New York, NY – Acclaimed British musician and producer Ethan Johns will release his debut album If Not Now Then When? on July 30th 2013 through his own Three Crows Records label here in the U.S.

Released earlier this year in the UK off the back of an extensive record store tour and sold out headline run, to massive critical acclaim, Johns recorded the album in- between making records for others. If Not Now Then When? features a broad range of exemplary musicians that Johns has produced and performed with over the years, including the likes of Ryan Adams , Laura Marling , and Danny Thompson . Ethan Johns himself was the recipient of The Brit Award in 2012 for Best Producer.

When asked the inevitable, “Who produced the album?" Johns responds, "I have to offer very deep appreciation to both Dominic Monks and Jeremy Stacey who certainly took over principal duties on that front, but otherwise it was down to whoever was in the room at the time!" Letting go of control and placing faith in the players — many of whom have entrusted his ears with their own work at times — was central to the sessions and the creative spirit of the album. John's father, legendary producer , mixed the record at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles.

“I was inspired to write some of the cornerstone songs on the album while on the road in the States,” says Johns. “LA is my old hometown – lived there for years and years and the album was mixed at Sunset Sound - one of my favorite studios in the world. Having been on the road across the UK and Europe for the last few months I’m now really looking forward to finally heading back to the US to play these songs live, and releasing the album there.”

The album’s first single “Don’t Reach Too Far” - a foot-stomping, floor-pounding number - was produced by Ryan Adams, a longtime collaborator and friend of Ethan’s. The song features Johns himself on vocals, guitar, harmonica; Ryan Adams on drums and bass; and Chris Holland on organ. It was recorded at Adams’ Pax Am Studios in Los Angeles. “The recording was completely unplanned,” says Johns. “Ryan and I were hanging at his studio in LA and I literally had books of songs on the table. This one came to the surface – a song birthed from a stream of consciousness. I had only ever sung it 3 times - once when I wrote it, and twice in the studio. Ryan kept the second take. It was so immediate – the energy was flying! Ryan just caught it right there and then - kind of like an instamatic photograph. If punk was invented by cowboys in Texas and beamed to a Sears and Roebuck reel to reel in a garage in Long beach in 1963, it might have sounded like this..."
