Bernstein (New York Law School) Published on H-Law (October, 1999) Scholarship and Engagement: Henry Steele Commager as Historian and Public Intellectual[1] In December of 1998, midway through the House Judiciary Committee's hearings on the impeachment of President Clinton, the Committee called as witnesses a panel of historians and legal scholars who sought to cast light on the history and purposes of the impeachment process. Members of the H-LAW community would have recognized such names as Bruce Ackerman of Yale Law School, Jack N. Rakove of Stanford, and Sean Wilentz of Princeton. The odd thing about this panel, and about the other efforts of historians and other scholars to take part in the public controversy about impeachment, was that they either seemed or were treated as being out of place. Indeed, in his new book on the impeachment controversy, Judge Richard A. Posner argues that one lesson of the Clinton impeachment is just how unsuited historians are to offer guidance on matters of public policy.[2] Twenty-five years before this puzzling episode, the nation was roiled by another crisis posing the risk of Presidential impeachment--the Watergate controversy that finally drove President Richard Nixon to resign his office. -

Interpreting the History of Evolutionary Biology through a Kuhnian Prism: Sense or Nonsense? Koen B. Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962) is largely identified with his analysis of the structure of scientific revo- lutions. Here, we contribute to a minority tradition in the Kuhn literature by interpreting the history of evolutionary biology through the prism of the entire historical developmental model of sciences that he elaborates in The Structure. This research not only reveals a certain match between this model and the history of evolutionary biology but, more importantly, also sheds new light on several episodes in that history, and particularly on the publication of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species (1859), the construction of the modern evolutionary synthesis, the chronic discontent with it, and the latest expression of that discon- tent, called the extended evolutionary synthesis. The Theory Prize Committee, the Shils-Coleman Prize Committee, SECRETARY-TREASURER the Nominations Committee, and the Membership Committee have been active; the Peter Kivisto newsletter editor has kept us informed; the session organizers have assembled an impressive array of speakers and topics. And thus, we can look forward to our COUNCIL meeting in August as a time for intellectual consolidation and intellectual progress. SOCIOLOGY 316 An Introduction to Sociological Theory Fall 2002 Instructor: Gary Hamilton RETHINKING DEMOCRACY: THE ORIGINS OF AMERICAN SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY Purpose: There are a number of ways to introduce sociological theory to undergraduates. The way I have chosen to teach this course is to place sociological theory in the historical and social context of its creation. In so doing, I want to stress the complex relationship between the theorist and his or her intellectual environment, a relationship that has direct and indirect bearings on the theories themselves. The historical and social setting that I have selected for this course is the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century, roughly from 1880-1920. This is the time when, and the place that, sociology became an established social science discipline. I should note that many textbooks in sociological theory depict the “forefathers” of sociology as being the European triumvirate: Marx, Durkheim, and Weber. Yet if we examine the history of sociology carefully, we will see that this conventional depiction is not only poor history, but also poor sociology. Even though Americans took the idea and the term of “sociology” from Europeans, sociology, as a discipline of academic study, began in the United States. It is this formative period of sociology that we will examine in this course. I believe you will find that there is much to learn about our lives and our social thinking today from this examination of an earlier time. Required Readings: There are two required readings: 1. Tracing the efforts of natural philosophers and political theorists, this dissertation explores competing frameworks at the intersection between the natural and human sciences – Social Darwinism at one pole and Socialist Darwinism at the other, the latter best articulated by Peter Alexeyevich Kropotkin’s Darwinian theory of mutual aid. These frameworks were conceptualized within different scientific cultures during a contentious period both in the life sciences as well as the sociopolitical environments of Russia, Europe, and England. This cross- pollination of scientific and sociopolitical discourse contributed to competing frameworks of knowledge construction in both the natural and human sciences. -

I found some criteria for early- warning signs of antisemitic, bigoted and genocidal activities. I included a summary of neo-Nazi and white supremacy groups in modern American and then moved to a more specific focus on contemporary and prominent groups like Atomwaffen Division, the Proud Boys, the Vinlanders Social Club, the Base, Rise Against Movement, the Hammerskins, and other prominent antisemitic and hate-driven groups. Trends of hate-speech, acts of vandalism and acts of violence within the past fifty years were examined. Also, how law enforcement and the legal system has responded to these activities has been included as well. The different methods these groups use for indoctrination of younger generations has been an important aspect of my research: the consistent use of hate-rock and how hate-groups have co-opted punk and hardcore music to further their ideology. Live-music concerts and festivals surrounding these types of bands and how hate-groups have used music as a means to fund their more violent activities have been crucial components of my research as well. The use of other forms of music and the reactions of non-hate-based artists are also included. The use of the internet, social media and other digital means has also be a primary point of discussion.
