Yourself 142 xii Chapter 1 Introduction to the Airline Industry An airline is ‘a company that provides air transport services for traveling passengers and freight’ (Wikipedia, 2017). For providing such services, airline companies need to utilize aircraft and they may establish partnerships or alliances with other airlines for codeshare agreements. Moreover, for business operations, airline companies also need to have an air operating certificate or license issued by a governmental aviation body. Partnerships are a very common business strategy in the industry, including the airline industry, to establish collaboration for facilitating the business operations. Accordingly, airlines would form alliances for mutual benefits. The main and emerging airline alliances will be presented in Chapter 2. In addition, code-share is perhaps one of the most typical practices for business operations in the airline industry. A codeshare refers to the practice in which two or more airlines share the same flight. However, airlines still publish and market their respective flights under their own airline designators with their own flight numbers as in their published timetable or schedule. In this textbook, the word ‘airline’ is used interchangeably with that of ‘aviation’. Tremendous change has taken place in the airline industry since its inception in the early 20th century. Generally speaking, the history of aviation can be traced back to kite flying in China that took place several hundred years BC. Kite flying can thus be seen as the earliest man-made flight attempt. That the Wright brothers, American 1 Aviation English inventors and aviation pioneers, initially attempted to fly their mechanic invention in the air, laid the foundation of the modern-day airline industry because without the invention of aircraft it is impossible to vision the growth of the airline industry as it is now. The Wright brothers’ flying machine can thus be viewed as the prototype of the modern-day aircraft. Apart from the aircraft invention and its gradual and steady advancement, the transformation of the airline landscape is propelled by globalization which has become such an established phenomenal influencer to the point that global mobility is enhanced and intensified. As a result, the airline industry began to prosper. In addition, the rise of mass tourism has fueled the development of the airline industry. The market of the airline industry along with its management and practice has further been affected by the arrival of the low cost carriers (LCC) that makes the airline industry even more competitive. To sum up, the airline industry is an interesting industry to be understood. From such understanding, practical purposes can be realized, one of which being to actually work in it, not to mention being part of the global mobile population who need the service of the airline industry. Accordingly, it is important to have a better understanding of the airline industry. In the following,

  • Strengthening Respect for Human Rights, Strengthening INTERPOL
Strengthening respect for human rights, strengthening INTERPOL November 2013 Fair Trials International’s vision: a world where every person’s right to a fair trial is respected, whatever their nationality, wherever they are accused. About Fair Trials International Fair Trials International (‘Fair Trials’) is a UK-based non-governmental organisation that works for fair trials according to international standards of justice. Our vision is a world where every person’s right to a fair trial is respected, whatever their nationality, wherever they are accused. We pursue our mission by providing assistance, through our expert casework practice, to people arrested outside their own country. We also address the root causes of injustice through broader research and campaigning, and build local legal capacity through targeted training, mentoring and network activities. In all our work, we collaborate with our Legal Expert Advisory Panel, a group of over 120 criminal defence experts from 28 EU Member States. Fair Trials is active in the field of EU criminal justice policy and, through our INTERPOL work, international police cooperation, extradition and asylum. Thanks to the direct assistance we provide to hundreds of people each year, we are uniquely placed to offer evidence of how international law enforcement systems affect individual rights. Acknowledgment Fair Trials is grateful to all its funders and supporters, in particular the Oak Foundation and the Street Foundation which fund our law reform work. We would like to thank our Legal Expert Advisory Panel for providing information on local laws and practices relating to INTERPOL. Thanks also to Richard Elsen (Byfield Consultancy), Pauline Thivillier, Giovanni Bressan, Raquel Perez, Martin Jones, Lucy Hayes, and Jemima Hartshorn for their assistance.
