I am extremely delighted to extend a very warm welcome to the delegates attending the Airlines Association of Southern Africa’s 49th Annual General Assembly. It is an honour to welcome all members of the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA), distinguished guests and aviation sector stakeholders to the LUX* Saint Gilles Hotel in Reunion. I am privileged to address you in my capacity as both CEO of Cemair, and the Chairperson of AASA.

The theme for this year’s Annual General Assembly (AGA) is What’s stopping us? Air transportation is an important catalyst in the promotion of trade and business opportunities in the region. Air transportation also contributes substantially to the GDP’s of many countries, and is a net creator of jobs in aviation and industries peripheral to the sector. In a fiercely competitive global market, African airlines are striving for world class equipment and skills to ensure their products are able to compete with airlines worldwide. What is hampering the sustainability of airlines in the region? The AGA is a forum for stakeholders, government and industry to jointly examine and robustly engage on issues preventing African and our Indian Ocean airlines from realising their true potential. We are excited to have secured the presence of pre-eminent speakers in their various focus areas who are here to share their experiences and knowledge from around the world. It is my sincere wish that we have a successful and enjoyable AGA, with outcomes that will make a difference to airlines in Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. Though we may be competitors, we are tasked with similar objectives, missions and visions, and I hope the deliberations to come will be fruitful. Ladies and Gentlemen, and distinguished guests in attendance, enjoy the programme. Yours Sincerely,

Miles van der Molen Chairperson Airlines Association of Southern Africa
