I.1[53] and Enn. VI.4[22]. In other words, it does not, as in Descartes, assume the form of an intuition by means of which the subject, grasping itself as consciousness, would, at the same time, have an evident revelation of its essence. -

Plotinus and the Artistic Imagination John Hendrix In the thought of Plotinus, the imagination is responsible for the apprehen- sion of the activity of Intellect. If creativity in the arts involves an exercise of the imagination, the image-making power that links sense perception to noet- ic thought and the nous poietikos , the poetic or creative intellect, then the arts exercise the apprehension of intellectual activity and unconscious thought. According to John Dillon in “Plotinus and the Transcendental Imag- ination,” 1 Plotinus’ conception of the imagination led to the formulation of the imagination as a basis of artistic creativity. In Plotinus, imagination operates on several different levels: it produces images in sense perception, it synthesizes images in dianoetic thought, and it produces images in correspondence with the articulation through logos of noetic thought. -

Shew for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy to be taken September 2008 Title: THE PHENOMENON OF CHANCE IN ANCIENT GREEK THOUGHT Approved: Dr. Peter Warnek This dissertation engages three facets of Greek philosophy: 1) the phenomenon of tyche (chance, fortune, happening, or luck) in Aristotle's Physics, Nicomachean Ethics, and Poetics; 2) how tyche infonns Socrates' own philosophical practice in the Platonic dialogues; and 3) how engaging tyche in these Greek texts challenges established interpretations of Greek thought in contemporary scholarship and discussion. I argue that the complex status of tyche in Aristotle's texts, when combined with its appearance in the Platonic dialogues and the framework of Greek myth and poetry (poiesis), underscores the seriousness with which the Greeks consider the role of chance in human life. -

Sadler) Despite widespread and perennial tendencies towards oversimplification, both on the parts of philosophers and other academics or intellectuals, and on the parts of other people less explicitly concerned with and formed by academic and intellectual discourses and activities, our moral lives always remain irreducibly complex. Our moral theorizing, our attempts to provide more illumination, intelligibility, and consistency to our moral lives and their constitutive elements, takes place against the backdrop and within the context of this complexity. Whether explicitly and consciously articulated or only implicitly worked out through action and desire, whether closely focused on a particular situation, action, or choice or extended to questions and matters broader in scope, our practical reasoning is similarly situated. -

Long Spring 2012 Abstract The Coherence of Stoic Ontology by Vanessa de Harven Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy University of California, Berkeley Professors Dorothea Frede and Klaus Corcilius, Co-chairs Any thoroughgoing physicalist is challenged to give an account of immaterial entities such as thoughts and mathematical objects. The Stoics, who eagerly affirmed that only bodies exist, crafted an elegant solution to this challenge: not everything that is Something (ti) exists. Rather, some things have a derivative mode of reality they call subsistence: these entities are non-existent in that they are not themselves solid bodies, but they are nonetheless Something physical because they depend on bodies for their subsistence. My dissertation uncovers the unifying principles of Stoic subsistence, and shows how they can account for thoughts and other immaterial entities without running afoul of their physicalist commitments. While all commentators agree that the Stoics posited Something as the highest category of being, they have failed to find a coherent physicalist account of Stoic ontology. -

But by human virtue we mean not the virtue of the body but that of the soul, and we also say that happiness is an activity of the soul.. .The student of politics therefore must study the soul, but for the sake of these things and to the extent that is sufficient for the things sought. (EN 1102a5-25)1 The study of the human good requires the study of the human soul; Aristotelian ethics requires Aristotelian psychology. Not too much psychology, Aristotle warns us, but enough for the purpose at hand (1102a23-6) - the Ethics' purpose of defining the human good and explaining how it is achieved. Thus as ethicists we can for instance ignore questions about the ontological status of soul-parts. What do we need to know? Aristotle's answer comes from the function argument (EN 1097b21-98a20), whose conclusion he restates in our opening quotation. The human good consists in the excellent performance of the human function; the human function consists in distinctively human activity, i.e. a distinctively human life; this can only be the activity of the distinctive parts of the human soul.2 The ethicist must thus study these parts enough to understand what they do - their functions - and what makes them do that excellently - their virtues. Aristotle assumes without argument that we know something general but crucial about these distinctive parts: they are those that “have logos” - usually glossed as “share in reason,” “are rational.”3 He states this already in the function argument (EN 1098a3-5); later discussions give us more detail. -
Project Abstract the Summer Program for Diversity in Logic for Undergraduates Builds Upon the PIKSI Summer Program Model, Focusi
Project Abstract The Summer Program for Diversity in Logic for Undergraduates builds upon the PIKSI Summer Program Model, focusing on Logic, an area in philosophy needing to increase diversity. We request seed funding for the pilot run of the program in May of 2016, when we will offer 12 students the opportunity to explore an exciting research theme in Logic –Paradoxes—receive small-group tutoring in formal techniques, receive mentoring and support for professionalization, experience validation, understanding and advice regarding diversity issues they have encountered –sexism, racism, ableism (and which the students may worry about encountering them in the profession), and develop a sense of community with students and faculty with whom they can identify and, in turn, come to strengthen their own identities. Project Purpose Our goal is to empower students to conceive of themselves as aspiring logicians, philosophers of logic and formal philosophers who belong in our profession. As Audrey Yap has noted, a majority of philosophy majors encounter some logic as a part of their undergraduate curriculum. Increasing diversity in logic is not simply a problem of exposure, but concretely addressing underlying pressures women and minority students experience, particularly stereotype threat and pernicious ideas about “natural aptitude.” (1) These pressures are especially strong in the subfield of logic, where almost no women and minorities have contributed to the research literature until very recently, and women and minorities remain underrepresented to a higher degree than in philosophy more broadly. Women and minorities learning logic can be vulnerable to feeling that a field like logic, that tends to be male and white dominated on the whole, is not welcoming to them.
