Bowling Club raises the bar for the second year running

A bit of creative flair and a lot of obvious hard work, with a great sense of fun, combined to make the Bowling Club deserved overall winners of the Best Adult Float award in the Carnival and the Best in Carnival with their themed entry of The Armada. With a float which sported Sir Francis Drake and companions and accompanying walkers providing an excellent portrayal of the entire Spanish fleet, the bowlers proved that enthusiasm and a bit of graft can bring just rewards and help a group of people gel.

All the entries put in a bucketful of effort and obviously had a great day out, and it was great to see a good number of specialist classic cars and agricultural vehicles, as well as commercial entries from the area.

Why not put Saturday 7th July 2018 into your diaries now and set about gathering friends, neighbours or fellow workers to plan, design and build a float or a walking entry?

Or, if you would like to get involved in the preparations during the run-up to the carnival, why not join the Carnival Committee? Otherwise, there is always a need for volunteers to help on the day in a variety of roles.

LION

Starring Dev Patel & Nicole Kidman

"Lion is an astounding, all-encompassing story of hope, determination and dumb luck that will leave you both crying like a baby and clapping like a seal once the credits roll."

"This is an inspiring story about one young man's search for identity."

"An astonishing true story that's treated with an admirably light and artistic touch, rather than an overly dramatic heavy hand." Saroo must learn to survive alone in Kolkata, before ultimately being adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, armed with only a handful of memories, his unwavering determination, and a revolutionary technology known as Google Earth, he sets out to find his lost family and finally return to his first home.

The Beavers have been on another sleepover! This time they went on a steam train with a hike to the camp site. We put up tents, played in the woods, went on a bear hunt where we found a huge bear who was having a picnic with everybody's teddies. We sang songs around a camp fire and didn't go to sleep until past midnight!

The Cubs have been cooking outside. They have also drawn maps of their local area, learnt the eight points of a compass and grid references. We used this knowledge to help us on a hike, they didn't get lost!

The Scouts followed a route to the park using their compass and directions they were given. They've also done some outside cooking and completed their Athletics Badge with a Sports evening.

All sections had a blast on our last session before the summer holidays building dens and cooking s'mores in the woods. We followed blind trials, played wide games and ate lots of cake!

If you think your young person would really enjoy this then why not come along and give it a try. We meet in the Scout Hut at the top of the Co-op carpark in New Road, Callington.

Maybe you fancy helping out too, we are always seeking adult members to join our ever growing team. It's great fun and extremely rewarding. It looks fantastic on your CV too.

You would be helping the youngsters of the local community to get outdoors, try new things, gain confidence and most importantly have fun!

Now the Carnival is Over

Well that’s it over for another year! Well done to all those who took part and made it a bigger and better event than ever before. So who won what?

Junior Walker – Helluva Pasties Adult Walker – New Outlook Junior Float – Ladybirds Adult Float – Callington Bowling Club Best in Carnival – Callington Bowling Club

There was an objection to the Adult Walker as they were dressed as St Trinians pupils, so should they be judged in the Junior Category. The objection was overruled because those wearing the costumes were definitely over 16!!!!!

Callington Bowling Club strike again, winners for two years in a row. They looked amazing as Sir Francis Drake playing bowls while the British Navy waited calmly, with the Spanish Armada following on behind. You’ve never seen anything like it!

So who is going to challenge the Bowling Club for top spot next year? Citizens Advice Bureau returns to Callington

Thanks to sponsorship from Callington Rotary Club and a grant from the Cornwall and East Devon Rotary District (1175), the CAB will return to Callington for a 12-month trial period starting in August. The CAB will be available in the Town Hall, on the last Friday of the month starting on the 25th August at 10.00am. Initially on a pop-in basis. The Rotary Club hope that this will bring a very useful service to the town making the advice and assistance that the CAB can give more accessible in this area.

Mount Kelly Choral Society News

The Mount Kelly Choral Society (charity no. 1172838) in Tavistock will be starting the new term on Thursday September 7th. This mixed choir always welcomes newcomers. They sing a wide variety of choral works and perform two or three concerts a year. Although aspiring to high standards, anyone who wishes to develop their singing abilities is welcome. Auditions are usually only required if the section for the voice concerned is oversubscribed. The choir is very friendly, reasonably serious but NOT SOLEMN! You can attend up to six rehearsals on a trial basis, without obligation.

Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7.30 to 9.30 in the Melvin Hall at Mount Kelly College and the first one of the new term will be on Thursday, September 7th, when work will start on Handel’s Ode on St. Cecelia’s Day and Rutter’s Magnificat for the concert on Saturday, 18th November in St. Eustachius’ Church, Tavistock.. After Christmas, we will be rehearsing Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor for a concert on March 17th, also in St. Eustachius’ Church. Annual subscriptions are £50 full subscription, £40 concessionary and £25 for under 30s. Membership is free to anyone under 18.

Mount Kelly College is on the left, off the A386, leading out of Tavistock towards Okehampton. Ample parking is available. August, the silly season as I call it, is with us. The Summer so far has been an extraordinarily busy period for us what with attendance at the “Genealogy Day” at and various Museums in Cornwall, meetings at which Callington has had a presence during which training and discussion of protocols takes place. Thanks to Roy and Elaine who have kept us in the loop.

We have a number of silver cups relating to the Carnival and were recently contacted by Gwen James regarding the first entry on a particular cup. We do not have the plinth which would have carried the ‘title’ of the Cup but suspect it was awarded to Queens or Queen of Queens as the first entry was for Trudy Hambly of Callington who won it in 1971. To show how far afield entries were received is to acknowledge the winners who came from such places as Mt Charles, Whetstone, St Ewe, , Launceston, Pensilva, Calstock and St Germans!

After the recent generous donation from Callington Singers to the Heritage Centre we have, thanks to the eagle eye of Scott Sanders, also been admitted to the Tesco ‘Bags of Help’ scheme. This enables organisations, clubs etc in S.E. Cornwall to apply for funding with various amounts of money at stake based on a voting system to be found in their Stores. Once admitted, you are assured of the basic amount £1,000 but this can be increased subject to the success of your organisation in the local vote. So the verdict is, get in to your local Tesco and take part. It has already been agreed that the windfalls coming our way should be utilised to firstly up grade our old and very slow computer system. So following a presentation at a committee meeting when minimum standards and options for a new installation were discussed, it was agreed to obtain quotes from suitable providers as we are obliged to do. Thanks to the Old School and Stoke Climsland News we have been made aware of a delightfully Nostalgic 16 minute black and white film made in 1952 titled ‘Rover makes Good’. Basically a kind of Famous Five/ Lassie adventure which takes place on Kit Hill. Features Luckett Station and a local farm. The film made by the late John Dooley 1921 – 2005, of Albaston, a prolific documentary and travel film maker, is available at the Heritage Centre to view. More about him and his career in a later Newsletter.

As usual we are open every Friday 10am – 4pm and the first Saturday of the month. Contact Kay Greenstock 01579 383209 and Chris Cansfield 01752 851403 / Museum 01579-389506.

The photo of Jean Easterbrook nee Abell, who paid us a visit to point herself out in one of the Carnival pictures in which she was an Attendant. She won’t mind me saying that the photo was from 1949/1950. She was absolutely thrilled that we had got this photo showing her in her Carnival dress. It brought back many fond memories.

FREE First Aid training In conjunction with funding from the Town Council and Callington Lions, first aid equipment has been purchased for the Community and FREE first aid training can now be offered to anyone in the Parish.

Page 8 Callington U3A WALKING IN CORNWALL

Sue Kittow came to speak at our July meeting. Sue lives in Falmouth and writes books on Cornish Walks. She has always loved walking but now enjoys the company of Mollie Dog her Jack Russell who provides a means of chatting to other people and their dogs. She is an excellent photographer and showed us lots of her pictures, including a beautiful geographic sand sculpture she came across at Gwithian – made by an artist with a rake.

Sue used to write up her walks for the magazine Cornwall Today but thought about producing a book. So she re- visited and re-wrote 20 for her first effort, then set about trying to find a publisher. She found one in Wales and has kept going – both in the walking and writing sense. She was inspired by a friend to take a more themed approach and has written a book of walks connected to Writers in Cornwall and their favourite places. Following that came the television series of Poldark and Sue realised that someone else would write about the places used in the filming if she didn’t do it first. So she began, by her own admission, a little late in the day and working through the winter. The weather took its toll on her photography and she was faced with a bit of a scamper towards the publisher’s deadline trying to get pictures which were not indistinguishably grey and misty. She said she spent the Easter weekend driving around madly taking duplicate photographs because the sun had come out!

Sue expanded on her Poldark Walks and showed photographs of places used for filming accompanied by interesting facts. Charlestown stood in for and many fishing scenes. The shipwreck scenes were set in Gunwalloe Cove. The two shipwrecks mentioned in Winston Graham’s books actually took place but on Perranporth beach. Dr Ennis and Caroline’s wedding took place in the tiny church of , near Lerryn.

She is going to take on Daphne du Maurier next and I’m sure it will be as interesting as her work so far. Sue’s books are full of beautiful photographs and each walk has all the details of length – both in time and distance – terrain, how to get there, local facilities and a map. These are not walks with a list of points A to B and stiles and streams in between, however. They are written from her personal experience, mentioning who she went with or met on the way, what mischief Molly got up to and what discoveries were made by making a detour. From a swift perusal of her Cornish Writers book, I found it to be charming and to stand alone as a good read. As we sit in the indistinguishably grey and misty winters - which dogged her Poldark efforts – it reminds us of what is hidden in the cloak of Cornish cloud. The books are available via the usual places, Waterstones and Amazon for example.

Launceston Road Recreation Ground Sixth formers from Callington Community College have been out in force at Launceston Road Recreation Ground. As part of a project to get more young people helping out and contributing to the Community, they have prepared the raised flower bed in the Recreation Ground and planted some bedding plants supplied by the Town Council. By the time you read this, the flower bed should be planted up and looking very colourful. Photos will be in the next edition. Our thanks to the students and staff at the Community College for their hard work.

Fore Street The Rotary Club have very kindly donated £250 towards replenishing the flower planters in Fore Street. Town Council staff have planted an array of colourful bedding plants to brighten up the street. We think you will agree, they do look stunning!
