Joe and his friend Angela in a cozy corner of the popular dining club overlook- ing the harbor, the sleuth observed a distracted customer bump into the hostess as she walked away from the table. “That reminds me of the case of Switchblade Smith. Want to hear about it?” said the Private Eye. Angela rolled her eyes, “Couldn’t we order drinks fi rst?” “Switchblade Smith,” began P.I. Joe, oblivious of the interrup- tion, “was a notorious knife-fi ght- er. His body was discovered down by the docks. A bullet had entered his right ear and lodged in his brain, killing him instantly.” “The bullet was matched to a gun owned by Jacko Jenkins, another gangster and Smith’s enemy. “Jacko stated he was the last customer at the dockside bar during closing when Smith entered, raised his switchblade knife above his head and bolted toward him.” “Jacko claimed he shot in self- defense as Smith attacked him head- on. Smith’s knife was found still clutched in his right hand. He ap- parently collapsed holding it as he died.” “Jacko’s defense statement was corroborated by the bartender, the only eye-witness. But even without the bartender’s bogus statement, I knew Jacko’s account was pure fi c- tion.” Concluded P.I. Joe. “Do you know why?” “I just wanted to relax tonight,” said Angela. Okay, why?
