One Hundred Eleventh Annual Spring Commencement SATURDAY, MAY 5 2007 BEASLEY PERFORMING ARTS COLISEUM WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY PULLMAN, WASHINGTON Commencement Mission Statement Commencement at Washington State University represents the culmination of a student's academic achievement. It is a time for celebration and reflection for students, families, faculty, and staff. It brings together the campus community to share the joy of the accomplished goals of our students. The commencement ceremony at Washington State University serves a dual purpose: to mark a point of achievement, thus completing a chapter in the lives of students and those who support them, and to encourage continued pursuit of learning, personal fulfillment, and engagement with their local and worldwide communities. rt:Jn9v913 b91bnuH 9nQ :fn9m9Jn9mmo) Qni,q2 lsunnA '\00~ c. BEST WISHES FROM THE PRESIDENT ne of the satisfactions I have as president of Washington 0 State University is taking part in Commencement. Sharing in the joy of students reaching long-sought academic goals is a pleasure unlike any other, and I count participation in Commencement ceremonies as high points of each academic year. When I view students, all wearing black caps and flowing gowns on the coliseum floor, you all look remarkably alike. But I recognize that each of you is unique, with special talents and abilities as you reach this important milestone in life. I am grateful for the University faculty's commitment to our students. They and you are the reason WSU is "World Class. Face to Face." As the years go by, I know you will reflect upon what you have learned at Washington State, a university of unequalled quality and commitment. It is a privilege and honor to preside at your Commencement. I look forward to shaking your hand and wishing you well after you receive your diploma cover. President V. Lane Rawlins Washington State University The President's Medallion of Washington State University During commencement ceremonies and other special occasions, the president of Washington State University wears the President's Medallion. The round medallion features the WSU shield with Cougar head and links engraved with the names and dates of service for each past WSU president, starting with George Lilley, who served from 1891 to 1892, and ending with Samuel H. Smith, who served from 1985 to 2000. Blank links allow engraving of names and service years for future presidents. The medallion was created at the request of V. Lane Rawlins, who became president of WSU on June 8, 2000. He wore it for the first time during his inauguration on March 28, 2001. Spring 2001 was the first commencement that Rawlins wore the medallion. 4 2007 SPRING COMMENCEMENT GREETINGS FROM THE ASWSU AND GPSA PRESIDENTS Greetings Graduates, On behalf of the WSU student body, congratulations! The pride and sense of accomplishment you feel is hard earned and well-deserved. Today is your day. Take a deep breath and relax because life is beckoning. Do not think of this commencement ceremony merely as the end of an amazing adventure, but rather as a giant leap forward in the saga of your life. Over your years here you have been given the tools to accomplish anything. A degree from Washington State University means something more than any other degree. One of those special characteristics of a Cougar grad is the expectation to achieve some thing great.
