There is this new raft of acts, including Bastille and Rudimental. I think those performances will be incredible.” But one band could make him entirely starstruck. “I’m really excited about the Arctic Monkeys. They made one of my favourite this year so I’d like to see them win.” “I’m such a big fan of the Arctic Monkeys’ drummer, Matt Helders. Am I planning to let my hair down after the awards are over? I think so! That’s part of the plan and if those guys would like to have a drink with me I’d be honoured!” Corden seems equally impressed by the addition of trophy designer Philip Treacy to the creative team. “I love this year’s trophy, it lights up! I think the idea of having a different designer create a new look for the trophy each year is great – I’ve got one of each at home.” And the fashionable theme could well rub off on our sartorial host: “I’ve always worked the same thing when I’m hosting – basically a black suit. This year, there’s talk of a jacket.” Otherwise our MC sees his role as very much business as usual: “My mission is the same as when I agreed to do it. The show isn’t about the host. It’s the music we see on stage and the people that win the awards.” Wise words whoever steps into James’s shoes in 2015 would do well to remember. He reckons , Emma Willis or Alan Carr could impress. But with the job comes a responsibility to keep the fans happy. “I took over hosting when our producer Suzi Where Music Lives Aplin and chairman came on board – now we’ve got Christian Tattersfield. It brought a change of mood, and from 3½ Good luck to all nominees million viewers we went up to 8½ or nine million. ARCTIC MONKEYS A M MASTERCARD BRITISH ALBUM OF THE YEAR NOMINEE It says a lot about Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner’s way with words that his description of the band’s fth album AM - and record-breaking fth No.1 in row, at that - is so evocative: “It’s like a Dr Dre beat, but we’ve given it a Turner bowl-cut and sent it galloping across the desert on a Stratocaster,” he smiles. And, “this is the rst time we’ve decided, ‘Let’s just make something that we haven’t made before’”. Time to download a leap of faith? The album, which sheaths the band’s spit ‘em proud lyrics and longtime talent for hooks with straight from the shop, sharp-suited r&b grooves, was recorded in the band’s new LA base with regular collaborator plus Ross Orton at the helm. BASTILLE BAD BLOOD MASTERCARD BRITISH ALBUM OF THE YEAR NOMINEE You’ve gotta love a mixtape. Bastille’s 2012 e ort, Other People’s Heartbreak, brought the band to the attention of the public; paving the way for the platinum-selling collection Bad Blood to top the chart in March 2013. The London-made LP quickly became Britain’s biggest album download of last year, selling two million copies worldwide with impressive speed. Described as a guitar group with no and built around reluctant frontman Dan Smith, Bastille’s impressive clutch of hits included the piano ballad Overjoyed, Bad Blood, the breakthrough Flaws, crowd pleasing apocalyptic epic Pompeii, Twin Peaks inspired Laura Palmer and Things We Lost In The Fire. But Smith reminds us to look past the chart friendly tracks: “The singles people have heard can make people think we’re one thing but if you listen to our album there’s a lot of other stu going on.” By underlaying classic melody structures with the odd hint of a dance beat, each song surges, somehow, with a power that’s urgent and vital. Bad Blood swishes wildly between musical styles – in uenced, says Smith “by hip hop and Simon & Garfunkel” – switching r&b smoothness for anthemic Gregorian chanting; it’s soul searching, heart rending, rousing but melancholic in mood. Produced by Smith alongside Mark Crew, Bad Blood earned comparisons to early Coldplay in its stadium ambitions. Luckily the band’s creative juices ow - they’re on a roll. Says Dan, “We’d love to have another album out next year. We talk about it and we’re really excited”. Meanwhile, in November, Bad Blood was repackaged as All The Bad Blood to include Of The Night (harking back to those early mixtape mash-ups) as well as - whisper it - a new guitar sound.

We were nominated for Best British Single for Feel The Love before the release of our debut album - Home. It was such a great night even though we didn’t win. It’s an absolutely amazing feeling for us to be nominated for not one but three awards just one year later… and to also perform on the night is just an honour. We intend to bring our signature party vibe.”

Rudimental

RUDIMENTAL H O M E MASTERCARD BRITISH ALBUM OF THE YEAR NOMINEE Like the glass and a half of milk squeezed into a certain chocolate bar or the 18 oranges in every carton of juice, fourpiece Rudimental have packed so much positivity into their debut Home it’s all but over owing. That positivity comes from where they come from, London’s Hackney. Says the band’s , “In the past Hackney has had a negative reputation. But there is light in these dark places”. In 2012 The Hackney Weekender provided the perfect springboard for the band’s rst No.1 single Feel The Love featuring John Newman. And the half- nished album Home, which would itself top the chart after release in April 2013, “all just seemed to click perfectly” after that, explains DJ Locksmith. “When the four of us get in the studio together something special happens, it’s very organic.” “It’s a culture, atmosphere, vibe and energy we’ve tried to create, rather than just singles and albums.” The Rudimental culture is a melting pot of r&b, house, dubstep, drum & bass and the proudest of pop – hands in the air “Festival music” says Piers Agget. It’s inclusive – the wide range of artists featuring on six Home singles so far include Ella Eyre (providing vocals on their second No.1 single Waiting All Night), Foxes, Emeli Sandé and the impressive MNEK. But everyone who jams brings something new to the table. Says Kesi Dryden, “I think the emotion comes from the way we make it, in the traditional sense. We all play instruments and most of our ideas come from jamming. There hasn’t really been any played with live instruments for a long time”.

Howard Lawrence

DISCLOSURE S E T T L E MASTERCARD BRITISH ALBUM OF THE YEAR NOMINEE You can call it garage, 2 Step or dubstep. Some say it owes its roots to house, but to others, it’s down to the chorus: out-and-out pop. Settle, the UK No.1 debut album by Surrey’s unexpected heroes Disclosure is, ultimately, feel-good dance music. And who has got anything bad to say about that? Guy and Howard Lawrence are aged just 22 and 19 respectively. Brought up by a guitarist father and lounge room mum they have classical training and music at their very core. The brothers have morphed from on-the-cusp producers to one of the most talked- about acts in the country. Settle, consisting of “pop-structured songs in the style of house music and garage,” according to Howard, harks back to the elation of 90s dance music while the electronica edge keeps it fresh. Settle’s balancing act between the dance oor and the radio playlist is a thriller. White Noise featuring AlunaGeorge, No. 2 in February, is a pressure cooker of pop euphoria. , London Grammar, Eliza Doolittle, Ed McFarlane of and Sam Smith each add a surprising e ervescent twist. On top of the beats, rhythms and rhymes, of course the knack of choosing guests to work with is, in itself, a talent. Says Howard, “We like to work with people who do more than just sing… we want an actual collaboration”. Although they’re brothers there is no sign of the erce sibling rivalry that’s haunted the likes of Oasis. At least, not too much: Says Guy, ‘’I’m like, bruv, I wanted this to come out on White Label. And he’s there talking about the f****** ‘top 10!’”

It also topped The Record Store Chart’s annual best-seller’s list. The record was recorded in secrecy in New York over a two year period with long-time producer Tony Visconti, who described its subject matter as almost wholly observational, and style as “quite a rock album”. He also said, “If people are looking for classic Bowie, they’ll nd it on this album, if they’re looking for innovative Bowie, new directions, they’re going to nd that on this album too”. Hailed by as “the greatest comeback album in rock’n’roll history,” Bowie announced its planned release on his sixty sixth birthday on January 8th, simultaneously releasing a single, the introspective teaser Where Are We Now. The video for that and the subsequent four singles went on to notch up 15m YouTube views between them. Although fascinating and rewarding, The Next Day is challenging; these are not easy-to-access charttoppers, they are mysterious, multilayered, contemplative sonic artworks to enjoy, ponder on and deconstruct; upbeat musicality laced with a theme of violence and death. Among them, You Feel So Lonely You Could Die is an eerie retribution ballad, Valentines Day is a requiem for a school shooting, while I’d Rather Be High dips deep among of war. The disarming You Will Set The World On Fire steps back from it all to send a starlet on the way to success. With 29 songs recorded during the making of, The Next Day Extra, containing an extra CD of previously unreleased tracks plus and DVD lmed moments, was released in November.

CALVIN HARRIS FT ELLIE GOULDING ELLIE FT HARRIS CALVIN media recommendations, followed by a quick look on YouTube at the promo, does the trick. So The BRITs will this year recognise the growing role played by social media, by introducing the British Video Award. Want to make your mark on British music? Success is all about delivering hits. The British Singles chart is, as ever, so exciting. After all, with the immediacy of digital download, there’s no better way to discover what’s hot - whether that’s right here, right now, or in a moment like this. BASTILLE POMPEII ONE DIRECTION Overall, the sales of singles in the UK remain buoyant. In 2013 Virgin, Universal ONE WAY OR ANOTHER four tracks became million sellers – that’s the most since 1998. TEENAGE KICKS Ubiquitous global hits by Robin Thicke, Avicii and Daft Punk ft. Syco Music, Sony Pharrell Williams were chased all the way to the million mark by the two biggest selling tracks by British artists. Passenger (aka 29 year old Mike Rosenberg from Brighton) may have been held o the top spot, but the No. 2 peak for saw the slow-burn track chalk up 1.03 million fans of his music. Meanwhile La La La, a track by Naughty Boy, featuring BRITs Critics’ Choice winner Sam Smith, earned almost the same with 941,000 copies. Upon its release, it also bagged the accolade of fastest selling single as it made its way to No.1 in its rst May week. Although trends in music continue to go global, a healthy 37.5% of the year’s biggest sellers were made ELLIE GOULDING BURN NAUGHTY BOY FT SAM SMITH here in Britain. It bodes well too that of the 31 singles Polydor, Universal LA LA LA that reached the UK top spot, 18 fresh-faced hit makers Virgin, Universal were reaching that high for the very rst time. Increasingly, the singles chart – comprising the freshest sounds, the must-have hits, and those catchy tracks we’ve heard on soundtracks or adverts, operates almost independently of the album countdown. There’s no shame in being a singles act or a one-hit-wonder. Hell, no - singles have a magic all of their own. Voting goes up to the wire in this category so nerves have begun to jangle. Just one act on our list already knows what winning The BRIT Awards’ British Single gong feels like. One Direction triumphed in 2012’s public vote for the track What Makes You Beautiful, and their 2014 nod for the Comic Relief double A side One Way Or Another/Teenage Kicks marks CALVIN HARRIS FT ELLIE GOULDING OLLY MURS DEAR DARLIN’ another mammoth year for the ve-piece across every sector. I NEED YOUR LOVE Epic, Sony Columbia, Sony Calvin Harris was another act breaking records as well as making them. I Need Your Love ft. Ellie Goulding was the remarkable eighth top ten single prised from just one studio album; the UK No. 1 collection . The use of featured artists remains a hot trend – but remember the hit is always attributed to main musician listed. However, BRITs Critics’ Choice nominees past and present are in high demand. Calvin’s mate Ellie Goulding, who scooped the Critics’ Choice gong in 2010, is also nominated in her own right for Burn, her rst British No. 1 single. AlunaGeorge, shortlisted for Critics’ Choice in 2013, loaned their sound to Disclosure’s No. 2 hit White Noise. JOHN NEWMAN LOVE ME AGAIN PASSENGER LET HER GO And Ella Eyre, featured in the 2014 Critics’ Choice shortlist, Island, Universal Nettwerk was all over the massive Waiting All Night by Rudimental. It’s the second time Rudimental have triumphed with the featured artist move – and it can be a lucrative business for all. John Newman, who appeared on their 2013 stunner Feel The Love, used the British Single shortlist as a springboard. He’s built on last year’s success and appears now under his own steam, thanks to the mammoth No. 1 hit Love Me Again. Finally, the single Pompeii proved a boon for our other nominations frontrunner Bastille. The South London quartet turned thousands of fans onto their sound with the track which, as the nation’s biggest selling song by a band, charted at No.2 but went on to hang around all year.
