“Horses”—Patti Smith (1975) Added to the National Registry: 2009 Essay by Kimbrew McLeod (guest post)* Original album Original label John Cale “Jesus died for somebody’s sins / but not mine,” Patti Smith growled during the opening lines of “Horses,” the first album to emerge from New York City’s punk scene. Released at the end of 1975, it can best be understood by surveying the panorama of influences that shaped its creation: first and foremost, the overlapping underground arts scenes in downtown New York City during the 1960s and 1970s. While “Horses” seemed to emerge fully formed from the mind of a brilliant lyricist and musician, it was also very much the product of an environment that enabled Smith to find her voice. Growing up in a dreamworld filled with poetry and rock ’n’ roll, Smith first fell for Little Richard while living in New Jersey, which introduced her to the idea of androgyny. At age 16, she came across a copy of “Illuminations” by 19th-century French poet Arthur Rimbaud, which expanded her aesthetic horizons. By spring 1967, she graduated from high school and was doing temp work at a textbook factory in Philadelphia, which inspired her early poem-turned-song “Piss Factory,” about having her face shoved into a toilet bowl by bullying coworkers. Smith plotted her escape to New York City, where she landed a much more rewarding job at Brentano’s bookshop and also met Robert Mapplethorpe, who eventually photographed the iconic “Horses” album cover. She and Mapplethorpe became lovers and moved into the Chelsea Hotel, where Smith cultivated social connections that led her to become a performer in underground theater productions around town. -

After her films with Warhol, Darling continued acting in film and theater, and she was in plays written by Curtis. She died from lymphoma in Olivo, known as Ondinewas an actor who met Warhol at an orgy. After seeing non-participant Warhol in the back of the room, Ondine requested that he be thrown out. When Warhol and Ondine met again, Warhol claimed Factory: Andy Warhol had never been thrown out of a party. She first met Warhol in at a filming of Flesh in The Factory, and it is through her that she met Factory: Andy Warhol Curtis, who also cast Factory: Andy Warhol in a number of roles. -

We have made the pairing of The Owl and The Pussycat in honor of Edward Lear’s poem and with the thought that it is just the kind of association Warhol would have made. In 1978 Martha Graham created a dance entitled The Owl and the Pussycat using the words from Lear’s famous poem. Rudolph Nureyev danced and Liza Minnelli was the narrator. The Owl and the Pussycat played at Covent Garden and in New York City. ( Diaries, p. 229-230) Andy was present at the Covent Garden opening on July 23, 1979. ( Diaries, p. 230) Both The Owl and The Pussycat share the same white background as well as interesting shadows in the photographs. Not exactly dancing “by the light of the moon,” as Lear wrote, but use your imagination! By TIM MURPHY Published: October 31, 2013 In 1967, the same year that the playwright Tennessee Williams found himself in the depths of substance abuse, depression and critical failure, a short, busty, outspoken 17- year-old named Susana Ventura completed her tenure in reform school and ran away from working-class New Britain, Conn. She moved to downtown Manhattan, was sheltered by drag queens and fell under the tutelage of gay artists including Andy Warhol; the filmmaker and performance artist Jack Smith; and John Vaccaro, founder of the avant-garde Play-House of the Ridiculous theater group. Williams endured several more years of personal and professional anguish before he died at 71 in 1983. Ms. Ventura, taking a note from her drag mentors, quickly renamed herself Penny Arcade and by the 1990s had become a prominent performance artist downtown, presenting shows that, souped up by a troupe of burlesque dancers, mixed her vivid personal biography with passionate and sarcastic monologues about the AIDS epidemic, the women’s and gay rights movements, and, above all else, her own right to flaunt her body and her mind. Williams and Penny Arcade, now 63, never met, but she says they are kindred spirits, which makes her excited to deliver the coarse poetry of his late work onstage. -
