PLAYING THE BASS BASS THE PLAYING WITH THREE LEFT HANDS WILL CARRUTHERS ‘ Will Carruthers’ Playing The Bass With Three Left Hands is at the least the funniest rock memoir since Andrew Matheson’s Sick on You. Carruthers is a wonderfully droll narrator and the book is effectively a series of well-wrought comic set pieces’ Uncut, 9/10 Cover Playing the Bass.indd 1 25-8-2016 13:16:35 Playing the Bass with Th ree Left Hands I can confi rm that should you ever fi nd yourself on stage play- ing the bass guitar with tree left hands, it is usually he one in the middle that is the real one. Th e other two are probably phantoms. Playing the Bass with Th ree Left Hands tells the story of one of the most infl uential, revered and ultimately demented British bands of the 1980s, Spacemen 3. In classic rock n roll style they split up on the brink of their major breakthrough. As the decade turned sour and acid house hit the news, Rug- by’s fi nest imploded spectacularly, with Jason Pierce (aka Jason Spaceman) and Pete Kember (aka Sonic Boom) going their se- parate ways. Here, Will Carruthers tells the whole sorry story and the segue into Spirtualized in one of the funniest and most memorable memoirs committed to the page. Press Release Art & Language Letters to The Jackson Pollock Bar in the Style of The Red Krayola Featuring Matthew Jesse Jackson John Coxon and J. Spaceman Thursday, October 24, 2019 504 West 24th Street, New York Doors: 6pm Performances: 6.30 – 8.30pm RSVP required: [email protected] Lisson Gallery New York is pleased to present a night of performance, discussion and music inspired by the pioneering work of Art & Language and their 40-year collaboration with The Red Krayola, a punk band founded in Houston, Texas, by Mayo Thompson and Frederick Barthelme in 1966. The evening will also feature a discussion with Art & Language, hosted by art historian Matthew Jesse Jackson, as well as a newly commissioned homage to some of The Red Krayola’s earliest live shows, composed by musicians J. Spaceman (of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized) and John Coxon (from Spring Heel Jack and the Treader label). After the conceptual art group known as Art & Language was formed in 1968 at Coventry College of Art in the UK, it quickly spread to New York where it centered on two important journals, Art-Language (1969-85) and then later The Fox (1975-76), by which time some 20 artists were connected in various ways with the name. It was around this time that an album entitled Corrected Slogans came out, marking the first collaboration between Art & Language in the UK and The Red Krayola, in which snippets and slogans from conceptual art theory and philosophical tracts were sung or chanted over music composed in response by Thompson’s band.

The mini-album Ecstasy (? 1987 - nov 1987) explored the ambiguity that would make their mature sound so haunting and devastating: ecstasy and terror were two faces of the same moon, and that moon shone day and night. Daydreaming and nightmare became the same state of mind as guitars enveloped naive melodies and drums smashed vocal harmonies. Isn't Anything (? 1988 - nov 1988) went one step further than Jesus And Mary Chain, in that it renounced punk's violence and harked back to the most dilated forms of acid-rock. Kevin Shields' "shoegazing" guitar fulfilled Jerry Garcia's and Jimi Hendrix' galactic bliss, and helped the sweet litanies grind their way into a transcendental trance. Electronic keyboards joined guitar noise on Loveless (? jan 1989/? 1991 - nov 1991), the ultimate exploration of textures in rock music. Its stunning chaos can be viewed both as an enraptured "om" to the universe or as a deranged scream in a madman's cell or as a terrified paralysis in the face of a supernatural force.

  • Musician Jason Pierce on Taking Your Time
November 30, 2018 - As told to Gary Canino, 1972 words. Tags: Music, Process, Inspiration, Time management, Focus. On taking your time Musician Jason Pierce (of Spiritualized) on songwriting, what it means to chase after your own creative mistakes, and the responsibility of always doing your best. In the press for your new record you’ve mentioned Kris Kristofferson and other classic singer-songwriters as an influence. What’s amazing about their songs is they avoid the obvious hooks, and there’s a narrative that goes through them. So it’s like a sing-along, where you don’t actually sing along to those songs. When I saw Kristofferson live recently, he had this musical, ghostly sound behind his voice and it was just absolute magic. I was completely humbled by his songwriting. These artists pack these songs up and send them out, and I’ll never forget them. I forget that people buy tickets to see our shows until I see them, then I’m astounded that people actually like what we do and we don’t have to prove ourselves every time, but we always do anyway, if that makes sense. It always feels like a challenge, like we’ve gotta raise the bar. Did you always want to have big arrangements in your music before you had the means to have so many people on stage? We still don’t have the means to do it. We still lose money, but playing stripped down is great, too. As soon as you get rid of the massive band, there’s more room for the guitars all of a sudden.

Psychedelic music was the single greatest invention of the 1960s and remained the dominant genre in the 1990s. The 1960s coined a number of psychedelic styles, and they were still the basic psychedelic styles of the 1990s: the psychedelic pop of the Doors, the psychedelic freak-out of the Red Crayola, the psychedelic trance of the Velvet Underground, and the acid jam of the Grateful Dead. Among the innovations introduced during the 1980s, dream-pop and shoegazing were still popular in the 1990s. Far from merely plagiarizing the classics, the most significant bands of the decade contributed to re-define the art of the sonic trip. Boston's Galaxie 500 (12), comprised of guitarist Dean Wareham, bassist Naomi Yang and drummer Damon Krukowski, went against the trend when they created an anti-theatrical style devoted to urban alienation. Today (? 1988 - ? 1988) was a moonlit tide of languid litanies and whispered singalongs. It was expressionism turned upside down: angst and terror, but in the form of a bloodless stupor, not a loud scream.
