For us of the minority, the opportunity to see geese is more important that television.” Aldo Leopold 2 Abstract The Mogale’s Gate Biodiversity Centre is a 3 060 ha reserve located within the Gauteng province. The area comprises grassland with woodland patches in valleys and lower-lying areas. To develop a scientifically based management plan a detailed vegetation study was undertaken to identify and describe the different ecosystems present. From a TWINSPAN classification twelve plant communities, which can be grouped into nine major communities, were identified. A classification and description of the plant communities, as well as, a management plan are presented. The area comprises 80% grassland and 20% woodland with 109 different plant families. The centre has a grazing capacity of 5.7 ha/LSU with a moderate to good veld condition. From the results of this study it is clear that the area makes a significant contribution towards carbon storage with a total of 0.520 tC/ha/yr stored in all the plant communities.     South Africa Birding & Wildlife | Trip Report Sept. 15 – Oct. 1, 2018 | Written by Participant Karen Worcester Photos by Greg Smith With Guides Nick Fordyce, Dalton Gibbs, and Greg Smith, and participants Karen, Dawn, Ralph, Sheri, Robert, Corinne, Andrea, Rensje, Biny, June, Judith, and Wendy Monday, September 17 Arrivals Today was arrival day, with everyone making their way to the Greenwood Guesthouse, which would be our lodging for the next three nights. One of the commonly seen menu items in this part of the world is Butter Curried Chicken, which was served for dinner. Here we met Nick and Dalton, who along with Greg, would be our guides for the next two weeks. All three were energetic, knowledgeable, and charming. Dalton, who managed a reserve system in the Cape areas as his day job, is an encyclopedia for the natural history of this area. He was well versed in botany, could provide geological, geographical, political, and social context with ease, and had a sense of humor as well. He gave an overview of our trip and the extraordinary South African biome we would be exploring. Nick was lively, funny, and kind, and they made a great team. At least 20% of Africa’s plant diversity is in the Cape Town area. There are 319 threatened species and 13 which are already extinct. As small as it is, it is considered the sixth floral kingdom of the world, with 1000 plant species per square kilometer. For example, there are 700 species of Erica (heather) here, while Scotland has only three. Birds are equally diverse, with 950 species and 144 endemics! In this area, the warm waters of the Indian Ocean meet the cold water of the Atlantic, and the climate is “Mediterranean.” In addition, there is great topographic diversity, which causes diversification through isolation.

    PLOVERS By Glen Holland & Dick Schroeder Introduction: The plovers belong to the order Ciconiiformes, the family Charadriidae, and the subfamily Charadriinae, which encompasses 66 species in 11 genera, including many species commonly known as lapwings and dotterels. Plovers are generally found in pairs while breeding, but may occur in flocks of up to 200 birds outside the breeding season. They inhabit open country ranging from wetlands, seashores, and salt pans to grassland, old pastures and sports fields. They avoid tall vegetation. They rarely wade to forage, but feed mainly on insects and their larvae found in grass. Some vegetable matter is eaten as well. Pairs are highly vocal and territorial, and are well known for their brave aerial attacks on anything which threatens their nest. Plovers keep in regular contact through their calls, which include alarm calls to warn others of approaching danger. Management: My recommendations for managing plovers in captivity is based on experience with the crowned lapwing Vanellus coronatus and the blacksmith plover V. melanopterus of Africa and the endangered shore plover Charadrius novaeseelandiae of New Zealand. In common with many other plovers, the crowned is a bird of purely terrestrial habitats; the blacksmith is usually associated with fresh water and estuarine habitats; and the shore plover is found entirely on rocky and sandy beaches. These habitat variations must be catered to in aviculture. If an appropriate habitat for the particular species kept is not provided, the chances of success are drastically reduced. Plovers adapt very well to captivity, making the common species ideal for public displays. The aviary landscape for terrestrial species should correspond to either Habitat B or Habitat E, with plenty of open sandy areas combined with mowed lawns.

The scenery from the air was spectacular, particularly on our approach to the park’s airstrip. Our tour was deliberately timed to coincide with the dry season, a time when many of the trees have dropped their leaves, heightening visibility and leaving the landscapes starkly beautiful. This is also a time when the Great Ruaha River and its many smaller tributaries dwindle to shallow, often intermittent “sand rivers,” which, nonetheless, provide natural game corridors and concentration points for birds during a time in which water is at a premium. Zimmer) After touching down at the airstrip, we disembarked to find our trusty drivers, Geitan Ndunguru and Roger Mwengi, each of them longtime friends from our Northern Tanzania tours, waiting for us with their safari vehicles ready for action. The first order of business was to head to the lodge for lunch, but a large, mixed-species coven of Victor Emanuel Nature Tours 2 Southern Tanzania, 2018 vultures could not be ignored, particularly once we discovered the reason for the assemblage—a dead Hippo, no doubt taken down the previous night as it attempted to cross from one river to another, and, the sated Lion that had been gorging itself ever since.

    Ethiopia 12 November – 5 December 2015 www.avg-w.com [email protected] 1 Introduction Ethiopia is a country with a great variety of habitats and hence a huge diversity of bird species. Few other countries offer such unique combination of highlands, tropical forest, savanna landscapes and dry deserts. Over 800 species have been recorded in Ethiopia and 18 of these are endemic to the country and several others are near-endemic and shared only with Eritrea or Somali. All this has made Ethiopia a popular birdwatching destination. This trip report presents an overview of a three week birding trip made in November 2015. It presents the itinerary, an overview of the visited places, the birds and mammals observed as well as some practical information. We recorded an incredible amount of 565 bird species, most of which were seen very well by all participants and many where photographed as well. Next to that 49 different mammal species and numerous dragonflies and butterflies were recorded.
