where two decision makers (DMs), i.e., the upper level and the lower level DMs, interact sequentially. Ideophones are defined as a set of words that are phonologically and morphologically marked and depict some form of sensory image (Dingemanse 2011b). Middle Chinese has a large body of ideophones, whose domains range from the depiction of sound, movement, visual and other external senses to the depiction of internal senses (cf. Dingemanse 2012a). There is some work on modern variants of Sinitic languages (cf. Mok 2001; Bodomo 2006; de Sousa 2008; de Sousa 2011; Meng 2012; Wu 2014), but so far, there is no encompassing study of ideophones of a stage in the historical development of Sinitic languages. The purpose of this study is to develop a descriptive model for ideophones in Middle Chinese, which is compatible with what we know about them cross-linguistically. The main research question of this study is “what are the phonological, morphological, semantic and syntactic features of ideophones in Middle Chinese?” This question is studied in terms of three parameters, viz. the parameters of form, of meaning and of use.

Abstract Most populations now use hereditary surnames, and most societies have patrilineal surnames. This naming system is believed to have started almost 5000 years ago in China. According to legends and ancient history books, there were Eight Great Xings of High Antiquity that were the ancestors of most Chinese surnames today and are thought to be descended from the two legendary prehistoric Emperors Yan and Huang. Recent work identified three Neolithic super-grandfathers represented by Y chromosome haplotypes, O3a1c, O3a2c1, and O3a2c1a, which makes it possible to test the tales of Yan-Huang and their descendant surnames. We performed two independent surveys of contemporary Han Chinese males (total number of subjects 2415) and divided the subjects into four groups based on the relationships of their surnames with the Eight Great Xings, Jiang (Yan), Ying (Huang), Ji(Huang), and Others (5 remaining Xings related to Huang).

The earliest comprehensive account of the founding of the Zhou Dynasty (which lasted from about 1045 B.C. until its extinction by the armies of the state of Qin in 256 B.C.) appears in the Shiji, or “Records of the Historian,” a history compiled about 100 B.C. by Sima Qian, the imperial historian and astronomer of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty. Sima Qian was unable to escape completely from the perspective of legend when writing about the past, which for him was a moral story that revealed complex interplays of heroism and immorality, often in a single individual. Nevertheless, Sima Qian was an independent thinker and judge of character, and if he did not achieve objectivity, he did at least attempt wherever possible to base his information on the best sources available to him. Sometimes he lists his sources for us, and in other cases he is willing to alert us that his account is based on unverifiable hearsay. In telling the story of the Zhou royal house, Sima Qian was not looking for men with feet of clay – he accepted the prevailing vision of the founders as ethical giants. Nevertheless, he did his best to create a coherent chronology of the events of the founding, and we can see his account as a comprehensive summation of the great tale that lay behind all the social and political thinking of Classical China.
