Callington Newsletter Callington News August 2017 www.callington-tc.gov.uk Bowling Club raises the bar for the second year running A bit of creative flair and a lot of obvious hard work, with a great sense of fun, combined to make the Bowling Club deserved overall winners of the Best Adult Float award in the Carnival and the Best in Carnival with their themed entry of The Armada. With a float which sported Sir Francis Drake and companions and accompanying walkers providing an excellent portrayal of the entire Spanish fleet, the bowlers proved that enthusiasm and a bit of graft can bring just rewards and help a group of people gel. All the entries put in a bucketful of effort and obviously had a great day out, and it was great to see a good number of specialist classic cars and agricultural vehicles, as well as commercial entries from the area. Why not put Saturday 7th July 2018 into your diaries now and set about gathering friends, neighbours or fellow workers to plan, design and build a float or a walking entry? Or, if you would like to get involved in the preparations during the run-up to the carnival, why not join the Carnival Committee? Otherwise, there is always a need for volunteers to help on the day in a variety of roles. This time they went on a steam train with a hike to the camp site. We put up tents, played in the woods, went on a bear hunt where we found a huge bear who was having a picnic with everybody's teddies. We sang songs around a camp fire and didn't go to sleep until past midnight! The Cubs have been cooking outside. They have also drawn maps of their local area, learnt the eight points of a compass and grid references. We used this knowledge to help us on a hike, they didn't get lost! The Scouts followed a route to the park using their compass and directions they were given. They've also done some outside cooking and completed their Athletics Badge with a Sports evening. All sections had a blast on our last session before the summer holidays building dens and cooking s'mores in the woods. We followed blind trials, played wide games and ate lots of cake! If you think your young person would really enjoy this then why not come along and give it a try.

  • Pencarrow Head to Gribbin Head Management Area Reference: MA04 Policy Development Zone: PDZ2
Location reference: Pencarrow Head to Gribbin Head Management Area reference: MA04 Policy Development Zone: PDZ2 Cornwall and Isles of Scilly SMP2 Final Report Chapter 4 PDZ2 11 February 2011 DISCUSSION AND DETAILED POLICY DEVELOPMENT The estuary mouth settlements of Polruan and Fowey both have extensive conservation areas and high numbers of listed buildings clustered close to the quayside areas (see inset map, left). The quays and harbours themselves are mostly listed structures. The docks area of Fowey (inset photo, below) is developing to meet the needs of the remaining china clay industry and is now the main port used for the onward transport of this material. There are generally acknowledged to be significant social and commercial links between Fowey and the Settlements of Par and St Austell in the adjacent PDZ3 to the west. Information from Fowey Harbour Commissioners indicates that a certain amount of dredged material (silt, sand, gravel) is removed from the harbour each year and placed on local beaches (it is not specified which beaches). It is assumed that this will continue whilst navigational channels are maintained in relation to commercial use of the harbour. Areas of the foreshore are also owned by Fowey Harbour Commissioners. Some evidence of new rock slides in Polysfoot Cave is also reported. The preferred plan for this whole area is to continue with a policy of hold the line, in Fowey Docks order to meet both socio- economic and historic objectives. It is felt to be the most practical way of providing effective flood and erosion risk management to the communities.

  • Cornwall Council
Cornwall Council Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment ANNEX 5 – Chronology of Major Flood Events in Cornwall June 2011 1800 – 1899 A storm caused coastal flooding affecting a number of communities along the south coast on 19-20 January 1817. Polperro harbour was destroyed by this storm and Looe was badly damaged. Truro suffered from numerous flooding events during the 1800s (1811, 1815, 1818, 1838, 1841, 1844, 1846, 1848 (twice), 1869, 1875, 1880, 1882 (twice), 1885, 1894 and 1899). These were usually associated with high river flows coinciding with high tides. Known as the Great Flood of 16 July 1847, due to an intense rainstorm event on Davidstow Moor water collected in the valley and forced a passage of water down the Camel and Inney. Bodmin - Dunmere Valley and the whole area below Dunmere Hill was flooded by the River Camel. Dunmere Bridge was washed away as was the new 40 feet (12 m) high railway bridge. At St. Breward, bridges from Gam Bridge to Dunmere were washed away by a wall of water 12 to 18 feet (3.5-5.5 m) above normal along the River Camel. The devastating floods that swept down from Davidstow Moor washed away all but two of the bridges along the River Camel - Wadebridge and Helland being the only survivors. Serious flooding occurred in Par and St Blazey in November 1852. November 1875 saw heavy rain resulting in serious flooding in Bude, Camelford, Polmorla, Hayle, St Just, Penzance and Truro. Extreme rainfall in October 1880 resulted in serious flooding in both Bodmin and Truro. High tides at the end of September and early October 1882 resulted in flooding in Boscastle, Truro, Wadebridge and Padstow.

  • Seaton, Looe and Fowey Catchment Management Plan Consultation Report
EA-S'oU fh \K/£c>t LEAPs £ 0 x ^ 1 SEATON, LOOE AND FOWEY CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT PLAN CONSULTATION REPORT “ ■€ National Rivers Authority South Western Region NRA Copyright Waiver This report is intended to be used widely and may be quoted, copied or reproduced in any way, provided that the extracts are not quoted out of context and that due acknowledgement is given to the National Rivers Authority. Published December 1994 Foreword The Seaton, Looe and Fowey is the first group of catchments for which the NRA’s Cornwall Area is preparing a Catchment Management Plan (CMP). The preparation of this plan is part of a national programme to prepare CMP’s for all catchments in England and Wales over the next 5 years. An important part of the Catchment Management Plan process is public consultation which is designed to allow those who live in, or use, the catchment to have an input into the development of NRA plans and work programmes. The Consultation Report includes relevant information about the catchment and lists the issues identified by the NRA which need to be addressed. Following the public consultation period the NRA will produce a Final Plan which will set out targets for action by the NRA and others over the coming years. We intend to set up Steering Groups comprising representatives of organisations and interests in the catchment to monitor progress. The Seaton, Looe and Fowey catchments are essentially high quality environments and the NRA’s vision is one of maintaining and reinforcing current high standards and ensuring that the character of the water related environments is maintained.
